SVC Women's Cross Country

11/6: AMC/NAIA Region IX Championship report

The Saint Vincent men's team finished fourth in the NAIA Regional Championship and National Qualifier, earning an at-large berth into the National Championships.

TJ Black finished sixth overall and earned First Team All-American Mideast Conference honors.  Nate Sylvester was named to the Second Team and Matt Pajak garnered Honorable Mention status.

The women's team finished 7th overall.  Sarah Johnston set a new school record with a time of 19:40 on the SVC course.  Seton Hill University hosted the event but used the SVC course.

Johnston's effort earns her a trip to Louisville, Kentucky for the National Championship.

10/16: Bearcats perform well in Gettysburg

Saint Vincent College runners enjoyed a succesful trip to Gettysburg College for the Gettysburg Invitational on Saturday.

T.J. Black led the way with SVC's best-ever finish in the Gettysburg Invitational, posting a second place overall out of 180 runners with a time of 26:32 for the 8K distance and earning a medal.  The men's team, which finished 3rd overall out of 21 teams -- their highest team finish in several years of competition in the event -- also had two other award winners.  Nate Sylvester finished 21st overall, while Jake Hoone finished 25th. 

The men's team, coached by Andy Herr, finished behind only Elizabethtown College and Alderson-Broaddus. 

The Lady Bearcats' Sarah Johnston earned a medal in the women's 6K race, recording a time of 23:33 and finishing 9th overall.  Laura Magnuson was the second-fastest SVC runner, finishing 38th out of the 177 runners. 

Johnston's finish was the highest-ever for a Lady Bearcat in the Gettysburg Invitational.

Saint Vincent's women, under the guidance of Coach Tom Harbert, finished 8th of 21 teams.  Elizabethtown took the top spot.

10/9: Bearcats finish second in CMU Invitational

Coach Andy Herr's Saint Vincent Bearcat men finished second among 14 teams in the Carnegie Mellon University Invitational Cross Country meet.

TJ Black was tops among four Bearcat runners that earned medals for a top-25 finish.  Black's time of 26:45 for the 8K distance was good for fourth overall.  Nick Pajak (27:45, 19th overall), Nate Sylvester (27:50, 22nd), Nick Krause (27:51, 23rd) and Aaron Conway (28:23, 26th) rounded out the Bearcat top five.

The team finished second behind CMU (18 points) with a team score of 80. Juniata was third (102) followed by Grove City (135) and Penn State-Erie (136).

10/2: Johnston medals for women at Dickinson

Junior Sarah Johnston (Manassas, VA) continued her stellar season for the Lady Bearcats at the Dickinson Invitational on Saturday, placing 12th overall in the 6K race with a time of 24:08. 

The Lady Bearcats, under Coach Tom Harbert, finished in 11th out of 17 complete teams in the 6K.  Other top finishers for the women included Laura Manguson (25:32), Kara Shirley (27:03), Rachel Karpency (27:24), and Kelly Bridges (27:38). 

A second race, this one a 4K, was also ran on Saturday.  In this short course race, SVC finished 15th, and was led by Ashley Gornick who ran a 16:46.  Rounding out the top five were Christina Steve (17:54), Julie Kromer (18:13), Ashley Bower (18:17), and Tracy Avalos (18:19). 

Overall, combining the two races, Saint Vincent finished in 8th place, despite the absence of Amanda Connell and Elizabeth Lundquist, the team's number three and four runners respectively, due to injury.

The squad will next be in action on October 16th as they travel to the Gettysburg College Invitational.

9/25: Johnston leads SVC to victory, men compete in KY

Sarah Johnston (Manassas, VA) recorded one of the fastest times in Saint Vincent College history to lead the Lady Bearcats to victory in the Saint Vincent College Cross Country Invitational on Saturday.  Her time of 19:43 was 42 seconds better than the next competitor, SVC freshman Laura Magnuson (Greensburg/Hempfield HS). 

The Saint Vincent men, running without their usual top seven runners, finished second in the men's race, led by Nick Krause, who finished fourth overall.

