Hazardous Material Response
- Hazardous materials are any substance or material, in any form or quantity, which pose an unreasonable risk to life, the environment, or property when stored, transported or used in commerce.
- All responding personnel will don full PPE and SCBA as directed by line officers or incident command.
- Position apparatus safely with special consideration for the dangerous potential of the product. Typically, the safest position is uphill and upwind.
- Establish a control zone (Hot Zone) beyond which entry is restricted.
- Designate a staging area for incoming apparatus, and assign a staging officer.
- Execute immediate life-saving rescue, limiting as much as possible, the endangerment of the health and safety of personnel until the material involved and hazards are identified.
- Identify the product and obtain supplementary information.
- Westmoreland 911 will be notified of situation and Team 800 will be activated if necessary.
