8/29-30 - SVC Challenge

The Lady Bearcats opened the 2008 campaign with a pair of victories over Carlow University and Pitt-Bradford in the opening day of the SVC Bearcat Challenge.  Scores against Carlow were 25-16, 25-17, 22-25, and 25-18. 

Diana Petrovich led the way in the opener for SVC, tallying 13 kills, while Anna Wasik had five blocks.  Taylor Guido recorded 11 digs in her SVC debut, while Christa Calgaro notched 10 digs.  Kelsie Bumbarger, also making her freshman debut, had 37 assists and five aces at the setter spot.  

Againt Pitt-Bradford, SVC won the first game, 25-16, before falling in game two, 22-25.  The Lady Bearcats then swept the next two games by identical 25-16 scores. 

It was a balanced effort offensively for the Lady Bearcats, as Guido, Petrovich, and Lauren Paddick all had nine kills.  Rachel Pace blocked eight shots, while Guido also added 17 digs.

The team wrapped up the tournament on day two with a quick 3-0 win over Pitt-Greensburg.

The Lady Bearcats owned play throughout the match, winning by scores of 25-12, 25-9, and 25-10.

It was the second win of the day for SVC, as they picked up a 3-0 shutout over Dickinson in morning play.  Scores were 25-16, 25-21, 25-20.

Diana Petrovich and Lauren Paddick each recorded eight kills against Dickinson, while Taylor Guido added seven.  Anna Wasik posted 11 blocks and four aces, while Guido, Christa Calgaro, and Erin Perry led the way with 11 digs.

9/6 - Tri Match

The Lady Bearcats extended their season opening winning streak to six matches after defeating Houghton College and Franciscan University in a tri-match in the Carey Center.

In the day's opener, the Lady Bearcats defeated Houghton in a hard-fought five set match.  Scores were 24-26, 25-21, 22-25, 25-21, and 15-13.

Emily Petrovich led the way with 20 kills and 16 digs, while Taylor Guido posted 13 kills and 15 digs.  Lauren Paddick added 15 kills, Anna Wasik four aces, and Kelsie Bumbarger 19 digs and 58 assists.

In their second match, the Lady Bearcats made quick work of the Franciscan Barons, winning by scores of 25-8, 25-7, and 25-18.

Guido once again had 15 digs, while Bumbarger posted 33 assists and Christa Calgaro and Wasik both recording three aces.  In a balanced offensive effort, Petrovich and Guido each put down seven kills, while Paddick had six.

9/12-13 - Gettysburg

The Lady Bearcats went 1-1 in the opening day of a tournament hosted by Gettysburg College.

In the day's first match, SVC defeated Carnegie Mellon in four games, while the Lady Bearcats dropped in three sets to the Daemen Wildcats in the nightcap.

Against Carnegie Mellon, the Lady Bearcats won by scores of 25-19, 25-19, 21-25, and 25-14.  Diana Petrovich recorded 13 kills and four aces, while Taylor Guido notched 17 digs.  Anna Wasik contributed nine kills, while committing just one error, and setter Kelsie Bumbarger racked up 31 assists to go with 11 digs.

In the loss to SVC's former NAIA foe Daemen, the Lady Bearcats fell by the close scores of 22-25, 24-26, and 24-26. Guido enjoyed a strong game, with six kills and 11 digs.  Petrovich posted 10 digs, six kills and six blocks, Wasik seven blocks, and Bumbarger 11 digs.

The Gettysburg College Bullets defeated the Lady Bearcats by a 3-0 score on the final day of the Gettysburg Blast Tournament.  Scores were 19-25, 21-25, and 22-25.

Taylor Guido and Lauren Paddick played strong in the losing effort, posting eight and six kills, respectively.

9/16 - Grove City

The Lady Bearcats opened their Presidents' Athletic Conference schedule with a 3-1 victory over Grove City on the road.

Saint Vincent won the first game 25-20, but the Wolverines fought back to post a 25-21 win in game two.  The Lady Bearcats then regrouped and won the next two games by identical 25-21 scores to win the match.

Offensively, SVC was led by Diana Petrovich, who had 16 kills.  Lauren Paddick and Taylor Guido added 14 each.  Anna Wasik had 10 kills and only one error in 17 attempts.  Paddick and Petrovich also added four blocks each.

The defense was led by Kelsie Bumbarger, who had 18 digs. Guido added 12.

9/20 - Geneva/Thiel

The Lady Bearcats split a Presidents' Athletic Conference tri-match, defeating Thiel 3-1 before dropping a 3-0 contest to Geneva.

