Krystal Weissert will travel to Peru and Machu Picchu, thanks to a grant
she has received through the Elizabeth and Tom Andreoli Traveling Scholar
fund.
She describes how her trip will assist her senior research. "I will be doing
research on herbal eye care before going to Peru and Machu Picchu. Here I will
have the opportunity to talk to Shamanic healer about herbal supplements and
techniques that the people in the area use for eye care. I will also get the
chance to explore the regions of the tropical rainforest to learn about the
climate, geography, history, ecosystems and culture. I will learn about the
diversity of plant-based medicines and the holistic and alternative ways to
heal. One of my destinations is Machu Picchu, where I will get to see the Lost
City of the Incas. Other places that I will travel to include Puerto Maldonado,
Lake Sandoval, Madre de Dios River, Cusco, Urubamba Valley and Kenko. Upon
returning from my trip, I will compile a research paper on herbal eye care for
one credit in the fall of my senior year. This will help me in my future because
I am applying to optometry school to become an eye doctor."
