2:00-3:00pm
SU 02 Making Math Fun!      This class will show students math can be fun by using manipulative math.  Students will learn basic math concepts using manipulatives to reinforce the concepts.  Various forms of fun activities will help to strengthen the students’ math skills.         COST:   $20          ROOM:     Alcuin    (Upper Level)

Ms. Maura Schmidt is a sophomore at Saint Vincent College majoring in Elementary Instruction and Early Childhood with a minor in Political Science.  She assisted at Upper St. Clair’s summer school helping teach math to first through fourth graders this past summer using manipulative math.  She enjoys volunteering at her church and at the local nursing home.  In addition to working with children, Ms. Schmidt enjoys horseback riding, working out, reading and spending time with her family and friends.

SU 03 Ciao Bella:       This course will introduce children to the Italian language. Throughout the classes, the students will use games and songs to learn the basics of this growing, beautiful language. The numerous class activities will encourage the students to learn the Italian colors, numbers, alphabet, months/days, and much more.

Ms. Bailey Steinhauser is a sophomore at Saint Vincent College, majoring in Elementary Instruction with a minor in Psychology. She has spent most of her summers working with pre-school through fifth grade students at her church teaching them about different Bible stories through art and games. In addition, she teachers Junior Church and babysits many of the younger children in her family and neighborhood.   In her spare time, Ms. Steinhauser enjoys spending time with friends, reading, and acting.

SU 04 A Fun Way to Learn How to Tell Time:       This course will introduce students how to tell time from two different clocks.  As the students look at a digital clock, they will have to match it to the appropriate analog clock.  Not only will this course give the students the ability to tell time on two different clocks, it will also be a fun way for them to learn.

Ms. Megan Kiebler is a sophomore at Saint Vincent College majoring in Elementary Education with a minor in Psychology.  She enjoyed working with first grade students as a Senior in High School.  She was also Yearbook Photographer and a volunteer at Meals on Wheels.  In addition to her activities, Ms. Kiebler enjoys playing the organ for a local church.

SU 05 Strolling Through The Seasons:   Come along as we adventure through each of the incredible seasons!  As we enter each new season, there will be stories, songs, and - best of all - crafts that will enlighten the students of the joys that each season brings.  The numerous class projects will encourage the students to be aware of how lucky we are to experience all four different seasons.    COST:    $20         ROOM:  Alcuin (Upper Level)

Ms. Sara Fulmer is a junior at Saint Vincent College majoring in Elementary and Early Childhood Education with a minor in Psychology.  She enjoyed working with and teaching sixth/seventh grade students during an internship for the Future Educators of America in High School.  She also enjoys her teaching position at a local preschool with children ranging in age from one to nine.  After accepting a local scholarship pageant title, Ms. Fulmer has pledged to be a continual role model for young children.  She has worked with young girls through Club Ophelia as a mentor - or as she likes to say - a motivator. Her interests include academics, dance, color guard, creative projects, and working with children.  In addition to her activities, Ms. Fulmer enjoys spending time with her family and playing with her pampered pooch.

SU 06 A Planting We Will Grow, Discover Interesting Facts about Plants:    In this science class, the students will discover how to identify the main parts of a plant, describe the importance of plants, and understand their many contributions to our society.  They will also be able to recall at least three products that are made from plants, as well as three uses of plants.    They will participate in fun class activities, plant their own plant to care for and watch it grow.            COST:   $20               ROOM:  Alcuin  (Upper Level)
 
Mrs. Kimberly Puskar is a junior at Saint Vincent College majoring in Elementary Instruction with a minor in Early Childhood Education.  She is a mother of two daughters, ages 11 and 13.  She has enjoyed working with children and being involved in many youth organizations.  Mrs. Puskar is a wife, mother and caregiver.  After recently becoming unemployed, she filled in as a secretary at several local schools and  discovered her desire for a career change and is now working on a degree in teaching. She looks forward to working together with parents, co-educators, and students in striving to reach each child’s highest level in learning.

SU 07 Gym with Jared:    In this course, the students will learn to play various sports and activities such as Kick Ball, Four Square and Bowling.  They will learn the rules and participate in these games with a strong emphasis on sportsmanship and teamwork.  Education of proper stretching and other warm-up activities will also be covered.

