Back to Courses Grades K- 1 2:00-3:00pm SU 02 Lions and Tigers and Bears, oh my! This course will introduce students to all of their favorite animals at the zoo. Students will learn facts about the animals such as what they eat and where they are from in the world. As they learn about the various animals, students will be able to express themselves creatively by creating artwork of their own of each animal. The course will encourage students to learn about their favorite furry, feathered, and scaled creatures while being creative and having fun. COST: $20 ROOM: Placid 1B
Ms. Sarah Hritz is a sophomore at Saint Vincent College majoring in Elementary Instruction with a minor in Psychology. She has enjoyed her experiences with younger elementary children through the Key Club volunteer activities in high school, and she taught dance lessons to young girls at a local dance studio. She was a junior volunteer at the Indiana Regional Medical Center in Indiana County, PA. Ms. Hritz has the most fun being with her family and friends, and she enjoys anything involving dancing, music, or animals.
2:00-3:00pm SU 03 Seuss on the Loose! This course will teach students many different lessons through the use of Dr. Seuss books. At the beginning of each class, students will listen to a Dr. Seuss book and then be taught a lesson that connects back to the story from that day. Lessons will include things like counting, colors, and animals and will include the use of hands-on activities, work pages, and games that will encourage students to use their imagination. Miss Allison Petris is a sophomore at Saint Vincent College and is majoring in Elementary Instruction. She has been a counselor of Vacation Bible School at her church for the past eight years and served as an assistant Sunday school teacher for her senior project. She is a third degree black belt in karate and currently holds the position of sophomore class senator on the Student Government Association at the college. She enjoys drawing, watching hockey, babysitting, and working as a server at Eat ‘n Park.
2:00-3:00pm SU 04 It’s All About Drama Students will be introduced to the Stage Basics of production and participate in various related performance techniques, such as: improvisation, monologues, one act plays, and small group scenes. This will be done on an age-appropriate level with the excitement of actually performing at the end of the course. After choosing the drama for the final project, the culminating activity will be a production for parents and guests on the evening of November 17th at the Barnes & Noble Bookstore in Greensburg, PA. Mrs. Jeena Valentine is our new director this semester. She holds a B.S degree in Psychology from Saint Vincent College and an MS in Child Development from the University of Pittsburgh. In addition, she has extensive experience in dance, musical theater, and choreography. Mrs. Valentine has been a member of the Ligonier Valley Players for 15 years, and also served as Co-Director for the Children’s Theater. She is currently the Children’s Choir Director for the Valley Players Christmas production.
Ms. Ariel Byers, who will be assisting Mrs. Valentine, is a junior English major at Saint Vincent College. She works as a counselor at Outdoor Odyssey, a high-adventure youth mentoring camp. Ms. Byers is a member of many clubs around campus including Orientation Committee, The Company, and Academic Programming Board. In addition to her activities, she enjoys spending her time outside, caving, rafting, and rock climbing. She also serves as a mentor to at-risk youth in her community. Ms. Byers has worked with the STEP-UP Program for two semesters.
3:00-4:00pm SU 05 Dealing Fun into Math This course will introduce students to arithmetic in a completely new way. While learning math through games and songs, students will be intrigued to continue their education in this subject. From jump roping to playing cards students will learn to count throughout their daily encounters. COST: $20 ROOM: Placid 1B
Ms. Emily Ianachione is currently a sophomore as Saint Vincent College majoring in Elementary Instruction. She particularly enjoyed working with first grade students during her Field Experience I. She was also a member of various soccer leagues including the Saint Vincent’s Lady Bearcats until she took time off to give more focus to her studies. Ms. Ianachione also enjoys spending time with her friends and family.
3:00-4:00pm SU 06 Experimenting Science With Our Hands This course will introduce science to the students in a fun and interesting way. It will be a hands-on course that will make the students interested and personally involved in the lesson. They will be able to produce different projects such as making slime, play-doh, tornados in a bottle, and many others. The students will be able to have fun experimenting with these projects and with one another while leaning at the same time. Each project and experiment will go along with a lesson to learn basic science concepts. COST: $20 ROOM: Placid 1B
Miss Ilyssa Miller is a sophomore at Saint Vincent College majoring in Elementary Instruction. She has been a Sunday school teacher at her church for three years and has been working at a Daycare facility during the summers and holidays for three years. She also loves to help organize the Vacation Bible School at her church, has organized and coached a volleyball team for elementary age students for her senior high school project, and has even had the opportunity to travel to Guatemala this past summer to work with elementary aged students. She was an Honor Roll student in high school and a member of the National Honor Society and Student Council. She is now a member of Saint Vincent’s National Honors Society (Alpha Lambda Delta). She enjoys spending time with family and loves to scrapbook in her free time.
