SVC Field Hockey
8/31 & 9/1 - VA trip

The Lady Bearcats opened the season with a tough defeat, falling on the road 2-1 to Virginia's Sweet Briar College.

A goal by SVC's Mary Ellen Baverso, assisted by Rachel Hill, gave the Lady Bearcats a quick 1-0 lead nine minutes into the first half.  Sweet Briar quickly tied it up, and the game was knotted at one at halftime.

Neither team could find the scoreboard in the second half, so the game went to a seven-on-seven sudden death overtime, with Sweet Briar's scoring the decisive goal with three minutes to go in the extra sesson.  Melissa Carron scored both tallies for the host Vixens on the afternoon.

On Saturday afternoon, Lynchburg College defeated SVC by a score of 8-0.

9/4 - Frostburg State

The Lady Bearcats couldn't overcome a pair of first half goals, dropping a 2-0 decision to visiting Frostburg State.

In the first half, Frostburg St. controlled the ball for much of the time, peppering the Lady Bearcat defense.  Brooke Tapman scored their first goal with just over 10 minutes remaining, off of their fourth corner of the afternoon.

Following the goal, the Lady Bearcats looked to push deep into Frostburg St. territory, but Frostburg State's Kelly Filipowicz intercepted a pass and went the length of the field to score on a breakaway just 45 seconds later to give the visitors a 2-0 lead.

Following half time, Saint Vincent controlled much of the action, but were unable to penetrate the Frostburg State defense.  The Lady Bearcat defense, led by goalie Jackie Novak, who made 10 saves on the day, held strong in the second frame, but SVC was unable to find the scoreboard.

Frostburg State outshot the Lady Bearcats 12-7, and had 20 corners as opposed to Saint Vincent's one.

9/8 - Rhodes

The Lady Bearcats played well, but lost to Rhodes College by a score of 2-0 in a game played in Louisville, Kentucky.

The teams played evenly throughout much of the first half, but Rhodes broke a scoreless tie near the halftime break.  Rhodes scored once again early in the second half before SVC rebounded to keep things even the rest of the way.

9/9 - Transylvania

The Lady Bearcats played well but suffered a tough loss on the road to Transylvania, 2-1 in double overtime.

Transylvania drew first blood, scoring at the 28:20 mark of the first half of a corner.

Just over 24 minutes into the second half, SVC's Katie Tomagno took a corner from Rachel Hill and tied the game at 1-1.

In the second overtime, Transylvania scored off a rebound at the 11:18 mark to earn the victory.

9/15 - Ohio Wesleyan

Saint Vincent controlled play throughout much of the game, but was defeated by visiting Ohio Wesleyan by a 1-0 score.

In a defensive struggle with much of the action played around midfield, the two teams combined for just five shots on goal, while the Lady Bearcats owned a 6-5 advantage in corners.  However, Ohio Wesleyan's Diana Boryczewski was the only player to find the net, deflecting a pass from teammate Lilly Jianas through heavy traffic into the net with two minutes remaining in the first half.SVC responded well after the intermission, controlling the ball with short, precise passing, while the Lady Bearcat defense limited the Bishops to just three second half shots.

The hosts had their best opportunity to score with just over two minutes remaining in regulation, possessing the ball for an extended period of time in front of the Ohio Wesleyan net.  The Lady Bearcats applied pressure, but were unable to send a shot home, and were handed the loss.

9/16 - Nazareth

Despite a strong effort from their defense, the Lady Bearcats were defeated by visiting Nazareth College by a 1-0 score.

Nazareth's offense applied pressure throughout the contest, outshooting SVC by a 24-4 margin, while taking 15 penalty corners compared to seven by the Lady Bearcats.

The SVC defense withstood the Nazareth attack throughout, until a scrum in front of the net that ended with Nazareth's Kristen McIntyre sending home a pass from Kelly Miranda with just over 10 minutes left in the second half.

Saint Vincent goalie Jackie Novak enjoyed a stellar day in the net, making 16 saves.