Mr. Jared Brasher is a continuing education student at Saint Vincent College.  He graduated in 2008 with a degree in Physics and a minor in Mathematics.  He is currently pursuing a certification in Secondary Education.  Mr. Brasher was Vice President of the Physics Club as well as an active member of the Ultimate Frisbee Club, helping to organize events on and off campus.  In his spare time,  he enjoys producing movies with his friends, one of which they entered into Saint Vincent’s I-Movie Film Festival and earned 2nd place.

SU 08 It’s All Drama to Me  (K-3rd Grade):      Early learners will be introduced to the art of drama through improvisation, open monologues, and group scenes.  The students will be encouraged to express their creativity while sharing the stage with other young “actors”.  No reading ability required!     COST:   $50            ROOM:  Science Amphitheater
 
Mr. Mike MacConnell is a senior at Saint Vincent College majoring in Elementary Education.  He has taken many acting courses and has performed in many shows including favorites Fiddler on the Roof (Mendel) and Bye Bye Birdie (Mr. MacAfee).  This is his third semester teaching drama with the Step-Up program.
 
Ms. Jennifer Hendrick is a senior at Saint Vincent College majoring in English Education with a minor in Communication.  She recently directed Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat through Saint Vincent’s student-run musical group - The Company.  In 2005, she was awarded Greensburg Area Cultural Council Judges McCormick and Pezze award of Artistic Merit Theatre and earned an honorable mention in the Shakespeare Monologue Contest through Pittsburgh Public Theatre in 2004.  She has participated in over eleven major productions throughout the past seven years.

SU 09 Mysteries of Science:   In this course, students will explore some of nature’s hidden secrets.  They will learn that what might appear to be an ordinary, hard, rough rock may be a geode containing a bed of sparkling crystals.  The metaphoric process of how a funny, fuzzy caterpillar will eventually turn into a beautiful winged butterfly will be covered.  A discussion on how delicious golden honey is made by that buzzing little honey bee.  These topics and others will be included in numerous class activities to encourage students to be more aware of the elements of nature that surround them.

Ms. Amy Siwula is beginning her graduate studies in Special Education this fall.  For the past five years, she has had many memorable experiences working with infants and toddlers with special needs and their families through her work in the Fayette County Early Intervention Program.  Along with her work, Ms. Siwula enjoys traveling with her family, especially to unusual landmarks.  She has acquired an extensive collection of pins, postcards, and bumper stickers from her adventures.  This winter, Ms. Siwula once again hopes to perfect her crocheting skills to add to her other collection, which consists of slightly misshaped but loved homemade scarves and hats.

SU 10 Fun with 3D: Make it and Take it:   This course will introduce students to various fun filled arts and crafts. Its main focus will be on 3D activities; such as making play-doh, origami, and many more enjoyable activities.  These activities will also help students to develop good listening skills, a quality that is essential in our everyday lives.

Miss Michelle Allemang is a Sophomore at Saint Vincent College majoring in Elementary Instruction with a minor in Psychology.  She worked with young children
this past summer at the South Hills YMCA where she was a swimming instructor.  In addition, she enjoys playing lacrosse for the Saint Vincent Lady Bearcats.

SU 11 The World of Jan Brett:       The children will experience some of the fine literature and beautiful pictures books written by and/or illustrated by the famous children’s author Jan Brett.  The students will be engaged in many fun activities and even learn how to draw some of the animals in the stories.  

Ms. Erika Haggerty is a student at Saint Vincent College majoring in Elementary Instruction.   In addition to her many activities, she participates in the Saint Vincent College field hockey team and enjoys working with children.

SU 13 Hey! We love the USA!    This course will cover geography, capitals, and other fun facts about the United States of America. As students learn about our country, they will also be focusing on the cultures and local events of each state. The many activities and projects throughout the course of the class will motivate students to develop a greater understanding of the place we all call home - America.

Miss Jessica Campbell is a Junior at Saint Vincent College majoring in Mathematics with a minor in Secondary Education. She has enjoyed working with middle school and high school students as a Youth Minister in Pittsburgh. She is a Girl Scout Gold Award recipient and has been a volunteer at Sarah Heinz House, a Boys & Girls Club. In addition to her activities, Miss Campbell also enjoys spending time with her friends and family.

SU 14 Kid's Kitchen  Throughout this course, students will learn the basics about a kitchen. Students will learn the appropriate way to use a knife, use measuring cups, follow a recipe, and much more. Also, students will learn about nutritional and healthy foods, along with why they are important.