3:00-4:00pm SU 07 Be Safe and Stay in Shape! In this course, students will be able to engage in the importance of safety and keeping their bodies healthy. Students will concentrate on discovering the fundamentals of safety first as well as nutrition and fitness. The course will include various activities for students to be aware of safety and beneficial eating habits to live a healthy life! COST: $20 ROOM: Placid 1B Ms. Alicia Ramsier is a sophomore at Saint Vincent College majoring in Elementary Education. She had the pleasure of spending her summer working as a counselor at a summer camp for kids with special needs in Washington, Pa. She participates in many clubs on campus such as Education Club, Dance Team, and The Company. Besides participating in activities on campus, she enjoys spending time with her family and working as an Admissions Ambassador on campus.
4:00-5:00pm SU 08 Introduction to Spanish This course will introduce students to the modern language of Spanish through the popular television characters, Dora and Diego, to help make it more interesting to the students. Through various activities, the children will learn basic phrases, colors, numbers and objects in Spanish along with a brief introduction to the cultures of Spanish speaking countries. Miss Devin Lindsey Rigot is a sophomore at Saint Vincent College this fall. She is an Early Childhood/Elementary Education major with a minor in both Psychology and Spanish. She has a good deal of experience working with children including 3 years of teaching at a lab preschool, a year of doing co-op at a day care center and also spending this past summer as a nanny to 2 young special needs children. In her free time she likes to do service projects with campus ministry, especially when they involve working with sick or underprivileged children. On campus, Devin is cheerleader and also has a work-study position in the main office of admissions. She aspires one day to move to California and teach Kindergarten or elementary Spanish.
4:00-5:00pm SU 09 Creepy Crawlers In this course, students will examine the array of different insects that our world offers. Field experiences will occur where each student is available to go out in nature and observe insects in their natural environments as well as have the opportunity to collect some “bugs”. Beyond discovering insects, we will also discuss their habitats and importance to the earth. COST: $20 ROOM: Placid 1B
Mr. Kenneth Burt is a graduate student at St. Vincent College pursuing a Master’s degree in Special Education and a Social Studies certification. He is a 2008 graduate of Seton Hill University, having majored in History and Political Science. Mr. Burt also coaches instructional age football in White Oak.
4:00-5:00pm SU 10 Racing through Space will provide the students with exciting hands-on experiences of different elements of our Universe. This course will run through a model of an astronaut and spaceship. The order of the planets will also be introduced in a fun and thrilling way. Students will learn a unique way to memorize the order of the planets, and discuss specific temperatures, landmarks, and rocks and life on certain planets. During the last lesson, the students will be asked to draw an astronaut, favorite planet and will be asked to write or describe three facts about it. COST: $20 ROOM: Placid 1B
Ms. Emily Fenton is a sophomore at St. Vincent College majoring in Elementary Education. She has been a children’s liturgy teacher at St. John the Evangelist Church for two years and also babysits throughout the summers and during the school year. She is a member of the Saint Vincent Women’s basketball team and has enjoyed helping out at the Saint Vincent Women’s basketball camps for girls’ ages 8-17 the past two summers. She graduated from Greater Latrobe High school and was a member of the National Honor Society and lettered in Varsity Volleyball, Basketball, and Softball.
Back to Courses Grades 2-3 2:00-3:00pm SU 11 To Infinity and Beyond: In this class the students will get to explore the regions of space including the plants, constellations, other galaxies, and black holes. The students will get to create and name their own planet. The students will also get to create a model of our planets. COST: $20 ROOM: Alfred Hall 33
Mr. John Benzing is a sophomore at Saint Vincent College majoring in Elementary Instruction. In high school, he served on M.A.P.S (Maximizing Adolescent Potential and Skills) as an executive officer. In his free time he likes playing and coaching volleyball.
2:00-3:00pm SU 12 Puzzled Learning This course will explore different subjects through the use of puzzles. Each week a new subject area will be treated while the students complete word, math, picture, and logic puzzles. Through the use of puzzles, the students will be given the opportunity to think creatively and have fun while touching upon subjects such as the zoo, sports, space, holidays, seasons, careers, and more! Ms. Caitlin Prunty is a sophomore at Saint Vincent College majoring in Elementary Instruction with a minor in Psychology. In high school, she served as an officer for various organizations, including class vice president. She has enjoyed volunteering with community reading programs for children, babysitting, and teaching piano lessons.

3:00-4:00pm SU 14 Sensational Senses This course will introduce students to their five senses through a health lesson. Students will participate in hands-on activities involving each of the senses while learning basic facts about how the senses operate. Culminating activities include students using their senses to participate in a musical experience and a tasty treat. COST: $20 ROOM: Alfred Hall 36
Miss Lauren Spang is a sophomore at Saint Vincent College majoring in Elementary Instruction. Here at Saint Vincent, she belongs to the SVC Dance Team, The Company, and Orientation Committee. Lauren has danced for 11 years and has played the flute since she was 9 years old. During her summers, Lauren enjoys spending time with her friends and family as well as working as a cashier at a plant nursery in Belle Vernon. She has had numerous years of experience working with young children, especially through baby-sitting. 3:00-4:00pm SU 15 Fairytale Frenzy In this course, students will learn about the basic elements of a fairytale. They will also have the opportunity to explore seven classic fairytales and complete accompanying educational activities. Near the end of the program, students will be given the choice to either a) write their own version of an existing fairytale or b) create an original one. During the last class, these fairytales will be shared with the children’s families and friends in the form of a puppet show COST: $20 ROOM: Alfred Hall 37
Ms. Kelly Burkley is a sophomore at Saint Vincent College majoring in Elementary Instruction. She has much experience babysitting young children, and as part of a program in high school, she instructed preschool students. It was here that she discovered her passion for teaching. Outside of school, Ms. Burkley enjoys reading for pleasure and spending time with her family and friends. In addition, she holds a part-time job at a local grocery store. After obtaining her teaching certification, Ms. Burkley plans to earn a Masters Degree in Special Education.
