What Can I Expect to Happen in a Counseling Session?

The first appointment is a chance for the counselor and student to explore the student’s concerns and evaluate the situation and options. The student will be asked what concerns he/she wants to address. It may be necessry for the counselor to ask clarifying questions about the situation or the student’s background in order to make the appropriate recommendations. The student is always in control of what information he/she chooses to disclose. After the first session, the counselor and the student will then decide if any further services are necessary, and if so, what form they will take. Standards of confidentiality are maintained at all times.

Counseling Services strictly observe the principles of confidentiality both as dictated by the ethical standards of the profession and by the statutes of the State of Pennsylvania. The primary responsibility of Counseling Services is to the client. Thus, our policy is that no information, verbal or written, will be released without specific permission of the student, EXCEPT when the student is considered to be in danger of harming him/herself, harming another, or is unable to care for him/herself. In all other cases when confidential information is disclosed to persons outside Counseling Services, the client must agree to the disclosure and sign a Release of Information Form. Counseling files are NOT part of academic redords, and no one has access to them except the staff of counseling services. Complete records are maintained for 5 years.