Ms. Erica Marchesi is a junior in the Elementary Education program, with a specialization in Math. She has worked in a day care center for over a year, mainly teaching pre-school. While in high school, Ms. Marchesi was a catechetical instructor for kindergarten and fifth grades at her church in Washington, Pennsylvania. Ms. Marchesi also enjoys cooking, spending time with her family, and playing various sports, such as volleyball, softball, soccer, and basketball.

SU 15 Holidays Around the World    We all know how holidays are celebrated in America, but how do other countries celebrate?  This course will allow students to explore the different holidays celebrated in several countries around the world. Students will also participate in craft activities related to each country’s holiday celebrations. The course is designed to be sensitive to various cultures, and will not focus on a particular religion.  COST:$20          ROOM: ALFRED 3A

Ms. Susan Prunty is a junior at Saint Vincent College majoring in Elementary Instruction with a cognate in Mathematics.  Although she began her career at Saint Vincent as a Business major, she recently discovered her true passion to become an Elementary teacher.  She has worked with children as a volunteer for a summer reading program during high school, was senior class treasurer, and a member of her high school’s chapter of the National Honor’s society.  She is currently a member of the Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society and will join the education club this fall.  In addition to these activities, Ms. Prunty enjoys spending time with her family and attending campus events.

SU 16 Painting like the Pros   This course will introduce students to famous artists such as Da Vinci, Monet, Van Gough, Munch, Picasso, Dali, O’Keefe, and Warhol and the art movements related to these artists.  After observing the color, brush strokes, shapes, and geometric figures used in the artists’ paintings, students will attempt to create their own masterpieces that are reminiscent of famous works.

Ms. Mary Mobley is a junior at Saint Vincent College majoring in English with a concentration in Secondary Education.  She enjoys teaching school-age children at a daycare during the summer, and she will continue to work during the school year as an English tutor.  In addition, she participates in school organizations such as The Company (a student-run theatrical/musical group) and the Honors Program.  Her other interests include playing volleyball, painting, sketching, and spending time with her friends and family.

SU 17 Uno, Dos, Tres… Spanish as easy as 1, 2, 3!   This course will introduce young children to the Spanish Language. During the 10 weeks, students will learn basic Spanish skills such as numbers, colors, the days of the week, along with other Spanish vocabulary. All students will have the opportunity to participate in Spanish games, songs, dialogues, activities, and crafts that will enrich their learning of the Spanish Language! Hasta luego!

Miss Lauren Cross is a junior at Saint Vincent College majoring in Elementary Instruction. She enjoyed working with fourth grade students at Saint Margaret Mary School in her hometown of Harrisburg as part of an education class at Harrisburg Area Community College. She also enjoyed tutoring students from Saint Margaret Mary’s this past summer in a variety of subjects. In her free time, Miss Cross enjoys traveling, being outdoors, and spending time with her family and friends.

SU 19 Mamma Mia, It’s Italia!    This course is designed to introduce students to Italy’s culture and language.  The students will learn the basics of the Italian language, such as, greetings, colors, days of the week, months, family members, and more!  Students will also learn about traditions Italians have during their holidays among other cultural aspects.  Fun interactive methods, such as making Italian flags, family trees, and more will be used to teach this subject.     COST:   $20         ROOM:  ALFRED 36

Ms. Sara Kamarchik is a sophomore at Saint Vincent College majoring in Elementary Instruction with a minor in Psychology.  She has worked in the Seneca Valley School District as an elementary teacher’s aide.  During the summer, she worked for three weeks at a camp that provided autistic children with fun and educational activities.  At Saint Vincent, she participates in the Best Buddy Program, the March of the Bearcats (Saint Vincent’s band), and the Student Council for Exceptional Children.

SU 20 Computers for Kids An Introduction to Today’s Most Popular Technology:    This course will introduce students to the basics of the computer, starting with computer parts and their purposes.  Using visual aids, the functions of the keyboard, monitor, and tower will be discussed so students will feel comfortable before using the computer.  As the course progresses, students will learn the programs of Microsoft Word and PowerPoint and how they can be used in everyday life.  Also, students will become familiar with the common vocabulary necessary to run the computer.  Although this is a hand-on computer class, numerous activities will be completed prior to using the computer so students understand the meaning and function behind the programs.

Ms. Mallory Reese is a junior at Saint Vincent College majoring in Business, Computer, and Information Technology and is working towards a K-12 education certification.  She serves as secretary in the Women in Business and Rotaract clubs on campus.  In high school, she volunteered for her church’s Sunday school classes, as well as throughout the community.  In addition to her activities, Ms. Reese enjoys spending time with her family and friends, reading, scrap booking, and golfing. 