Against Thiel, SVC won by scores of 26-24, 17-25, 25-19, and 25-13.

Diana Petrovich led the way in the win with 13 kills, while Lauren Paddick added nine.  Christa Calgaro led both sides with 19 digs, while Kelsie Bumbarger posed 33 assists.

Geneva defeated the Lady Bearcats by scores of 24-26, 23-25, and 20-25.  Petrovich again led the team with eight kills, while Paddick and Taylor Guido each had seven.  Guido also added 24 digs in the defeat.

9/23 - CMU

The Lady Bearcats lost to Carnegie Mellon University on the road by a score of 3-0.  Scores were 25-20, 25-20 and 25-21. 

Diana Petrovich and Lauren Paddick each recorded 9 kills, while Christa Calgaro had 14 digs.  Kelsie Bumbarger recorded 35 assists.

9/25 - Mt. Aloysius

The Lady Bearcats returned to form with a sweep of Mount Aloysius College on the road.  Scores were 25-13, 25-13 and 25-15.

Diana Petrovich had 10 kills and 6 blocks, while Lauren Paddick had 13 kills.  Rachel Pace had 5 kills in 5 attempts.  Setter Kelsie Bumbarger had 31 assists on the evening.

9/27 - Thomas More / Westminster

The Lady Bearcats went the distance in a pair of matches at the Carey Center, defeating Presidents' Athletic Conference foes Thomas More and Westminster by 3-2 scores.

In the opener, SVC started strong against Thomas More, which entered the day winners of 11 of their last 12.  The Lady Bearcats won the first two sets 25-23 and 26-24, and looked to be in control of the third game, taking a 21-16 lead.

The Saints stormed back, however, winning the third game 26-24 and taking the fourth by a 25-22 score.  Thomas More looked to cash in on the momentum, taking an early 5-1 lead in the fifth and deciding set, before the Lady Bearcats went on a tear, ending on a 14-8 run to win 15-13.

In the nightcap with Westminster, the Lady Bearcats were sluggish off the bat, losing the first game 25-9.  SVC rebounded, winning the second game 25-22 and taking the third 25-20.  The Titans then came back to win game four, 25-15, but SVC closed it out in the fifth with a 15-11 win.

Lauren Paddick had 14 kills in the win over Westminster, while Diana Petrovich added nine.  Christa Calgaro and Kelsie Bumbarger each contributed 18 digs, while Taylor Guido notched seven kills and 10 digs.

9/30 - W&J

After dropping the first game, Saint Vincent came back to win three straight and defeat visiting Washington & Jefferson College.

W&J came out strong, posting a 25-22 win in the opening game.  SVC came right back and won the second game, 25-13.  Despite the lopsided win, W&J wasn't finished, but SVC won the next two games, 25-21 and 25-22, with Lauren Paddick scoring the final kill.

Paddick and Diana Petrovich led the offense with 11 kills each.  Anna Wasik had four aces and 6 kills, while Taylor Guido contributed 9 kills and 13 digs.  Christa Calgaro recorded 14 digs, while Kelsie Bumbarger had 11 digs and 38 assists.

10/2 - Juniata

The Juniata College Eagles, ranked number one in the country, defeated the Lady Bearcats 3-0 in the Robert S. Carey Student Center.  Scores were 25-7, 25-10, and 27-25.

In the night's first set, Juniata had the momentum from the start, jumping out to a 12-3 lead and never looking back.  In game two, the Lady Bearcats took leads of 1-0 and 3-2, but once again, Juniata proved too much to handle, pulling away down the stretch.

The third game of the night, however, proved to be a see-saw thriller.

After spotting the Eagles a 1-0 lead, the Lady Bearcats eventually tied it at three.  Then, SVC mounted a furious rally.  A pair of kills from Anna Wasik put SVC up 8-3, and then a Wasik block forced a Juiata error, giving the Lady Bearcats their largest lead of the game at 10-4.

The teams then traded points, but Juniata went on a rally of its own, tying the set at 15.

Kills by Wasik and Taylor Guido once again gave SVC a two point lead, at 19-17, and a Juniata error later pushed the Lady Bearcat advantage to 23-19.

The Golden Eagles managed to force ties of 23-23 and 24-24, but a Lauren Paddick spike pulled SVC to within one point of the set at 25-24.

Once again, however, Juniata rose to the challenge, and was able to score the final three points of the set, ending the match with the 27-25 victory.