3:00-4:00pm SU 16 Ready, Set…Play! Enjoy the classic playground games such as Four Square, tag, jump road, hopscotch, and many more! The students will be able to interact with their peers as well as having fun and exercising. They will also be able to come up with their own games and suggest games that they have played before. Ms. Emily Fedor is a junior at Saint Vincent College majoring in Mathematics with a minor in Education. She tutors 9th grade students in Algebra II in her spare time and has a Work-Study position at the Public Safety Office on campus. Ms. Fedor is also a student athlete, participating in lacrosse in the spring semester of the school year. When she isn't in class or at practice, she enjoys playing intramural sports such as basketball and volleyball, being with her family and friends, and reading.
4:00-5:00pm SU 17 Fun with the 10 Largest States This course will introduce students to e10 largest states in the country. They will learn about the history and geography of each state. They will also learn many fun facts about each state including its capital city, state bird, and state flower. The various class activities will help to increase their knowledge of the United States. Ms. Jordan Richardson is a sophomore at Saint Vincent College majoring in Elementary Instruction. She has enjoyed working with children ranging in age from 3 months to 10 years old as a nursery aide in high school. She was also a member of the Activities Staff and the National Honors Society in high school. Ms. Richardson also enjoys spending time with her mother and sisters.
4:00-5:00pm SU 18 “To eat or not to eat…” This class is meant to teach kids that everyday items such as vinegar and baking soda can make extraordinary and fun things that they may or may not be able to eat. Children will incorporate math skills, science, and geography by making volcanoes and using measuring spoons and measuring cups to measure the ingredients needed to make their science experiments. Slime, volcano’s, rock candy, and play-doh are just a few examples of what students will be creating in “to eat or not to eat.” COST: $20 ROOM: Alfred Hall 36
Ms. Jennifer Rager is a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh where she received her Bachelor’s of Science in Psychology. She enjoyed tutoring many students there and was also a dean’s list student. Ms. Rager is currently a continuing education student at St. Vincent College seeking her elementary education certification. She enjoys teaching children new and interesting facts in unusual ways. In her spare time she like to play with her Jack Russell Terrier and two cats as well as having fun with her friends and family.
4:00-5:00pm SU 19 Music Heard 'Round the World This course will introduce students to elements of different cultures around the world by listening to simple folk songs, folk tales, and rhymes. Students can use their knowledge of American nursery rhymes and children's songs and learn similar songs and stories that are popular in other countries. The class will frequently use music samples, children's stories and nursery rhymes, as well as group discussion. Ultimately, students will gain a basic understanding of what childhood might be like in other countries. COST: $20 ROOM: Alfred Hall 38 Ms. Sara Berger is a sophomore at Saint Vincent College majoring in Elementary Instruction with a minor in music. Throughout high school, she taught violin lessons to beginner and intermediate students in the Norwin Orchestra program, as well as volunteered at various music camps in the district. She was also the captain of her high school field hockey team her senior year and was a four year member of Norwin's Interact Club where she took part in numerous service projects during those four years. In addition to those activities Ms. Berger loves watching the Pittsburgh Penguins and drawing.
Back to Courses Grades 4-5 2:00-3:00pm SU 20 Symbols of the U.S. Government During this course, students will learn about the history and importance of the most famous symbols of the United States. This course will focus on symbols in Pennsylvania as well. The many classroom activities will inspire the students to become aware of meaningful moments of their culture and history. Mr. Dan Tomak is a graduate student at Saint Vincent College majoring in Special Education. Mr. Tomak is also working on his undergraduate degree to be certified in Social Studies Instruction. He has an undergraduate degree in political science from the Indiana University of Pennsylvania. He has been employed as a Therapeutic Staff Support for a nonprofit organization in different schools for three years. During this time period, he has worked with children with diagnoses such as autism, prader willi, bipolar disorder, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. In addition to his time spent at work and school, he enjoys exercising, playing basketball, watching sports, and reading.