SU 21 Fitness is Fun  This course stresses the importance of keeping oneself fit and healthy, and will introduce students to many fun ways in order to do this. The course includes basic stretches and warm-ups, and also many playground games such as:  hopscotch, jump rope games, and even some twists on the classics such as Duck-Duck-Goose, and Mother May I.     COST:   $20         ROOM:  ALFRED 44

Ms. Alyssa Dye is a sophomore at Saint Vincent College majoring in Mathematics and minoring in secondary education.  She is a member of the Lady Bearcat Volleyball Team and also a Mathematics tutor on campus.  She enjoyed participating in the annual musicals in high school and served as an officer of Student Council, CAHS Patriots, and her senior class.  She was also a member of the National Honor Society and Chamber Ensemble.  In her spare time, Ms. Dye enjoys playing sports and spending time with family and friends.

SU 28 Beware of the Black Hole!    During this course, students will be able to find out more about their favorite parts of the Solar System! We will be looking at planets, constellations, comets, and even talking a little about the astronauts and more! Students will learn lots about mysteries of outer space and even get to do some really fun activities!      COST:   $20          ROOM:   ALFRED 41
 
Ms. Nicole Adams is a Sophomore at Saint Vincent College majoring in Elementary Education. She greatly enjoys working with children and young people of all ages, and liked being a tutor to young children during high school.   She has been an active 4-H member for 7 years, guiding new members with Teen Leadership Experience. She also loves to help with anything involving her church and local community. Ms. Adams is the oldest of 7 children and loves animals.

SU 29 Color Me Russian:   This course is designed to teach the beginnings of the Russian language.  Students will learn how to greet a person, learn the alphabet, learn basic vocabulary, and write words and fun sentences.  They will also listen how to speak various words in Russian.  Also they will receive background information about the beautiful culture of Russia.    COST:    $20         ROOM:  ALFRED 42

Ms. Olga L. Silvasy is a junior attending Saint Vincent College.  She is majoring in Mathematics and earning a minor in Secondary Education.  She enjoyed working with younger children to teach them how to draw and using their imagination through art for her senior project in High School.  She was a National Honor Society Member throughout high school.  As a member of the society she tutored younger children in different schools.   She is a native speaking Russian and works as a server at an American cuisine sit down restaurant.

SU 30 Zeus, Hercules and the Legends and Mysteries of Ancient Greece:   In this class we will cover many of the stories from Greek Mythology. The students will learn about the heroes and villains who ruled the universe through the eyes of the Greeks. We will learn about King Zeus and his rule on Mt. Olympus, Hercules and his many adventures, Hates and his rule over the underworld, and many other of the characters and creatures from Greek Mythology. The students in the course will also be able to make their own ancient artifacts, tell their own stories, and even play games that children from ancient Greece would play. The students will also learn about symbolism and will be able to create their own symbols and pictures to tell their own story from Ancient Greece.

Mr. Justin Pierce is a History major at Saint Vincent College with a minor in Secondary Education.  He has served on Student Government for two years as a Senator for the Class of 2010, and has worked on the Activities Programming Board.  In addition to playing football and baseball for the Saint Vincent Bearcats, Mr. Pierce has also coached grade school football and little league baseball for five years.  He is an honors graduate from Trinity Area High School in Washington, Pennsylvania.

SU 31 It’s All Drama to Me  (4th-12th Grade)   Students will learn about theatrical drama through improvisation activities, monologues and much more.  Students will become playwright, producer, director, and set designer as they prepare an original group scene for the final show.    COST:   $50        ROOM:  Science Amphitheater

SU 32 Walking Wildly:   Participants will get an opportunity to learn about and observe North American Wildlife during this 10 week course. A variety of animals will be discussed, such as the Black Bear and Whitetail deer.  Kids will get the opportunity to view birds and look for some of North America’s smaller animals.

After serving two terms in Americorps,  Ms. Christina Sterck graduated from Slippery Rock University with a Bachelor’s of Science in Environmental Education. She has worked with children at a variety of facilities such as the Princeton-Blairstown Center of Princeton University, Children’s Home of Easton, Yellowstone National Park and Laurel Hill State Park.  Ms. Sterck is currently employed as a Naturalist at Powdermill Nature Reserve in Rector.  She lives with her two crazy cats, Dot and Dash, in Ligonier.