Wasik led the Lady Bearcats with six kills on the night, while Guido and Paddick each posted five.  Guido also added 10 digs, as did Christa Calgaro.   While SVC only tallied a pair of service aces (one each from Diana Petrovich and Kelsie Bumbarger), the Lady Bearcats made just one error in 16 serves for the match.

10/4 - Bethany/Waynesburg

The Lady Bearcats returned to winning ways, picking up two victories at a Presidents' Athletic Conference triangular hosted by Bethany College.

Both of SVC's wins - over Bethany and Waynesburg - came by 3-0 scores.  The Lady defeated Bethany College by scores of 25-12, 25-21 and 25-19, while SVC won over Waynesburg 25-20, 25-11, and 25-21.

In the Bethany contest, Taylor Guido and Diana Petrovich each posted seven kills for SVC, while Anna Wasik had six.  Guido added 12 digs, with Wasik leading the way with four blocks.  Setter Kelsie Bumbarger had 25 assists and four service aces.

Against Waynesburg, Petrovich again led the way with 13 kills, while Lauren Paddick and Wasik added 10 apiece.  Wasik also notched four blocks, while Christa Calgaro led both sided with 25 digs.  Bumbarger tallied 25 assists.

10/8 - W&J

Washington & Jefferson College avenged a recent loss at Saint Vincent by defeating the Lady Bearcats by a score of 3-1.

Host W&J won the first two games, 25-15 and 25-23, before SVC came back to win game three by a score of 25-17.  W&J won game four by a score of 25-17 for the match victory.

Lauren Paddick led the Lady Bearcats with 10 kills, while Anna Wasik added 9 kills and four blocks.  Diana Petrovich also had 9 kills.  Rachel Pace added four blocks, and Christa Calgaro tallied 15 digs.

10/12 - Thomas More

The Lady Bearcats were defeated in five sets by Thomas More College in Crestview Hills, KY.

After falling 25-22 in each of the first two sets, the Lady Bearcats stormed back, winning the third set 25-22 and the fourth set 25-19.

In the deciding fifth set, SVC jumped out to leads of 8-3 and 10-6, but Thomas More ended on a tear to win the set 15-11 and the match 3-2.

A trio of Lady Bearcats reached double figures in kills, including Diana Petrovich (17), Taylor Guido (14), and Dawn Timko (10).

Kelsie Bumbarger led all players with 36 digs, while she added 20 assists.  Christa Calgaro contributed 27 digs and Guido 26.

10/14 - Grove City

The Lady Bearcats snapped a two-match losing streak, as they defeated visiting Grove City by a 3-0 count in the Robert S. Carey Center. Scores of the games were 25-16, 25-16, 25-17.

It was a balanced team effort for the Lady Bearcats, as six players recorded at least one kill, and 10 different Lady Bearcats picking up at least one dig, including five with at least five digs.


Diana Petrovich led the Lady Bearcat offense with 12 kills, while Dawn Timko added 10 and Taylor Guido nine. Christa Calgaro led the way with 17 digs, with Guido adding 15, Kelsie Bumbarger 10, and Briana Butterworth eight. Bumbarger also dished out 32 assists and recorded a pair of service aces.

10/18 - Allegheny/Kenyon

The Lady Bearcats picked up a pair of wins at a tri-match hosted by Allegheny College, as SVC defeated the host Gators as well as Kenyon College by identical 3-0 scores.

Against Kenyon, the Lady Bearcats won by scores of 25-22 25-13, and 25-15.  Diana Petrovich led both sices with 18 kills, while Dawn Timko added eight.  Christa Calgaro posted 11 digs and Taylor Guido 10, while Kelsie Bumbarger dished out 34 assists. 

SVC defeated Allegheny 25-15, 25-23, and 25-20.  Petrovich again led the Lady Bearcat offense with 11 kills, with Guido adding seven.  Rachel Pace also contribued five kills on 12 attempts, while committing no errors. 

Anna Wasik led the Lady Bearcats with four blocks, while Guido, Bumbarger, Calgaro, and Brianna Butterworth each had 10 digs.  Bumbarger also added 31 assists. 

10/21 - Bethany

The Lady Bearcats defeated Bethany College by a score of 3-1 at home, completing a season sweep of the Bison.

Saint Vincent started strong, winning the first game by a score of 25-11.  The Lady Bearcats then opened the second game with a 5-0 lead before a timeout by Bethany that gave the visitors a chance to regroup.  The Bison outscored SVC 10-7 to cut the margin to 12-10, then scored six consecutive points to take a 16-12 lead, going on to win the second game, 25-18.

