The Formative Years
 
  • The Illinois Education Club is organized through the efforts of William Chandler Bagley, Truman Lee Kelley, and Thomas Edgar Musselman.
  • William Chandler Bagley stated and refined basic concepts that provided the foundation for the Society's ideals.
  • Since its founding, Kappa Delta Pi has been coeducational.
 
1911-1923   Founding & Early Development
1911
  • Alpha Chapter at the University of Ilinois is installed on March 8.
1912
  • Beta Chapter is installed at the University of Colorado.
  • Phi Delta Kappa (PDK) rejected a petition from Kappa Delta Pi to merge the two organizations. The reason given by PDK: "There will never be an opportunity to secure the admission of women. We believe that a real honor fraternity in education must . . . be confined to men. Women do not enter the work to make a profession of it, and they ought not." Because KDP has always believed that both genders have a rightful place in all levels of the profession, the two organizations have remained separate.
1915
  • First Convocation is held in Boulder, Colorado, in July.
1917
  • During the second Convocation, in July in Boulder, a quarterly bulletin, the Record, is authorized.
1920
  • Bagley joins the faculty of Teachers College, Columbia University, and installs the Kappa Chapter.
 
1924-1949   Establishment as a National Organization
1924
  • Thomas McCracken is elected National President and continues in that office for 24 years.
  • The Laureate Chapter is established with John Dewey as its first member.

  • The National Office is established in Tiffin, Ohio, with E.I.F. Williams as Secretary-Treasurer.
1928
  • The KDP Lecture Series in established.
1936
  • The first issue of The Educational Forum is published with Alfred L. hall-Quest as Editor.
1942
  • E.I.F. Williams is named Editor of all Kappa Delta Pi publications.
  • The Executive Council is established to include the offices of President, two Vice Presidents, Advisory Counselor, and Laureate Counselor.
 
1950-1969   Growth & Expansion
1950
  • Society grows to 167 chapters, including four alumni chapters.
  • Formal planning and funding begins for the erection of a National Headquarters building.

  • The Student representative position is added to the Executive Council and is granted full voting rights.
1962
  • The office of Alumni Counselor is established on the Executive Council.
  • E.I.F. Williams retires as Exectuve Secretary and is succeeded by J. Rishard McElheny. The National Headquarters building in West Lafayette, Indiana, is completed and dedicated in October.

  • Harry Broudy succeeds E.I.F. williams as Editor of The Educational Forum.
  • The Kappa Delta Pi Record replaces the supplement to The Educational Forum.

  • The office of President-Elect is established on the Executive Council.

  • The position of Assisstant tot he Executive Secretary is established.

  • Student forum participants at Convocation in Boston.
1973
  • Jack R. Frymier succeeds harry Broudy as Editor of The Educational Forum.
1974
  • Nathan Kravetz is appointed Editor of the Kappa Delta Pi Record.
1978
  • Richard McElheny retires as Executive Secretary, and J. Jay Hostetler is appointed to replace him.
  • Russell Call is appointed Editor of the Kappa Delta Pi Record.

  • The Kappa Delta Pi Educational Foundation is established in July with Richard L. Judd elected Chairman of the Board.
  • Ronald c. Green is appointed first Business Manager of the Society.
1981
  • First international chapter is installed at the University of Calgary on October 28.
1982
  • Gerald Ponder is appointed Editor of the Kappa Delta Pi Record.
  • The Scroll & Stylus newsletter is authorized with ronald C. Green as Editor.
1984
  • Kaoru Yamamoto is appointed Editor of The Educational Forum.
  • The first Convocation outside the United States is held in montreal, Canada, in April.
1987
  • KennthN. mele is appointed first Field Representative.
 
1990-1994 Refocusing and Growth
1990
  • Michael P. Wolfe is selected as the Society's first Executive Director.
1991
  • A strategic plannng process is initiated throughout the Society to build continuity between biennia.
  • Fifty Area Representatives are appointed to work with regional chapter areas.
  • The National State Teachers of the Year organization is approved as an Honorary Chapter.

  • Kappa Delta Pi and the Association of Teacher Educators create the National Student Teacher/Intern of the Year Award.
  • Kappa Delta Pi and the American Educational Research Association create the National Award for Promising young Researcher.
  • The New Teacher Institute debuts in Birmingham and Chicago.
  • Chapter chartering and reactivations set a record. The number os KDP chapters exceeds 500.
 
1995-1999 New Directions
1995
  • A Regional Field Director position is created.
    The Achieving Chapter Excellence (ACE) Award is given to 11 chapters (Gamma Theta Chapter shown on left).
  • All members vote on national officers.
    The Educational Forum and the New Teachers Advocate are honored by the American Society of Association Executives.
  • Star Teachers of Children in Poverty by martin Haberman is published.

1996
  • The Society receives the prestigious Summit Award from the American Society of Association of Executives for its Beginning Teacher Initiative.
  • The Kadelpian newsletter is created as an all-member mailing.
  • Kappa Delta Pi's Web site (KDP Online) is created.

