Definition of Terms

Apparatus - A fire or EMS emergency vehicle, such as am ambulance, engine, tanker, rescue, or brush truck.

Department - The entire organization, property, and apparatus, which functions to provide fire and life safety protection to a well-defined area.

Firefighter - An operational or other active member who is trained and equipped to respond to emergency incidents and participate in emergency operations.

Incident Scene - The location including and immediately surrounding any incident at which members of the department are operating, including fire emergencies, vehicle accidents, emergency medical incidents, rescues, hazardous material emergencies and other incidents.

Chain of Command - Chief, Assistant Chief, Captain, 1st. Lieutenant, 2nd Lieutenant, Engineer, followed by most senior member.

Operational firefighter - A firefighter at least 18 years of age, who meets the requirements outlined in SVFD SOG 5.

Probationary Firefighter - A member of the Department who has not yet completed the requirements outlined in SVFD SOG 5.

SCBA - Self-contained Breathing Apparatus.

Working Incident - Any fire or non-fire response, which requires active interior firefighting, victim rescue, body recovery, or significant citizen evacuation, or results in significant or unusual risk to members.
