Saint Vincent head volleyball coach Sue Hozak has announced that the Lady Bearcats will take part in the Dig for the Cure initiative, benefiting the Susan G. Komen Foundation. The 2009 Dig for the Cure night is scheduled for next Tuesday, Ocotber 27th, when the Lady Bearcats will play host to Waynesburg University. Both teams will wear pink t-shirts to show support for the fight against breast cancer, and fans are urged to wear pink for the evening, as well. Donations toward breast cancer research will be accepted through the night of the match, and will be collected at the door throughout the evening. Also, the Lady Bearcats are selling pink "Dig for the Cure" t-shirts for $10 apiece, and they can be ordered by contacting coach Hozak at (724) 805-2112, with all proceeds once again going toward the fight against breast cancer. This is the second season in which the Lady Bearcats will take part in the Dig for the Cure initiative, and first time it will be held at Saint Vincent, as the squad did so at Waynesburg in 2008. "Coach Benkowski is a Saint Vincent grad," said Hozak, "so we decided to switch off the locations each season between SVC and Waynesburg. They did a great job last season, raising over $1,200, and we'd love to be able to exceed that amount this year." The Dig for the Cure campaign was originally started in 2003 by Charlotte head coach Lisa Marston, whose mother was a breast cancer survivor, and has spread to volleyball programs across the country in recent years. Last year, the campaign raised over $300 thousand, from the 135 participating programs. The Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation was established in 1982 by Nancy Brinker to honor the memory of her sister, Susan G. Komen, who died from breast cancer at the age of 36. komen for the Cure is the world's largest grassroots network of breast cancer survivors and activists fighting to save lives, empower people, ensure quality care for all, and energice science to find a cure. Thanks to events like Dig for the Cure, the foundation has invested nearly $1 billion to fulfill the promise of becoming the world's largest source of nonprofit funds dedicated to the fight against breast cancer in the world.