2:00-3:00pm SU 21 Backpacking Through Europe Throughout this course, students will travel all around Europe. Students will learn about the history and geography of each country. They will also explore the many cultural aspects including holidays, language, and daily life in each country. Geography, writing, reading, and creativity skills will be reinforced through various activities. Students will also research and create a project for a chosen country in Europe. Miss Jennifer Spisak is a junior at Saint Vincent College majoring in Elementary Education with a minor in Psychology. She went to Hempfield Area High School where she was a member of the Latin Honor Society and given a USAA National Science Merit Award. Currently, she is a member of the Saint Vincent College Education Club. She will also be a Junior Girl Scout troop leader for the 2009/2010 school year. In her spare time, she enjoys reading and spending time with her family and friends.

3:00-4:00pm SU 23 Technological Taste Testers In this research and interactive-based class, we will investigate flavorful foods from around the world using various types of technological resources. The students will have the opportunity to dig deep into the many exciting library resources to learn about the foods they enjoy! At the close of the course, students will select and sample several foods. COST: $20 ROOM: Alfred Hall 35
Miss Karly Kunkle is a graduate student at Saint Vincent College majoring in Library Media Management. She works for the university as a graduate assistant in the education department. She earned her undergraduate degree from California University of Pennsylvania, with a degree in Education Services. Ms. Kunkle has many hours of experience teaching children through her undergraduate course work, at Norwin School District where she was a reading tutor, and at Brightside Academy where she was a school aged teacher. She also worked as an intern at Carnegie Children’s Library in Pittsburgh. Aside from working at Saint Vincent College, she works at Family Behavioral Resources in North Huntingdon as a therapeutic staff support (TSS) for autistic children. In her spare time, Ms. Kunkle enjoys reading, selling Silpada jewelry, and spending quality time with her boyfriend, family, and friends.
3:00-4:00pm SU 24 Sampling Ancient Greece Join our class as we explore adventurous, dramatic myths of brave heroes, monsters, gods and goddesses, mighty wars, great works of literature and creative extension activities! COST: $20 ROOM: Alfred Hall 34
Dr. Patricia Soforic is a continuing education student at Saint Vincent College, pursuing a teaching certificate in elementary education. Her love of teaching and learning was kindled while home schooling her own two children over the past several years. Dr. Soforic was an instructor at a home school cooperative where she taught history and science for two years and at the STEP-UP program where she taught human biology. For recreation, Dr. Soforic especially enjoys spending time with her family at Deep Creek Lake and attending musical theatre productions.
3:00-4:00pm SU 25 Let’s Explore! Forests of the World Through this course, students will explore three different types of forests found on our planet, and how diverse forests can be! Students will discover the wonders of South American Rain Forests, Ocean Kelp Forests, and Deciduous North American tree forests through plants, animals, and environmental conditions. Students will become more familiar with international geography as they learn about the types of places where these different forests can be found. Crafts and hands-on activities will add to the fun. Ms. Sheila O’Malley is a sophomore at Saint Vincent College, majoring in Elementary Instruction. Ms. O’Malley was herself a home schooled student all through her primary and secondary education, graduating from The Learning Community International of Annapolis, MD, in 2008. During high school, she babysat regularly and taught religious education and traditional Irish dance. She is a member of such campus organizations as Alpha Lambda Delta, the Saint Vincent College Singers, and the Orientation Committee. She also enjoys participating in Campus Ministry service projects and activities. In addition, she enjoys reading and spending time with her friends and family.
4:00-5:00pm SU 26 Kicking it Ninja Style This course will teach students some history of martial arts and an opportunity to learn many basic techniques and movements. At the end of the course, students will have a mock belt test to be able to showcase the skills they have learned throughout the course. There will be no contact to avoid potential injuries. The idea of the course is to teach the student martial arts as an exercise and an art form. COST: $20 ROOM: Alfred Hall 37
Mr. Joseph Gallagher is a sophomore at Saint Vincent College majoring in Elementary Instruction. He has enjoyed working with younger students by means of volunteering at Barber Elementary School in Phillipsburg, NJ; volunteering at Vacation Bible School at St. Jane’s Catholic Church in Easton, PA; and by babysitting his nieces. He was a two time retreat team leader in his local youth group. He was also the flute section leader in his high school marching band. In addition to his activities, Mr. Gallagher enjoys spending time with friends and family, playing sports, practicing martial arts, and working at Chestnut Lake Summer Camp.
4:00-5:00pm SU 27 Science with a Twist! Throughout this course, students will experience hands-on activities and develop a love of science. Each class will offer a different experiment and the scientific reasons behind the experiment. Along the way, students will discover how fossils form, why all liquids aren’t the same, what makes a lava lamp work, what our shadows tell us, and so much more. The students will conduct each experiment either alone or in a small group, learning a different scientific concept each week. COST: $20 ROOM: Alfred Hall 34
Ms. Lauren Nasser is a junior at Saint Vincent College majoring in Elementary Instruction. She has enjoyed teaching Sunday school for the past five years. She also taught the first through third grade Bible School class this past summer. In high school, she was a member of Teens Against Tobacco Use, which goes into elementary schools to teach younger students not to begin using drugs. In addition to these activities, Ms. Nasser frequently babysits, enjoys spending time with her family and friends, and enjoys working at the local Foodland in the summer.
