There are several steps in the study abroad application process. Early planning is essential to meet deadlines and many programs fill early. Do not submit the program specific application until you have received the approval to proceed. If you apply to a program without official approval from the Study Abroad Office, your credits from the outside program may not transfer to SVC and you will not be eligible for institutional financial aid.
Complete the Intent to Enroll Form (The purpose of this document is to inform your faculty advisor and the study abroad office of your intent to pursue a study abroad semester.
ELIGIBILITY
- You must have completed at least one full time semester in order to be considered for study abroad.
- You must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75 in order to be granted permission to study abroad. If you do not meet the minimum GPA requirement, please contact the Study Abroad Office,
- Students on academic or disciplinary probation or suspension, or with other serious disciplinary records, are not eligible for off-campus study.
IMPORTANT DATES and INFORMATION
INTENT TO ENROLL FORM – due to the Study Abroad office with an unofficial transcript/grade report
- Spring 2010 study abroad deadline: October 9, 2009
- Fall 2010 study abroad and full-year abroad 2010-2011 deadline: February 26, 2010
- Spring 2011 deadline: October 1, 2010
APPLICATION AND APPROVAL PROCESS
- Meet with your faculty advisor about your study abroad plans
- Complete Intent to Enroll Form with a grade report. The grade report can be sent via email and your faculty advisor should submit the Intent Form and grade report by email to the Study Abroad Office.
- You will be notified electronically of your approval to proceed and receive the Confirmation packet electronically.
- Once approved to proceed, apply to your study abroad program by program specific due date.
NOTE: The Study Abroad Office is not responsible for filing applications for students. Make sure you know your program’s application deadline. You may be denied acceptance to a program if your application is late. - Once accepted by your program abroad, complete the Confirmation form due by the due date
ONCE YOU ARE APPROVED TO PROCEED
- Apply to your study abroad program.
- Submit the Confirmation Form by the deadline. This form establishes a contractual understanding between the student and the College.
- Passports: If you do not have a passport, begin applying immediately – it can be a lengthy process. If you have a passport, make sure it is valid for at least six months beyond the end date of your program; if it is not, you should begin the renewal process immediately.
- Pre-departure: Attend the mandatory pre-departure orientation before leaving campus. These are held late in the semester. You will be contacted with specific dates.
- A $500 study abroad fee will be assessed each semester a student studies abroad.