SU 33 Sports History:  In this class, students will learn the history of many sports and how these sports have evolved to what they are today.  During class, videos will be used to view how some sports are played and to show how certain sports have developed.  This class also teaches students the importance of teamwork in sports and everyday life.

Mr. Jaison Wallace is a junior at Saint Vincent College majoring in Business Education Information Technology.  He is also active in Activities Programming Board and the Orientation Committee.  In addition, he is also part of the Bearcat football team here at Saint Vincent College.

SU 34 Extra! Extra! Read All About It!      This communications-based course will provide the basis for later experience in writing for the newspaper, shooting photos for the yearbook, designing pages for a magazine, and broadcasting a sports event.

Ms. Alexandra Shasko is a junior at Saint Vincent College majoring in English Education with a minor in Spanish. Alex is a member of Kappa Delta Pi and Sigma Tau Delta; two prestigious honor societies offered at SVC. In addition, she is a representative in SAAC, an athletic program in which chosen athletes partake in community service within the athletic program at Saint Vincent College. Alex is a member of the women’s soccer program at Saint Vincent where she starts as a midfielder and was recently nominated team captain. She has received a number of athletic honors throughout her career.  In addition to her activities, Ms. Shasko enjoys spending time with her family and friends, working out, skiing, swimming, and watching the Pittsburgh Steelers.

SU 35 Croissants, Art and The Tour de France: The Culture and History of the French: In this ten-week course, the basics of French culture will be discussed. In the first couple of weeks, the students will learn the geography, a short history and famous leaders, all which include enrichment activities.  The topics range from the different regions of France to Napoleon. In the second part of the course, the students will learn the culture, which includes: food, art and music. The last part of the course will be an elementary learning experience with the language and the French influences. All these subjects will give the student an excellent overview of who the French people are.

Mr. Timothy O’Mara is a Senior History Education Major at Saint Vincent College. He is involved in many sports and extra-curricular activities such as Cross Country for 4 seasons and Track for 3.  He has been on Student Government for 2 years and Orientation Committee for 3 years.  In his spare time, Mr. O’Mara enjoys reading a good book, seeing a good movie, taking pictures, traveling and sports (especially running).

SU 36 Reading, Writing, Exciting Poetry:   This course will introduce students to the art of poetry. Students will learn how to properly read and analyze various poems in order to gain a better understanding and appreciation of the format. Through various lessons and discussions, students will learn about the styles and elements of poetry, including figurative language, imagery, rhyme, form and meter. Students will also have the opportunity to create some of their own poetry during the course.

Mr. Matthew Zeoli is a continuing education student at Saint Vincent College majoring in English Education (7-12). He holds a bachelors degree in Communications from the Indiana University of Pennsylvania. He works with the YMCA’s school age childcare program at Maxwell Elementary School, is a counselor at YMCA’s summer day camp and is also an Eagle Scout. In addition to his interest in English, Mr. Zeoli loves reading, movies and playing the guitar.

SU 37 Authors’ Creation Station:  This course will give students a chance to delve into their creative sides. Students will write and illustrate short stories, fairytales, poems, and even work together to write a “group story.” At the end of the course, each student will receive their own booklet containing their works from throughout the course.

Miss Alexis Davis is a sophomore at Saint Vincent College majoring in Elementary Instruction. She has worked with children in various capacities including teaching Kindergarteners in Junior Achievement during high school, as well as teaching the pre-school Sunday school class at her church. She has also volunteered numerous years as the Games Director for Vacation Bible School at her church and as a Unit Leader at Blue Spruce Girl Scout Day Camp. Miss Davis is a work-study at the Saint Vincent Post Office and worked as an office assistant in a physician’s office this past summer. In her spare time, Miss Davis enjoys spending time with her friends and family.

SU 40 Math Matters, Geometry and Its Real World Applications:  This class will answer the famous math student question of “when will I ever need this?”  In this class, students will learn geometric concepts and terms and then learn how they are used in every day life. Students will also learn how to work properly in groups.

Mr. Phil Parks is a junior math engineering major that is converting to secondary mathematics education at Saint Vincent College. He has coached football at the middle school level for two years and enjoys working with this age level.  Mr. Parks was a member of the National Honor Society in high school.   He was also involved in his school’s LEO Club and did various volunteer works in his community.