4:00-5:00pm SU 28 Nifty National Parks This course will introduce the basics of America’s National Parks. Students will learn where these parks are located in the United States and the geography of the area. In addition, students will learn why National Parks are preserved or set aside for tourist purposes. Students will have a lot of fun through many physical demonstrations in which they will better understand the originality of these parks. Don’t miss out on this exciting class! Mr. Chad Succop is a sophomore at Saint Vincent College majoring in Elementary Instruction. He enjoys volunteering with many organizations and programs in his church such as teaching CCD and Vacation Bible School. At Thomas Jefferson High School, Mr. Succop was voted: Class President (2004-2008), National Honors Society Officer (2007-2008), Spanish Club President (2007 & 2008), and Spanish National Honors Society President (2008). He is currently in the process of getting involved with the Big Brothers and Big Sisters organization. He has worked at an ice cream shop, Circuit City and Best Buy.
Back to Courses 2:00-3:00pm SU 30 The Steel City/ History of Pittsburgh This course will cover the history of Pittsburgh from the early days of Fort Pitt to the present day. Topics will include famous people from the city as well as many of the different landmarks that make this city a great place. A look at the unique cultural diversity as well as the different neighborhoods of the area will be included. COST: $20 ROOM: Alfred Hall 31
Mr. Anthony Townsend is a graduate student in the field of Special Education and is also pursuing a teaching certificate in History/Social Studies. He has worked with students ranging from grades 3-8 in both regular education classrooms as well as special education classrooms. Mr. Townsend previously served in the U.S. Army for 12 years and has worked in the lending/banking industry for 5 years. Mr. Townsend enjoys all Pittsburgh sports as well as visiting the many different interesting places throughout the Pittsburgh area. He also enjoys spending time with his family and pets.
2:00-3:00pm SU 31 Enjoying Literature with a Literature Circle This course will utilize the literature circle concept of a student-centered collaborative reading strategy. Students will discuss, define, and explore unfamiliar words. They will predict text events and use evidence in text to verify the predictions. Their study will also include learning to ask relevant and focused questions to clarify understanding and learning to respond to questions and discussions with relevant and focused comments. Ms. Elizabeth Breegle is a graduate student at Saint Vincent College majoring in Education Media and Technology Library Science, and Educational Media and Technology Instructional Technology Specialist. Ms. Breegle’s undergraduate coursework is in Psychology from the University of Pittsburgh with an emphasis in Educational Psychology. She has home educated her three children for eleven years using an eclectic approach. She assists with organizing events for the PA Cyber School Greensburg Region. She is a member of the International Reading Association, a student member of the Pennsylvania State Education Association, and a life-time member of Sigma Alpha Pi - the National Society of Leadership and Success. Her hobbies include reading, walking, traveling, and spending time with family.
2:00-3:00pm SU 32 Train Like a Steeler: This course will introduce to students the history of the Pittsburgh Steelers. In addition, students will go through some of the same drills that the Steelers go through themselves. This hands-on course will help kids understand how the Steelers became great, and how to become a great “Steeler” themselves. COST: $20 ROOM: Alfred Hall 42
Mr. Jim Muraco is a sophomore at Saint Vincent College majoring in Elementary Instruction. He enjoyed working with preschoolers as a class in high school. He was a DARE role model, and participated in many community service programs in high school such as helping to clean the local library, and a food drive at the library. In addition, Mr. Muraco enjoys spending time with his family and landscaping as his summer job.
3:00-4:00pm SU 33 Backyard Living: A Tour of Pennsylvania’s Wildlife This course will introduce students to the wildlife found in Pennsylvania. Students will learn about common animal and plant species. As they learn about Pennsylvania’s inhabitants, students will discover species that are naturally native rather than introduced. Class activities will encourage students to gain an appreciation for Pennsylvania’s wildlife. COST: $20 ROOM: Alfred Hall 32
Ms. Jennifer Miller is a continuing education student at Saint Vincent College, earning a teacher certification in secondary biology. She is in the Army Reserves and takes pride in her job serving the country. Ms. Miller tutored middle school students for a semester and coached high school track and field last season. In addition to her activities, she takes pleasure in drawing and being around her pet dog, cat, and two rabbits.
3:00-4:00pm SU 34 The Lochry Blockhouse: Authentic Westmoreland County History This course will focus on the Revolutionary War era fortification that stands in the Winnie Palmer Nature Reserve. Information discussed will include why the fortification was built, who built it, and the tragic events that followed. Students will also have the opportunity to learn about the cultures of colonists in Westmoreland County, and Native Americans living in Pennsylvania and Ohio. Learning about the Saint Vincent Blockhouse is important for students because it is one of the few remaining Revolutionary War era structures in the area. COST: $20 ROOM: Alfred Hall 31
Mr. Nicholas Urban is a junior at Saint Vincent College majoring in history with a minor in secondary education. He has enjoyed working as a history tutor at St. Vincent College, aiding students in writing papers and understanding difficult concepts. He is an active member of the Kappa Delta Pi National Education Honor Society, the billiards club, and has participated in several intramural sports. In addition to his activities at St. Vincent, Mr. Urban enjoys outdoor activities such as hiking, camping, and fishing.