Society President F. Morgan Simpson and Executive Director Michael P. Wolfe accept ASAE's Summit Award.
1997
  • Kappa Delta Pi and the Mortar Board collaborate on Reading is Fun Week projects.
  • Kadelpians participate in the first China-USA Conference on Education in Beijing, China.
  • The Society's Reserve Fund reaches $3,000,000.

1998
  • KDP's Headquarters is relocated to a new facility in Indianapolis. A Capital Campaign focusses on four initiatives: Conference Center, Laurete Library, Presidents' Conference Room, and Center for Excellence in Teaching.
  • Celebration of Teaching grants promoting teaching as a career are launched.
  • The Kappa Delta Pi Record receives the Distinguished Achievement Award from the Association of Educational Publishers, and the New Teacher Advocate receives national recognition by the American Society of Association Executives.
  • Leadership Forums are launched in 13 geographic areas.
1999
  • Life Cycle of the Career Teacher, with 18 Kadelpian authors, is published in collaboration with Corwin Press.
  • Membership and Chapter Services receive the prestigious Pyramid Award from the American Society of Association Executives for initatives in leadership development. The Chapter Resource Notebook receives a national award for outstanding chapter and leadership-training materials.

Kadelpians from the Pi Epsilon Chapter (University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point) celebrate their work at a Leadership Forum at KDP Headquarters.
  • Publication sales exceed $300,000.
    Quality Mentoring for Novice Teachers, a collaborative book project with the Association of Teacher Educators, is published.
  • Millennium counselor Awards are established and presented.
  • Income from KDP store sales reaches record levels through the use of targeted merchandising techniques and the introduction of new products.
  • Regional Chapter Resource Consultant positions are created to serve the needs of chapters more effectively.
2001
  • A society brand promise is created and adopted:
    "No other organization confirms my status as a scholar and leader and keeps me connected to the best and brightest ideas and people in the field of education."
  • I TEACH regional conferences are initiated.
  • New Teacher Advocate wins the Distinguished Achievement Award from the Association of Educational Publishers.
  • National Day of Service program is created.
2002
  • "Ask miss Ruth" Teacher hotline is launched.
  • Partnership with Teacher-Teachers.com, an online job search company, is formed.
  • New Teacher Advocate is a finalist in the Association of Educational Publishers' Distinguished Achievement Awards competition.
2003
  • The ABC's of Job Hunting for Teachers, is published in partnership with Teachers-Teachers.com
  • First community college chapter is chartered at Camden Community College, Blackwood, NJ.
  • Counselor Academies are launched.
  • Ready, Set, Teach! A Winning Design for Your First Year is published.
  • American Society of Association Executives awards KDP the Advance America Award of Excellence for its work with new teacher induction and three chapter service projects.
  • Novice Notes, a quarterly publication addressing topics of interest to preservice and novice teachers, is launched.
  • They Led by Teaching and Dear John Dewey are published.
2004
  • KDP, in conjunction with the National Academy of Education and the National Society for the Study of Education, begins hosting Town Hall Forums across the country to increase public awareness and understanding of the No Child Left Behind Act.
  • The Society begins offering at-large memberships for those educators who are unable to join an institutional, alumni, or school-based chapter.
  • The first school-based chapters are formed.
  • The Teacher Classroom Grant program is introduced. Fifty-seven teachers from around the country receive funds for innovative classroom projects.
  • KDP, John Goodlad, and the Institute for Educational Inquiry work together to promote the Agenda for Education in a Democracy.
  • The ABC's of Job-Hunting for Teachers is a finalist in the Educational Publishers' Distinguished Achievement Awards competition.
  • KDP's Web site is revamped. The site allows members to renew their membership, change contact information, join an online discussion, purchase Store items, and donate to the Educational Foundation online.
  • The Educational Forum is redesigned to reflect its renewed mandate of serving as a catalyst for stimulating and encouraging dialogue and for transforming the thinking about education.
  • Life Cycle of the Career Teacher in Practice, a companion booklet to the Life Cycle of the Career Teacher book, is published.
  • A monthly electronic communiqué welcoming new members to Kappa Delta Pi and informing them of benefits and services is introduced.
  • The I Teach conferences are redesigned to focus on preservice and beginning teachers' needs. This change results in increased attendance and the scheduling of additional conferences.
  • A new association management system for the Society is researched and purchased.
  • The Kadelpian, a newsletter to keep members informed about Society events and happenings, is delivered electronically.
2005
  • The Educational Foundation celebrates its 25th anniversary.
  • The ABC's of Classroom Management is published with the support of Teachers-Teachers.com
    KDP is admitted to the Trust of Insuring Educators and begins offering new insurance programs to members, including student teaching liability insurance.
  • KDP's Headquarters building is renovated.
  • KDP is named to the American Society of Association Executives' Advance America Honor Roll for its NCLB Town Hall Forums.
  • Experiencing Dewey: Insights for Today's Classroom is published.
  • Ideas to Go, a monthly electronic communication containing classroom tips from National State Teachers of the Year and experienced educators on a variety of subjects, in launched.
  • KDP installs 25 new collegiate chapters, surpassing its previous record for new chapter installations in an academic year.
  • Michael P. Wolfe announces his retirement after 15 years as Executive Director. The search for a new director begins.
  • A comprehensive membership survey is conducted.
