What can I expect to happen when I seek counseling services from the Wellness Center?

The SVC Counselors provide a supportive atmosphere for students to explore a range of issues with a caring and knowledgeable professional. You do not need to be in a crisis situation to benefit from counseling. Counseling can be an opportunity for self- exploration and personal growth, as well as a chance to receive the perspective of an objective listener. There are also times when life presents particular challenges and a counselor can help you to clarify the issues with which you are dealing. The counseling process allows an individual to discover the resources that they have to cope and develop a plan to manage current life challenges.

What happens in the first appointment?

The first appointment is a chance for the counselor and student to explore the student's concerns, and evaluate the situation and options. The counselor and the student will then decide if any further services are necessary and if so, what form they will take. Students may follow-up with additional individual counseling in the SVC Wellness Center. Students may also be referred to an off-campus agency for evaluation, testing or other specialized services.