TJ Black was SVC's top runner, finishing 29th.  Only three Bearcats finished in the top 100, and the team finished 17th of 41.

9/17: Teams compete in National Catholic Invitational at UND

The Saint Vincent Cross Country teams, under the direction of Tom Harbert, competed in the National Catholic Invitational at the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, IN on Friday afternoon.

The Bearcats and Lady Bearcats performed well against a field comprised of NCAA Division I, II and III along with NAIA runners.

Coach Andy Herr's SVC men finished 8th overall out of 30 teams.  When you remove the NCAA-I schools, Saint Vincent was 2nd out of 20 remaining teams in the Collegiate Division.

The top ten:  1. Notre Dame 19, 2. Gonzaga 106, 3. Xavier 139, 4. Dayton 156, 5. DePaul 176, 6. Loras 200, 7. Detroit-Mercy 239, 8. Saint Vincent 273, 9. Holy Cross 299, 10. St. Martin's 348.

TJ Black finished 19th overall of 231 runners with a 25:53 time for the 5 mile distance.  Other top runners for SVC were Jake Hoone (61st, 27:23), Wayne Hooper (63rd, 27:24), Matt Pajak (67th, 27:29), an Aaron Conway (76th, 27:38).

The Lady Bearcats finished 19th of 31 total schools, 12th of 21 in the Collegiate Division for Coach Harbert.  Sarah Johnston was the fastest SVC runner (57th overall) with a time of 19:58 for the 5K distance.  Laura Magnuson (20:14), Amanda Connell (20:56), Kara Shirley (21:34) and Rachel Karpency (21:40) rounded out the top five.  SVC lost #3 runner Elizabeth Lundquist at the two-mile mark due to injury.

9/11: Bearcat men remain undefeated, women finish 4th

The Saint Vincent College men's cross country team, coached by Andy Herr, captured first place for the second time in as many compeitions this season with a strong finish at the California University of Pennsylvania Cross Country Invitational meet.  Once again first place overall honors went to senior standout TJ Black, who completed the 5 mile course in 26:31.  Also receiving individual awards by placing in the top 25 finishers were:  5th - Matt Pajak 27:45, 6th- Jake Hoone 27:47, 7th- Nathan Sylvester 27:54, 10th - Carl Isenberg 28:12, 15th - Nick Krause  28:27,21st - Albert Oduho 28:57, and Aaron Conway finishing 22ndwith 29:00.

Coach Tom Harbert's Lady Bearcat cross country team fiinished 4th overall and had three women receiving top 25 honors.   Top runner for the Bearcats and placing6th overall was junior Sarah Johnston with a time of 20:02 over the 3.1 mile course. Freshman Laura Magnuson finished strong at 16thin 20:58 while junior Elizabeth Lundquist came in 17thwith a 21:04.

9/4: Black, SVC off to fast start

 

The Saint Vincent Bearcats and Lady Bearcats opened the 2004 Cross Country season in Greensburg at the Seton Hill University Invitational.

TJ Black set a new course record in winning the men's event, covering five miles in 26:48 and leading the Bearcat men to victory in the 9-team event.

Black, a NAIA National Qualifier in 2003, was one of five SVC runners to medal in the top 15.  Matt Pajak finished fourth, followed by Jake Hoone (5th), Nate Sylvester (6th) and freshman Wayne Hooper, who finished 7th overall in his first collegiate meet.

The team's score of 23 was by far the best in the field.  Walsh University (68) and Geneva (77) rounded out the top three, ahead of Notre Dame College, Seton Hill, Pitt-Greensburg, Point Park, Myers and Daemen.

The Saint Vincent women's team finished fourth among 10 teams in their event, lead by junior Sarah Johnston, who finished third overall with a 20:29 time for 3.1 miles.  Laura Magnuson, a freshman from Greensburg/Hempfield HS, medalled in her first meet, finishing 10th.

Geneva won the women's team event with a score of 42.  Walsh (69), Seton Hill (73) and Saint Vincent (76) were in close competition for second through fourth, respectively.  They were followed by Daemen, Pitt-Johnstown, Notre Dame, Ursuline, Point Park and Pitt-Greensburg.