3:00-4:00pm SU 35 Art, Art,Art…and more Art! Students will be introduced to a variety of 2-D art making materials. Instruction will consist of a materials demonstration from the teacher. Then the students will demonstrate their understanding by creating their own artwork with the new material. The final activity would provide an opportunity for the students to create a piece of art with a material or materials of their choosing. COST: $20 ROOM: Alfred Hall 38
Mr. Peter Martin is a continuing education student at Saint Vincent College seeking his K-12 Art Education certification. He earned his undergraduate degree in Studio Art from I.U.P and studied illustration and design at the Ringling College of Art and Design in Sarasota, Florida. He is competent in a wide variety of mediums and has a deep understanding of art making tools and materials. Mr. Martin is currently an active artist who has participated in many gallery shows in western Pennsylvania and southern Florida. His personal work consists mainly of landscape paintings inspired by the western Pennsylvania wilderness. In addition to being an active artist and aspiring teacher, Mr. Martin also enjoys spending his free time fly fishing, kayaking, and golfing.
3:00-4:00pm SU 36 It’s All About Drama This course will provide the opportunity for students to experience Stage basics, “Improv” games and activities, and learn general aspects about production. During the ten weeks, the students will review monologues, one act plays and participate in small group scenes. The culminating activity will be in the form of a theatrical presentation for parents and friends at the Barnes & Noble Bookstore in Greensburg, PA on the evening of November 17th. This should be an exciting semester and a lot of fun for those who enjoy “acting out”. COST: $50 ROOM: Foundations Room (Placid)
Mrs. Jeena Valentine is our new director this semester. She holds a B.S degree in Psychology from Saint Vincent College and an MS in Child Development from the University of Pittsburgh. In addition, she has extensive experience in dance, musical theater, and choreography. Mrs. Valentine has been a member of the Ligonier Valley Players for 13 years, and also served as Co-Director for the Children’s Theater. She is currently the Children’s Choir Director for the Valley Players Christmas production.
Ms. Ariel Byers, who will be assisting Mrs. Valentine, is a junior English major at Saint Vincent College. She works as a counselor at Outdoor Odyssey, a high-adventure youth mentoring camp. Ms. Byers is a member of many clubs around campus including Orientation Committee, The Company, and Academic Programming Board. In addition to her activities, she enjoys spending her time outside, caving, rafting, and rock climbing. She also serves as a mentor to at-risk youth in her community. Ms. Byers has worked with the STEP-UP Program for two semesters. 4:00-5:00pm SU 37 Around the World - without leaving Saint Vincent College! In this class, students will explore various cities and countries around the world without ever leaving the classroom! Each week a different part of the world will be explored through cultural foods, music, basic words in foreign languages, and the instructor’s and possibly students’ personal experiences and travel photos. Ms. Bonnie Pratt is a sophomore Elementary Instruction major from Erie, PA. She is the oldest of eight siblings and has enjoyed many experiences working with children, including babysitting, teaching Vacation Bible School at her parish, and assisting in an elementary classroom during high school. At SVC, Ms. Pratt is the secretary of the Respect Life Club and a member of the Orientation Committee and Alpha Lambda Delta. In addition to these activities, she enjoys singing, reading, traveling, and spending time with family and friends.
4:00-5:00pm SU 38 Fun with Puzzles and Shapes This course will focus on working with puzzles and shapes. Students will begin by learning basic geometric shapes and the shapes that can be created from them. Class activities will include: Archimedes Puzzle, use of the Venn Diagram for data analysis and probability, geometrical patterns, and games. The activities will give students basic knowledge of Geometry to build upon in later grades. COST: $20 ROOM: Alfred Hall 42
Mrs. Carolyn Bonelli is in the first year of her teacher’s certification in Secondary Mathematics. She received her Bachelor’s Degree in Applied Mathematics from the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg. Mrs. Bonelli has been married for 19 years and is the mother of three daughters who are 14, 11, and 6 years old. She has taught Sunday School for over 10 years and volunteers in her daughters’ schools. Prior to pursuing a teaching certification, Mrs. Bonelli worked as a computer programmer for United States Steel Corporation.
4:00-5:00pm SU 39 Immigration and You: The Melting Pot of Western PA This course will introduce students to the diversity and adversity of immigrants within the western PA who came to this country over its history. As they learn about the different cultures and ethnicities that made up the "melting pot" of our region, students will ultimately discover their individual family background. The primary focus of the course will be the understanding of the struggles and tribulations of families trying to make a new home for themselves in the new world. Also, the use of local towns and attractions will foster a greater understanding of their community as well as those around them. The class activities will involve taking the persona of the head of an immigrant household and experience the life experiences and lessons through that persona on a daily life setting. Other activities will allow the student to experience their own culture and experiences in comparison with those around them. This will instill self awareness and pride in oneself as well as understanding and compassion to the differences in others. COST: $20 ROOM: Alfred Hall 31
Mr. John Vida is senior at Saint Vincent College in Secondary Education Instruction with a minor in History. He has enjoyed working with children of all ages in coaching athletics for Ligonier Valley and Kiski Area School Districts as well as assisting his wife, who is a second grade teacher with the Ligonier Valley School District. He lives locally in the Latrobe area with his wife his and 2 year old son.