SU 41 From William Pitt to the Big City Lights: The History of Pittsburgh:  This course will show students the development of the city of Pittsburgh as well as the economical affect it had on Pennsylvania. They will learn about how Pittsburgh was founded by William Pitt and go chronologically through time to modern day Pittsburgh. The students will experience an in-depth look at Pittsburgh that will include famous landmarks and people that have made the city what it is today. The course will allow students to learn about the city’s humble beginnings to the way we see the “Steel City” today and everything in between.       COST:  $20          ROOM:  PREP 215
Mr. Andrew Puleo is a junior at Saint Vincent College majoring in History with a minor in Secondary Education. He is an avid Pittsburgh Steeler fan. He has helped coach his hometown JV basketball team.  He is in many clubs and enjoys partaking in club activities. In addition to these activities Mr. Puleo enjoys reading historical items, playing sports and spending time with friends and family. This summer Mr. Puleo was employed by a steel company and received an up close look at the US steel companies’ dilemma.

SU 42 It’s All Drama to Me  (4th-12th Grades)   Students will learn about theatrical drama through improvisation activities, monologues and much more.  Students will become playwright, producer, director, and set designer as they prepare an original group scene for the final show.       COST:   $50            ROOM:  Science Amphitheater   
 
Mr. Mike MacConnell is a senior at Saint Vincent College majoring in Elementary Education.  He has taken many acting courses and has performed in many shows including favorites Fiddler on the Roof (Mendel) and Bye Bye Birdie (Mr. MacAfee).  This is his third semester teaching drama with the Step-Up program.


Ms. Jennifer Hendrick is a senior at Saint Vincent College majoring in English Education with a minor in Communication.  She recently directed Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat through Saint Vincent’s student-run musical group, The Company.  In 2005, she was awarded Greensburg Area Cultural Council Judges McCormick and Pezze award of Artistic Merit Theatre and earned an honorable mention in the Shakespeare Monologue Contest through Pittsburgh Public Theatre in 2004. She has participated in over eleven major productions throughout the past seven years.

SU 43 CSI:  You’re the detective!   In this class we will discuss the various ways to find clues at the scene of a crime.  We will test the student’s detective skills by using a crime scene.  We will learn fingerprinting, how to use a black light to detect various items at a crime scene, and various other crime scene objects.  At the end of the class the student will be able to actually act as a detective as he/she tries to solve a case for herself/himself!

Ms. Ashley Benzio is a senior at Saint Vincent College majoring in Business, Computer and Information Technology and Accounting.  She enjoys babysitting for her friends and working as a student trainer at Saint Vincent.  Ashley works numerous basketball camps over the summer with children of all ages, and is also on the Saint Vincent Lady Bearcats Basketball team.  In her spare time, Ashley enjoys spending time with family and friends, running, and performing various sports.

SU 44 The Case of the Disappearing Animals: Endangered Species  This course will provide students with an overview of endangered species.  Students will investigate specific animals that are endangered while exploring the major factors that have led to their endangered status.  Class discussion and activities, combined with literature highlighting Earth’s endangered species, will help introduce important concepts, such as biodiversity and conservation.  Students will learn why certain species are endangered, what needs to be done to save them, and why it is so important that they are saved.

Mr. Brandon Kelly graduated from Saint Vincent College in May of 2002 with a Bachelors Degree in Finance.  He has been working in the financial services and banking industry for the past 6 years.  He has also enjoyed working with high school students as the head baseball coach at Elderton Junior/Senior High School for the past two years, and will continue in that capacity in the future.  Mr. Kelly also enjoys spending time outdoors with his wife and their two children.

SU 45 Traveling through China:   Through the use of traditional Chinese folklore, students will come to learn about the traditions, culture, history, art, language, and stories of China. Students will study the major holidays of China, and have to opportunity to have their own tea ceremony and sample a traditional Chinese dish. Through the reading and comparing of traditional Chinese tales with their English counterparts, children will also learn new vocabulary and build their reading skills—all while experiencing Chinese culture. Students will work independently and in groups to respond to fables, while also writing and illustrating their own. Music and film will also be used, as students will be given the opportunity to view clips of Chinese opera, ballet, and children’s programming.

Ms. Jillian Janflone is a sophomore student at Saint Vincent College, studying English with a Secondary Education concentration. She also is pursuing minors in History and International Studies, with a focus on China. In addition to her studies, Ms. Janflone is active on campus by participating in the Shakespeare Club, Human Rights Organization, and the women’s Cross-country team. She is also a freshman prefect. As a high school senior, Jillian taught an 8th grade creative writing class.  This teaching was done through the Washington High School Future Teachers of America Club, of which Jillian was president. Jillian has also taught CCD and Children’s Liturgy of the Word for Immaculate Conception Church, and has worked as a volunteer with Citizen’s Library and the American Cancer Society.