After the Lady Bearcats took a 7-2 lead early in game three, the Bison again came back strong, eventually tying the game at 17.  However, SVC scored 8 of the games final 9 points to seal a 25-18 victory.

Game four was all Saint Vincent, as the Lady Bearcats won 25-15 to secure the match win and improve to 19-7 on the season. 

Christa Calgaro led the back line with 16 digs on the evening.  Briana Butterworth, Diana Petrovich, Kelsie Bumbarger and Calgaro each had two aces.  On the front line, Petrovich had 13 kills, followed by Anna Wasik (12) and Taylor Guido (11).  Wasik had six blocks on the night.

10/23 - Waynesburg

After dropping the first two sets of the night, the Lady Bearcats stormed back to pick up the 3-2 road win over the Waynesburg Yellow Jackets on Dig for a Cure night.

SVC dropped the first two sets by scores of 21-25 and 22-25, before rattling off wins of 25-20, 25-16, and 15-13 to seal the win.

Anna Wasik led the Lady Bearcat offense with 16 kills, while Diana Petrovich added 13 and Dawn Timko 11.  Rachel Pace also enjoyed a strong night on the front line, tallying five solo blocks.

Christa Calgaro posted 20 digs and Kelsie Bumbarger 19, while Bumbarger also dished out a career-high 51 assists.

The Lady Bearcats and Yellow Jackets participated in the "Dig for a Cure" campaign, supporting the fight for breast cancer.  All players wore pink t-shirts, while those in attendance made donations to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation, dedicated to advancing the research and prevention of breast cancer.

With the win, their fifth straight, the Lady Bearcats improve to 20-7 on the season.  It is the 11th time in program history, and the fourth year in a row, in which the team has won at least 20 matches.

10/25 - Westminster/Chatham

The Lady Bearcats picked up a pair of wins on the road, defeating both Chatham University and Westminster College.

SVC dominated Chatham, winning by scores of 25-3, 25-8 and 25-7.

The match against Westminster, however, went the full five games.  Westminster opened with a 25-19 win, but SVC won the second game by the same score.  Game three went back to Westminster, 25-14, but again the Lady Bearcats rebounded for a win in the next game, 25-22, before taking game five by a 15-9 margin.

Against Chatham, Taylor Guido had 8 kills and 6 digs.  Stephanie Huff had six assists, and Christa Calgaro recorded six digs and 5 aces.

In the Westminster match, Diana Petrovich posted 27 kills against just six errors.  Guido added 15 kills and 27 digs, while Kelsie Bumbarger had 49 assists and 18 digs.  Calgaro had 15 d digs.  Briana Butterworth had 3 service aces and 11 digs. 

10/30 - Thiel

The Lady Bearcats swept Thiel College on Senior Night in the Carey Center.

In game one, things went back and forth throughout, with the game tied three different times, the last of which at 16-16.  SVC then scored three straight points and never looked back, going on to win by a score of 25-21.

The Lady Bearcats started strong in game two, opening up an 8-1 lead.  After building the lead to 20-12, SVC later saw the lead cut to five, as Thiel closed to within 22-17, but SVC once again pulled away for a 25-18 victory.

Game three started in similar fashion, with the hosts building a 6-1 early margin.  This time, Thiel never recovered, and Saint Vincent went on to a 25-18 win and a three-game sweep.

Taylor Guido had 12 kills for SVC, while Diana Petrovich recorded 9 kills and 3 blocks.  Christa Calgaro had 25 digs, and Kelsie Bumbarger posted 30 assists.

Prior to the game, seniors Katie Chirdon, Lauren Paddick and Anna Wasik were honored as senior members of the team in their final home appearance.

11/1 - Chatham/Geneva

The Lady Bearcats wrapped up the 2008 regular season by sweeping a tri match at Geneva College, extending their winning streak to 10 matches.

In the day's opener, SVC avenged an early season loss to Geneva by defeating the Golden Tornadoes in four sets.  Scores were 25-16, 25-16, 30-32, and 25-22.

Diana Petrovich enjoyed a huge game, posting 24 kills and three blocks.

Dawn Timko and Taylor Guido each added seven kills, while Guido had16 digs and three blocks.

Kelsie Bumbarger led the SVC defense with 18 digs, while dishing out 45 assists, and teammate Christa Calgaro recorded 17 digs and tallied four service aces.

The Lady Bearcats then earned a season sweep over Chatham University, defeating the Cougars in three sets by scores of 25-12, 25-11, and 25-14.

Guido paced the SVC front line with eight kills, while Calgaro had 15 digs and Brianna Butterworth 13.  Stefani Huff notched a career-high 20 assists.
