by Sean King The Westminster Titans were powered by five home runs as they swept the Lady Bearcats in a President’s Athletic Conference doubleheader, 6-1 and 9-3. Jennifer Emery had the hot stick for Westminster going 5-5 on the day with four home runs, eight RBIs, and two walks.
Mollie Stock (3-6) started game one for the Lady Bearcats and suffered the loss. The senior threw six innings allowing five runs, only two of which were earned, while scattering nine hits.
The game remained scoreless through the first two innings. In the top of the third, Stock retired the first batter she faced before allowing a single to shortstop AJ Beltz who would later be thrown out attempting to steal second by catcher Angela Doyle. Amy Cornicelli then reached on an error and Emery stepped to the plate and unloaded on the delivery from Stock driving her first homerun of the day deep over the centerfield fence.
The Lady Bearcats would get one run back in the bottom of the fourth when Maura Wahl lead off by drawing a walk off of Westminster pitcher Amber Crompton. Rachel Komarinski came up next and reached on an infield single before both runners were sacrificed ahead 60 feet by Doyle. Wahl would score on a sacrifice fly by Stock, cutting the Titan lead to 2-1. It would be the only time the Lady Bearcats would be able to get to Crompton.
Emery added home runs in the fifth and seventh innings finishing game one 4-4 with three home runs and five RBIs.
Senior Ashley Whipkey (6-2) got the nod in the circle for game two. She allowed nine runs, six earned, while allowing eight hits and striking out five.
Westminster was able to get to Whipkey early. After striking out the first batter she faced, shortstop Beltz reached on an error and Cornicelli singled up the middle, bringing up Emery who was doing the pitching in game two. Her homerun to right field put Westminster up 3-0 and her battery mate, Sarah Woodward would follow it up with a shot of her own to left center and quickly Westminster was up 4-0, a lead they would never relinquish.
Saint Vincent got on the board in the fourth when Komarinski reached on an error, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Whipkey, went to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Doyle.
In the sixth, Leanna Seminsky led off with a single and scored when Wahl doubled to right. Wahl would move to third on Komarinski’s groundout and eventually scored on Whipkey’s groundout to first.
For the day, Komarinski led the Lady Bearcats at the plate going 3-6. Jostalyn Klosky was the lone other Bearcat with more than one hit, tallying two. Seminsky, Wahl, Doyle, and Shannon Ballantyne each added one hit apiece.
The Lady Bearcats return to action on Saturday hosting Grove City on Senior Day at Bearcat Field. First pitch is slated for 2:00pm with Senior Day festivities occurring before the games.