SU 46 Phantastic Photoshop This hands-on class involves the creation and manipulation of photographic images though the use of the computer program Adobe Photoshop. Students will learn the basic tools and functions of the program and explore its many features while they create unique digital art!

Miss Annie Cerutti is an accomplished artist and illustrator who earned her Bachelors Degree in Illustration from Ringling College of Art & Design. She currently attends Saint Vincent College as a graduate student obtaining her K-12 teaching certificate in art.  For the past year, she has taught various classes at a special F/X college in the illustration department. In her spare time, Miss Cerutti enjoys doing anything creative!

SU 47 The Power to Live    From wood to nuclear power, in this course we will learn the history and evolution of energy as applied to human endeavors.  We will discuss how various forms of energy production affect our lives and the environment.  We will also explore the future of energy production as the need for renewable energy sources become more critical.  We will even try our hands at harnessing our own energy.

Mr. Timothy Zema graduated from Saint Vincent College in 1995 and received his Bachelors Degree in Biology.  Between graduation and the present he worked as a forensic technician.  He is now returning to school at Saint Vincent College for his teacher’s certification in the area of Biology.  As an undergrad, Mr. Zema played baseball for the Bearcat's, and he now enjoys sharing his love for the sport with his two children and by volunteering in the local Little League.

SU 48 The Aquatic World of Marine Animals     This course will give students a chance to lean about various marine animals from sponges and hydra to great white sharks and blue whales. Students will learn that the world of animals is not limited to the vertebrates, but also species that are normally thought to be plants.  Students will be engaged through lecture and many hands-on activities.

SU 50 The Roaring Twenties:  At the end of World War I, America felt invincible.  They had been the deciding factor in what was up to that point the greatest conflict in human history.  This enrichment course will follow the social and cultural trends of the decade and examine samples of literature, music, and art of the period.  The final goal of the course will to draw conclusions as to how the decade culminated in the disastrous Stock Market Crash of 1929 that brought about the Great Depression.

Mr. Justin Pacini is a sophomore at Saint Vincent College majoring in History with a minor in Secondary Education.  In high school, he enjoyed helping instruct the Middle School band as a graduation project, and was a member of the high school band.  He also coached a youth soccer team in the spring, and was a member of the Brentwood High School varsity soccer team.  Justin is also the president of Saint Vincent’s Education Club.  In the summer, Justin is employed at Liberty USA.  While not involved with school, Justin enjoys reading, movies, and spending time with friends and family.

SU 51 DNA Decoded!   This beginner’s genetics course is an introduction to our genetic blueprint, DNA. The course will cover DNA structure and replication, DNA transmission from one generation to the next, genetic disorders, predictive genetics, and modern laboratory techniques in this exciting field. Students will learn through viewing documentaries, performing hands-on activities, and preparing short presentations to share with the class. The goals of the course are for students to develop a functional understanding of DNA structure, function, and real-world relevance as well as an appreciation for this amazing molecule.

Ms. Elisabeth Talamo is a senior at Saint Vincent College and is pursuing a major in Biology and a minor in Secondary Education. She played softball and was flute section leader in the marching band at Franklin Regional Senior High School. She currently tutors Biology, is a note-taker for Chemistry, serves as Secretary of the Equestrian Team, and is a member of the Honors Program and Alpha Lambda Delta Honors Society at Saint Vincent College. In addition to her activities, Ms. Talamo enjoys spending time with her family, horseback riding, drawing, traveling, and volunteering at her local mammalian wildlife shelter.

SU 53 Leaving Your Legacy: Leadership and Teamwork 101:    Everyone strives to leave their impact on the world. This course will illustrate and help students leave their mark through leadership. By taking part in both physical and mental challenges, applying a variety of leadership philosophies to their lives, and discovering the importance of bonding and teamwork, students will learn the basic principles to becoming a leader in the community. This course will take students out of their comfort zones, as they rely on others for support and encouragement. Ms. Ariel Byers is a sophomore English major at Saint Vincent College. She works as a counselor at Outdoor Odyssey, a high-adventure youth mentoring camp, and at Archabbey Publications. Ariel is a member of many clubs around camp including Orientation Committee, The Company, and Academic Programming Board. In addition to her activities, Ms. Byers enjoys spending her time outside, caving, rafting, and rock climbing. She also serves as a mentor to at-risk youth in her community.

