SVC Women's Cross Country

2006 Meet Recaps

9/2 - Fisher Invitational

The Lady Bearcats opened up the 2006 schedule on the right foot, taking the overall title at Westminster College's Fisher Invitational for the second straight year.

With a score of 44, Saint Vincent took the team title ahead of Alderson-Broaddus (67) and Gannon (76).

Rounding out the team scores were Seton Hill (152), Penn State-Behrend (161), Franciscan (176), Westminster (209) and Bethany (248).

Individually, the Lady Bearcats were led by Laura Magnuson, who finished in second place overall with a time of 19:46.  Tess Jones was the second Lady Bearcat to cross the finish line (5th overall), doing so in 19:53. Kara Shirley (19:58; 6th overall), Amanda Connell (20:30; 16th), and freshman Kelsey Sullivan (20:38; 17th) rounded out the top five Saint Vincent finishers.

"It was a real good performance," said SVC coach Tom Harbert, "especially considering the muddy conditions.  You couldn't ask for a better way to start the season."

Other schools participating in the event included Bethany, Franciscan, Hiram, Penn State-Behrend, Seton Hill, Pitt-Greensburg, Walsh, and the host team, Westminster.

9/9 - Cal Invitational

For the second consecutive week, the Lady Bearcats took first place as a team, capturing the title at the California (PA) University Invitational.

Saint Vincent finished in first place with 21 points, followed by Mercyhurst (42), Cal (93), Westminster (102), and Point Park (164).

It was a dominant performance for coach Tom Harbert's Lady Bearcats, as Saint Vincent runners took five of the first seven places, and seven of the top 13.

Laura Magnuson was the top individual finisher for SVC, crossing the finish line in 20:40, being edged out for first place overall by what Harbert described as "maybe the length of her shoe."

Saint Vincent's Tess Jones took third overall, with a time of 20:45, while teammates Kara Shirley finished fourth (20:50), Amanda Connell fifth (21:07), and Kelsey Sullivan seventh (21:30).

The Lady Bearcats' Rachel Gregory finished 11th overall, crossing the line in 22:33, while Laura Ziegenfus finished with a 22:30, good for 13th place.

"We kept a nice, tight pack the entire time," said Harbert, "and they finished strong."

9/15 - Notre Dame Catholic Invitational

The Lady Bearcats looked to build upon their strong start of the 2006 season, traveling to South Bend, IN to participate in the National Catholic Invitational, hosted by Notre Dame (IN).

Coach Tom Harbert's squad finished 10th out of 34 teams (including NCAA Division-I competition), and fourth out of 19 squads in the small college division, despite the absence of one of its best runners in junior Tess Jones.

Leading the way for the Lady Bearcats was Kara Shirley, who finished in 52nd overall (all divisions) and 12th out of 170 in the small college division with a time of 20:05.

Kelsey Sullivan was the second SVC runner to cross the finish line, doing so in 20:09.  Laura Magnuson turned in a 20:14, Amanda Connell 20:55, and Rachel Gregory 21:53.  Each of the five finished within the top 50 in the small college division.

In that division, Bellarmine College took first as a team with a score of 110, followed by Loras (129), John Carroll (130), SVC (169), and St. Xavier (213).

10/7 - Dickinson Invitational

The Lady Bearcats traveled to central Pennsylvania to compete in the always competitive Dickinson College Invitational.

Two races were run, a 6k and a 4k, and the Lady Bearcats finished a combined eighth out of 27 teams.

In the short race, freshman Rachel Gregory led the way for the Lady Bearcats, finishing in 17:06, good for 68th place out of 162 runners.  Another freshman, Kathy Stodola, was the second SVC runner to cross the line, doing so in 17:10 and 71st place.  Rachel Karpency (17:14/76th place), Kristy Hartbauer (17:22/84th), and Kelly Cunningham (17:31/88th) round out the top finishers for the Lady Bearcats.

In the 6k race, SVC finished in sixth place as a team, despite being without the services of its top two runners in Laura Magnuson and Tess Jones.

Kara Shirley paced all Lady Bearcat finishers, completing the course in 24:21, good for 28th place out of 140 runners. Kelsey Sullivan finished three spots behind Shirley with a 24:26, while Amanda Connell placed 37th (24:33) and Lauren Ziegenfus 72nd.

"I thought we did very well today," said Lady Bearcat coach Tom Harbert.  "It was a very, very tight pack the whole way through, and our top three runners finished 12 seconds apart.  You can't get much closer than that.

10/14 - Gettysburg Invitational

The Lady Bearcats, led by senior Kara Shirley, finished 7th among 20 teams in the Gettysburg Invitational.

Shirley finished 14th overall, timed in 23:45 in the 6K race.  Tess Jones also posted a solid finish, coming in 19th among 191 runners, timed in 24:01.

The University of Saint Thomas won the event, followed by Johns Hopkins, Loyola, Washington & Lee, Gettysburg, Mary Washington, and SVC.

10/28 - PAC Championships

The Bearcat women finished second in the Invitational portion of the PAC Conference Meet, held at the Greene County Airport in Waynesburg, PA.

The women’s cross country team scored 58 points, second to Geneva (32).  Grove City, Waynesburg, Westminster, Bethany, Thomas More (incomplete team) and Washington & Jefferson (inc) rounded out the scoring.

Kara Shirley finished second overall in the 6K race, timed in 24:29.  Tess Jones and Laura Magnuson, who returned to action after missing several meets due to an injury, also earned Coaches Awards by finishing in the top 14.  The top SVC runners were:

Kara Shirley (2nd overall, 24:29)
Tess Jones (8th, 25:01)
Laura Magnuson (13th, 25:55)

Amanda Connell (18th, 26:11)
Lauren Ziegenfus (28th, 27:14)