The Lady Bearcats had their best shot of getting on the board midway through the first half, taking two corners within moments and throwing a number of shots toward the goal.  Unfortunately, none found the back of the net, and the scoreless tie remained in tact.

9/23 - Wells

The Lady Bearcats earned their first win of the year, defeating Wells College by a score of 1-0.

Lauren Scheloske scored SVC's winning goal, assisted by Maryellen Baverso.  Jaqueline Novak earned the shutout in goal.

9/27 - Wilson

The Lady Bearcats extended their win streak to two with a shutout on the road over Wilson College.  The final score was 1-0.

Maryellen Baverso scored the SVC goal with an assists from Rachel Hill.  The SVC defense, led by goalie Jaqueline Novak, played well, thwarting 19 penalty corners by Wilson.

9/29 - Kean

Kean University defeated the Lady Bearcats by a score of 2-0 on Homecoming Day.

The visiting Cougars came out quickly, scoring the game's first goal just 1:24 into play, when Stephanie Cirino blasted home a corner sent in by Alli Green.

The SVC defense then clamped down, thwarting eight more corners in the first half.  Goalie Jackie Novak made nine saves before the intermission.

Kean began the second half in the same fashion as the first, with Green scoring off of another corner to put the Cougars up 2-0 three minutes into the game's final frame.

SVC one again responded well, seizing the momentum for much of the remainder of the contest.  The Lady Bearcats also had a number of scoring chances, the best of which coming with 18 minutes left.  Kean goalie Jennie Barry made an initial save on a Katie Tamagno shot, with the rebound coming finding the stick of Maryellen Baverso right on the doorstep.  Baverso's shot sailed just wide, however, and the Cougars were able to preserve the shut out.

The SVC defense held the Cougars to just five shots in the second half, and thwarted 18 of 20 Kean corners for the day.

Novak ended the day making 14 saves, as Kean managed 16 shots on goal as opposed to four by the Lady Bearcats.

10/7 - Ramapo

The Lady Bearcats were able to jump out to a quick 2-0 lead, but visiting Ramapo rallied in the second half to drop SVC 4-3.

Just five minutes into the opening frame, SVC's Maryellen Baverso gave the Lady Bearcats a quick 1-0 lead with a goal after a scramble in front of the net.

Momentum stayed in favor of the hosts, as freshman Samantha Larkin scored SVC's second goal of the day in similar fashion as Baverso in the game's 20th minute.

Ramapo then regrouped, and got on the scoreboard with two minutes left in the second half.

The visitors came out of the intermission on fire, controlling the ball for the majority of the half.  Ramapo scored three times in a 10 minute span to go ahead 4-2.

The SVC defense played well, as Ramapo had 26 penalty corners- 18 in the second half- but failed to convert any into goals.

A goal by Kelly Naugle with six minutes left brought the Lady Bearcats to within one, but they were unable to get any closer.

Saint Vincent goalie Jackie Novak made 10 saves in a losing effort, as Ramapo out-shot SVC 21-6 for the game.

10/10 - W&J

The Lady Bearcats were handed a 3-0 road defeat by Washington & Jefferson.

W&J scored twice in the first half and once again with seven minutes remaining for the victory.

Goalie Jackie Novak made three saves in the loss, as the Presidents had six shots on goal compared to SVC's two.

10/11 - Earlham

Visiting Earlham College handed the Lady Bearcats a rainy 1-0 defeat in Saint Vincent's final home game of the year.

In a defensive struggle played mostly around the midfield area, the teams combined for only seven shots on goal, with the only one that found the net being off the stick of Earlham's Liz Beuhler in the game's 20th minute following a Quaker penalty corner.

SVC had trouble getting much offense going, managing just three shots on goal and one lone penalty corner.

Earlham had 14 penalty corners, but managed only five shots on goal, with Lady Bearcat goalie Jackie Novak making four saves.

Prior to the game, SVC senior Lauren Jones was honored for playing in her final contest on the home turf.
