The Lady Bearcats regrouped from a 3-1 loss to Earlham College by defeating Wells College 2-1 on the Saint Vincent turf.

In the opener, Saint Vincent owned a 24-19 advantage in shots, but Earlham goalie Emma Treece was strong, recording 14 saves.

The Quakers got on the board first with just three minutes left in the first half, when Kate Birdsall picked up a loose ball at midfield and streaked to the goal untouched on the breakaway to give the visitors the 1-0 lead.

Birdsall's second goal of the game, 22 minutes into the second half, put Earlham up 2-0, but the Lady Bearcats answered right back, when Maryellen Baverso knocked in a loose ball on the doorstep for her first goal of the season, pulling SVC to within one.

The Lady Bearcats were unable to get any closer, as Birdsall recorded the hat trick on a nifty one-timer from Chrissy Sollenberger to end the afternoon's scoring in the game's 62nd minute.

While Treece had a big game in goal for Earlham, Lady Bearcat keeper Bridget Harner, in her collegiate debut, was also strong, making eight saves, including seven over the game's final 35 minutes.

In the nightcap, Baverso scored her second goal of the afternoon in the game's 25th minute, blasting home a loose ball in front to give the Lady Bearcats the 1-0 lead.

With just over two minutes left in the first half, SVC's Sam Larkin gave her team a 2-0 lead with her third goal of the season.

The hosts maintained the two-goal lead through the opening stages of the second half, but Wells increased its offensive pressure, and following a penalty corner, the Express' Stefanie Miller put her team on the board with just over 15 minutes left to play.

Wells continued to put pressure on the Lady Bearcats, but the SVC defense was strong over the final 15 minutes to earn the win.

For the game, the teams were deadlocked in shots at 7-7.  SVC goalie Jackie Novak earned the win, making a pair of saves.

The win evened the Lady Bearcats' record at 2-2.  The team will now have a week off before returning to action next Saturday at the two-day Bridgewater College tournament.
