2005 Game Recaps

10/29 @ Seton Hill (Playoffs)

The Saint Vincent Lady Bearcats lost a heartbreaking game to Seton Hill by a score of 2-1 in a game decided by a shootout.

Both teams battled evenly in the first half, with Bearcat goalkeeper Jessica Urban coming up with key saves.  After 45 minutes, the game remained scoreless.

Early in the second half, a corner kick from SVC's Chris Basilone bounced around inside the box before Allie Lachat was able to put it past Griffin keeper Jaime Hickton to give SVC a 1-0 lead.

The Lady Bearcat defense tightened, and it appeared as though SVC was going to record the first post-season win in program history.  However, with 90 seconds remaining in regulation, SHU's Alicia Moulton scored to send the game into overtime.

After two 10-minute overtime periods, the game remained tied.

Both teams scored on their first two penalty kicks, but Hickton stopped two of Saint Vincent's next three shots, while the Griffins scored on all of their kicks to win the game.

SVC finishes the season at 11-7-1, a school record for most wins in a single season.

10/25 @ Seton Hill

The Lady Bearcats dropped their regular season finale 2-0 to crosstown and AMC rival Seton Hill on Tuesday afternoon.

In a game played through a steady squall of snow and rain, the Lady Bearcats were unable to muster any offense.  The Griffins got on the board midway through the first half, when Nicole Pergar knocked a ball from the top of the box through congestion into the lower left-hand corner of the net and past SVC keeper Abby Chabitnoy.

Pergar scored the game's final goal as well, scoring on a direct kick after being fouled on a breakaway by SVC's Adrianne Groth.

Facing a Griffin offense that came into the contest averaging nearly 5 goals per contest, the Lady Bearcat defenders played admirably, but SVC's offense was only able to muster one corner kick and just three shots on goal.

The game was originally scheduled to be a home contest for the Lady Bearcats, but the field at SVC was covered by three inches of snow and deemed unplayable and moved to Seton Hill's artificial surface.

10/23 @ Clarion

A program-record ten game win streak came to a halt in a 1-0 loss to Clarion University in a non-conference road game.

Abby Chabitnoy played well in the net and kept SVC in the game, but the offense, just one day after scoring 13 goals against Carlow, failed to score.

10/22 vs Carlow

The Saint Vincent Lady Bearcats extended their win streak to ten with a 13-1 victory over visiting Carlow University.  The win, the team's 11th of the year, established a new school record for victories in a season.

Kylie Simonini started the scoring less than five minutes into the game off a pass from Erin Mannella. Simonini then set up Adrianne Groth at the 38:58 mark.  Less than five minutes later, Groth added her second goal of the game.

With 26:09 left in the half, Mannella assisted on a goal by Michelle Teems to give SVC a 4-0 lead.  Six minutes later, Katie Messinger added another SVC goal.

Carlow cut the advantage to 5-1 off a direct kick goal by Jen Lober that went over the head of SVC keeper Abby Chabitnoy at the eight minute mark.

With just 12 seconds remaining in the first half, SVC's Allie Lachat increased the lead to 6-1. Simonini's second goal of the game started the scoring eight minutes into the second half.

With 26:53 left in the game, Nicole Mannella, who did not play in the first half, scored less than one minute after entering the game.  Forty-seven seconds later, Nicole Mannella assisted on Teems' second tally of the game.

Chris Basilone scored off a pass from Groth with 23:09 remaining, making the score 10-1.  Five minutes later, Cat Andrews recorded her first goal of the season to make it 11-1.  Simonini scored the hat trick off a header with 4:07 remaining, and Nicole Mannella later capped the scoring with her second of the half.  SVC outshot Carlow 23-1 for the game

10/19 vs Pitt-Greensburg

The Lady Bearcats overcame a slow start to defeat visiting Pitt-Greensburg 4-1 for their ninth consecutive win.

After a sluggish beginning to the match, the Lady Bearcats got on the board when Nicole Mannella intercepted a Bobcat clearing pass and found Adrienne Groth in the box, who sent a shot past UPG goalie Dana Huether for her fifth goal of the season at the 20:24 mark of the first half.

SVC wasted no time adding on, as Mannella scored her 11th goal of the season two minutes later off of a Chris Basilone assist.   Pitt-Greensburg's Amanda Kotvas pulled her team to within one, scoring off of a corner kick at the 15:25 mark, but the Lady Bearcats answered right back when Lindsay Baudoux knocked in a Mannella rebound to put SVC up 3-1 with 8:00 to go in the first frame.

SVC owned play in the second half, as well, and Mannella scored the game's final tally with 25:33 left in regulation.  On the day, the sophomore from Jeannette, PA had six points.