Students will be asked to evaluate possible ramifications of public websites such as Facebook and MySpace. Students will also be presented with difficult workplace situations in which they must evaluate an appropriate course of action. Current events regarding ethical decisions will be utilized to engage students in classroom discussion. COST: $20 ROOM: Alfred Hall 24
Ms. Lona Hoffman is a continuing education student at Saint Vincent College. Prior to seeking her BCIT teaching certification, Ms. Hoffman received a BA in Business Management from Seton Hill University in 2007. In addition to her formal education, Ms. Hoffman brings along 12 years of experience in production and manufacturing with an additional 2 years of experience in a global human resource department. She enjoys volunteering with various school organizations including Parents Assist in Learning (PAL), Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) as well as boosters for several athletic teams. Presently Ms. Hoffman holds a part-time position with Adelphoi Village, assisting and counseling troubled youth. Aside from school and work, Ms. Hoffman enjoys camping in the summer and snowboarding in the winter.
2:00-3:00pm SU 41 The Freedom Trail “Does the wind blow from the South today? “Moses” is coming you need to follow her. Freedom means following people you don’t know along a dangerous path, are you ready?” This course will introduce students to the importance of the Underground Railroad during the 1800’s. The students will be involved in many different activities that will illustrate the importance of symbols, songs and individuals utilized by the slaves along their pathway to freedom. Mrs. Tracey Surma has her undergraduate degree from Seton Hill University. She is now a full-time student at Saint Vincent College working on earning her Secondary Teaching Certification in Social Studies. She is a “stay-at-home” mother for four children ranging in age from 15 to four. She was a self-employed restaurant owner for 13 years (1993-2005). In addition to volunteering for many organizations, Mrs. Surma was Norvelt Elementary School’s PTO Secretary from 2003-2007. She taught second Grade CCD at St. Florian’s School and was a craft leader for St. Florian's Vacation Bible School from 1999-2003. Most importantly she was very involved with the planning and development of the Norvelt 75th Celebration during the last weekend of July 2009. Within this Celebration she is/was the contributing editor to the 75 Years of Homesteading: A Tribute to Norvelt. 2:00-3:00pm SU 42 Learning Math Concepts Through Games This course will introduce students to a variety of math concepts. After learning each topic, students will play a game that incorporates that topic. Students will be introduced to set theory and then play the game “Set.” Students will increase their problem solving skills and then play the game “24.” Students will be introduced to probability and then play “Yahtzee.” Students will learn mathematical definitions and be tested on their understanding on those definitions with “Math Bingo”. Many students are intimidated by math, but this course will aid in showing students that math can be fun. COST: $20 ROOM: Alfred Hall 3B
Ms. Amanda Cobetto is a graduate student at Saint Vincent College. She is taking classes toward both her Master’s Degree in Curriculum and Instruction as well as her teaching certificate for Secondary Mathematics. Ms. Cobetto earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Actuarial Mathematics from the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown. She participated in an independent study during her senior year of high school in a math classroom. Additionally, she has served as a tutor for fellow students and friends throughout her undergraduate program and beyond. In addition to these activities, Ms. Cobetto enjoys spending time with family and friends, miniature golfing, bowling, watching movies, and listening to music.
3:00-4:00pm SU 43 “Degree”(Sure or Unsure?), A Look at Geometry in Everyday Life This course will focus on everyday encounters with geometry. Students will step back and consider the practicality of geometry with regard to real life applications. As students learn about geometry, the information will be strengthened by everyday examples. Mr. Charles Krisfalusi is a continuing education student at Saint Vincent College with a degree in applied mathematics. He has studied education and is working towards certification. He has enjoyed time spent in various classrooms, along with the STEP Tutoring Program.

Students in this course where will explore the knowledge and skills needed for effective public speaking. Mr. Patrick Bradley is a member of Saint Vincent College’s Continuing Education program. He is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania where he majored in History. Mr. Bradley also has a law degree from Temple University. He has ten years of legal experience including cases involving antitrust price-fixing, securities fraud, and federal whistleblower litigation. Mr. Bradley also spent twelve years in the automotive industry working in sales, finance and management. He lives in Greensburg with his wife and two sons.