SU 54 Inventions and Modern Marvels:    This course highlights on individuals who have designed ways to make our lives easier today. Individuals include prominent figures in History and those who may not be as well known. Students will be required to research two of these people, put together a short presentation using visual aids to inform their peers and participate in classroom discussions.

Ms. Amy Bayura is a sophomore at Saint Vincent College majoring in History with a minor in Secondary Education. She was a member of the Girl Scouts for eleven years and earned the Girl Scout Gold Award. While in high school, she was the clarinet section and rank leader with the marching band. In addition to her activities, Ms. Bayura enjoys spending time with her family and working as a server at a local family restaurant.

SU 55 Innovative Writing:   This course will help students to open their minds to the technique of writing by helping them create and discover their own styles of writing. The genres of writing will include poetry, non-fiction, fiction and prose. The activities of this class will encourage the students to learn from one another as well as from the instructor. In addition to helping the students learn their own styles of writing they will learn to edit and simplify their own work as well as others.

Ms. Emma Goetz is a sophomore at Saint Vincent College majoring in English Instruction with a minor in Creative Writing. She has enjoyed working with Elementary students at Drew Model School in Arlington, VA as a Senior Project in High School as well as for a project as a freshman in college. She was also a National Honor Student and enjoyed running track and cross country throughout high school as well as in college. In addition to her activities, Ms. Emma enjoys being around her family and working in Bethany Beach, DE as a pool guard for Sea Colony Aquatics.

SU 56 The History of Modern Sports:    This course will provide students with information on various popular sports played in today’s school system. Students will focus on the key people involved in founding the sport, the customs when the sport started, and how the sport has evolved in the 21st century. Class activities will give each student a general understanding of each sport –when it started and how it works today- and well-known athletes forever remembered for their contribution to their particular sport.

Mr. Nate Dippold is a junior at Saint Vincent College majoring in Math and minoring in Education. He has greatly enjoyed running track and cross country in high school and his first year of college. He played basketball in high school and the summer leagues in his town. He has also taught guitar lessons to students of all different ages, and continues to be active in his band at college.

SU 57 Swing Dance:   This course will be a fun and up beat class on social swing dance. In each class the students will be taught a new swing dance move while getting to enjoy a blast from the past with very up beat swing music. This will be a fun and exciting class that also involves exercise as well as recreation so get you dancing shoes ready!

Ms. Stephanie Compton is a sophomore Elementary Instruction major at Saint Vincent College. Stephanie not only has been a member of 4-H for most of her life but also enjoyed being a 4-H camp counselor for many years, where she got to work closely with children of many ages. Stephanie has also been a former member the National Honor Society and the junior achievement program where she taught first graders. She also participates in many clubs on campus such as swing dance, ballroom dance, mixed martial arts, fencing and the human rights organization.

SU 58 Stepping Up to the Challenge:     This course will test the students' knowledge of important historical events by decade. In a Jeopardy style forum, students will choose from various categories such as places, dates, people, and phrases to earn points. Near the end of every class will be a wrap up session in which unfamiliar topics will be discussed.

Miss Nicole Peer is a sophomore at Saint Vincent College majoring in Elementary Education.  She has volunteered as a sixth grade counselor for the Latrobe Area School District and instructed tennis for children ages four through fifteen via the Latrobe-Unity Parks and Recreation Board.     In addition, Ms. Peer was a member of the National Latin Honor Society and Letterman’s Club.   She enjoys spending time with friends and scrap booking in her spare time.

Something for every child!  Step-Up preschool students will experience an innovative preschool framework that integrates "Fred Rogers inspired" developmentally appropriate practices, literacy activities, and play in a carefully planned, print-rich environment that encourages the development of speaking and listening skills.

Mrs. Kathy Beining is a veteran and experienced preschool teacher in the area who will supervise and bring a quality program to the STEP-UP Program.    She is a graduate student at Saint Vincent College, and administrator for the Barbara Thompson Early Learning Center in Derry, PA.

Mrs. Tawny Vallana brings years of experience to the preschool learning environment. She will serve as the primary teacher for the STEP-UP Preschool.  She has worked for WHO Headstart and Seton Hill Child Services in the area. In addition, Ms. Vallana has an Early Childhood Associates Degree and teaches at the Barbara Thompson Early Learning Center in Derry, PA.  She is currently working on a Bachelors Degree in Early Childhood Education.
