Despite a strong effort from their defense, the Lady Bearcats were defeated by visiting Nazareth College by a 1-0 score. Nazareth's offense applied pressure throughout the contest, outshooting SVC by a 24-4 margin, while taking 15 penalty corners compared to seven by the Lady Bearcats.
The SVC defense withstood the Nazareth attack throughout, until a scrum in front of the net that ended with Nazareth's Kristen McIntyre sending home a pass from Kelly Miranda with just over 10 minutes left in the second half. Saint Vincent goalie Jackie Novak enjoyed a stellar day in the net, making 16 saves. The Lady Bearcats had their best shot of getting on the board midway through the first half, taking two corners within moments and throwing a number of shots toward the goal. Unfortunately, none found the back of the net, and the scoreless tie remained in tact. Although they have yet to record their first win on the year, SVC head coach Jym Walters remains optimistic about his team's prospects over the rest of the season. "The team has improved significantly from the beginning of the season," he said, "even with the close losses. We're looking forward to finishing the rest of the season strong. You can see there's a lot of potential."
The Lady Bearcats are back in action on Saturday, traveling to New Jersey to take on Morrisville State at 4pm.