3:00-4:00pm SU 45 We’re all Made of Stardust Have you ever gazed into the endless starry night sky and pondered about the wonders of our home, the universe? Throughout this course, our trip through the cosmos will cover a range of topics in astronomy. We’ll journey through our solar system, speed by numerous galaxies, narrowly avoid dangerous black holes, and view other mysterious features right in our own galactic neighborhood. This course will also explore newer fields of study like astrobiology and theories that aim to unite our current understanding of the universe. COST: $20 ROOM: Alfred Hall 3B
Mr. Wade Schnorr is a graduate of Saint Vincent College with a B.S. in biology. He has been involved with coaching cross country at Geibel Catholic High School and assisting at Connellsville Area High School. Furthermore, he worked in conjunction with another biology teacher in the summer school program at Junior High West. While Mr. Schnorr attended Saint Vincent, he was a member of the cross country team and part of Alpha Lambda Delta. In high school, he graduated as valedictorian and received the Bausch and Lomb Science Award.
3:00-4:00pm SU 46 The Adventures of Billy Yank and Johnny Reb In this class, students will learn about the happenings of the American Civil War. They will receive a brief introduction to the events that caused the American Civil War and learn the differences between the Northern and Southern Armies. Such variations include the different uniforms of the troops; strategies of the Armies, and the different goals the North and South hoped to achieve. Through various activities they will know the outcomes of various battles of importance during the Civil War. COST: $20 ROOM: Alfred Hall 30 Mr. Zachary Krejdovsky is a junior at Saint Vincent College majoring in History with a minor in Secondary Education. During high school he worked with students throughout his district by teaching Junior Achievement classes. He was also the Treasurer of his senior class and demonstrated good leadership skills. At Saint Vincent, he is a member of the History Club and the Bowling Club. Mr. Krejdovsky also enjoys hanging out with his friends and family; as well as, being a member of the Varsity Swim Team at Saint Vincent.

As they learn about their family history, there will be particular focuses on immigration and migration, oral history, genetics and health, and maps and geography. Miss Danielle Golden is a graduate student at Saint Vincent College working towards her Master’s of Science in Special Education and her teaching certification in Social Studies. Miss Golden graduated from Saint Vincent College in 2007 with her Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and minored in Public Administration. Over the past two years, Miss Golden has been employed by the Connellsville Area School District as an Emergency Substitute. Miss Golden has subbed in all grades from Kindergarten to 12th grade. Also, she is employed as a Sales Associate at the mall. Miss Golden has done extensive work with various politicians in the Fayette County area. In addition, Miss Golden enjoys traveling, playing golf and tennis, and shopping.
4:00-5:00pm SU 49 The Healthcare Career Puzzle: How Many Pieces Are There? This course will serve as a guide for healthcare explorations. Throughout this course the students will become informed and enlightened about the vast array of healthcare opportunities that exist for future careers. The students will develop an appreciation for the roles of individual careers and how they all come together for a common cause. Mrs. Deana Mauro is a Continuing Education major at Saint Vincent obtaining a post-baccalaureate certificate in Biology. Previously, she obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Technology. She has worked at various hospital laboratories during her fifteen-year career. She is anxious to combine her real-life experience with the chance to teach. Her desire to teach reached its peak as she was teaching her young daughter how to read and write. In addition to work and school, Mrs. Mauro enjoys spending her free time with her husband and six-year old daughter.
4:00-5:00pm SU 50 An Electric Spud – and Other Foods for Thought This is a fun filled, hands-on course that will involve using different types of foods for scientific experiments. The ten lessons will be jam-packed with important facts, vocabulary, and visuals. Experiments will cover physics, chemistry, and basic electric properties, and much more. The class will have to build boxes to protect their eggs, so that they do not break if the box is dropped, and they will also be using potatoes to complete electrical circuits! Every lesson, the class will be enlightened through having fun! COST: $20 ROOM: Alfred Hall 30
Ms. Angela Sleith is a sophomore at Saint Vincent College majoring in Environmental Education with plans to also major in Earth Science. Growing up she was always involved in her community. In high school, she was involved in many leadership roles such as: a student mentor for freshman students, and belonged to Student Council, Spanish Club, Prom Committee, Homecoming Court, yearbook staff, and “Who’s Who”. She recently held the position of Co-captain of her varsity cheerleading team and the varsity team captain for her softball team. She continued her career of softball into her freshman year of college. She has worked at Bruster’s Ice Cream store for the past couple years, and enjoys dancing, decorating, and shopping.

Step-Up preschool students will experience an innovative preschool framework that integrates "Fred Rogers inspired" developmentally appropriate practices, literacy activities, and play in a carefully planned, print-rich environment that encourages the development of speaking and listening skills. COST: $20 ROOM: Faculty Dining Room (Placid 1A) Mrs. Kathy Beining is a veteran and experienced preschool teacher in the area who will supervise and bring a quality program to the STEP-UP Program. She is a graduate student at Saint Vincent College, and administrator for the Barbara Thompson Early Learning Center in Derry, PA.
Mrs. Tawny Vallana brings years of experience to the preschool learning environment. She will serve as the primary teacher for the STEP-UP Preschool. She has worked for WHO Headstart and Seton Hill Child Services in the area. In addition, Ms. Vallana has an Early Childhood Associates Degree and teaches at the Barbara Thompson Early Learning Center in Derry, PA. She is currently working on a Bachelors Degree in Early Childhood Education.