10/11 @ Notre Dame

The Saint Vincent defense, led by Ashley Shasko, Sara Lindsey, Cat Andrews and Katlyn Andyjohn, helped the Bearcats to a 2-0 victory on the road at Notre Dame College.

Nicole Mannella's goal off a corner kick from Adrianne Groth broke a scoreless tie in the second half.  Later, Kylie Simonini added an insurance goal to give the Bearcats the 2-0 win.  SVC outshot Notre Dame 15-2 as Abby Chabitnoy recorded her fifth shutout.

10/8 vs Roberts Wesleyan

The Lady Bearcats extended their win streak to seven games with a 4-0 shutout over Roberts Wesleyan College.

Kylie Simonini started the scoring just over 10 minutes into the game off a corner kick from Adrianne Groth. With 7:36 to go in the first half, freshman Jonya Strnisha scored her first collegiate goal off an assist from Nicole Mannella, and SVC took a 2-0 lead into the break.

Simonini added her second goal of the game with midway through the second half to make it 3-0.  Erin Mannella and Katie Messinger assisted.  With 15 minutes left, Nicole Mannella added a goal after a pass from her twin sister, Erin, to make it 4-0.

Teems scored with just under 20 minutes remaining in the first half off a pass from Chris Basilone.  Mannella also was credited with an assist on the play.

Fourteen minutes later, Mannella scored her first goal of the day off an assist from Basilone, and Saint Vincent took a 2-0 lead into the half.

Just over a minute into the second half, Kylie Simonini hit Mannella with a pass and Nicole made it 3-0 SVC.  Ten minutes later, the same combination teamed one more time to give the Lady Bearcats the 4-0 win.

Abby Chabitnoy recorded the shutout in the net for Saint Vincent, as the team moves to 4-1 in the American Mideast Conference North Division.  SVC is now 6-4-1 overall after posting their fifth straight win.  Geneva falls to 2-2 in the AMC, 4-7-1 overall.

9/27 vs. Ursuline

Freshman Kylie Simonini scored twice as the Lady Bearcats extended their win streak to four in a row, downing American Mideast Conference foe Ursuline College by a 3-0 score.

Simonini started the scoring in the 36th minute, assisted by Chris Basilone.  An unassisted blast from Erin Mannella made the score 2-0 at the half.

Midway through the second half, Simonini added her second goal, assisted by a header from Nicole Mannella.  Basilone, who started the play, also was credited with an assist.

Abby Chabitnoy recorded the shutout in the net, but faced only one shot on goal as the Lady Bearcat defense refused to let the Arrows have the ball.  SVC outshot Ursuline 23-1 on the day.

Abby Chabitnoy went the distance in the net, recording two saves.

9/19 vs. Urbana

The Lady Bearcats dominated play, outshooting the Urbana Blue Knights 25-4 and outscoring them 4-1.

Freshman Adrianne Groth opened the scoring up just two minutes into the game, and it was all Lady Bearcats after that. Freshman Kylie Simonini, who leads the Lady Bearcats in scoring on the season, scored midway through the first half, and then Erin Mannella drilled a shot over Blue Knight goal keeper Liz Markey from approximately 35 yards out.

After Abigail Nelson scored for Urbana early in the second half, Mannella closed out the scoring with her second tally of the afternoon. Katie Messinger and Christina Basilone each picked up two assists with Groth also adding a helper.

9/17 @ Point Park

The Lady Bearcats evened their American Mideast Conference record at 1-1 with a shutout against Point Park.  The final score was 4-0, as Saint Vincent outshot PPU by a 39-1 margin.

Kylie Simonini, Adrianne Groth, Michelle Teems and Erin Mannella scored for the Lady Bearcats. Mannella added a pair of assists.  Also recording assists were Groth, Teems, Jonya Strnisha and Chris Basilone.  Abby Chabitnoy recorded her first career shutout in the net for SVC (2-4-1 overall).

9/14 @ Mt Vernon Nazarene

The Lady Bearcats lost a close match on the road , falling to Mount Vernon Nazarene University by a 1-0 score.

According to Coach Keith Harmon, "We played well, but couldn't create much offense.  Our defense played a great game -- Cat Andrews, Katlyn Andyjohn, Ashley Shasko and Erin Mannella all played well.

Mannella, usually a midfielder, was forced to play the sweeper position for the first time due to injuries to other players.

9/7 @ Salem Int'l

The Lady Bearcats fell to 1-3-1 on the season with a loss on the road against Salem International University.

SVC outshot SIU by an 11-4 margin, but failed to put the ball in the net, as they played their first game without leading scorer Nicole Mannella, who is out with an ankle injury.

Abby Chabitnoy played well but took the loss in goal for SVC.  Jessica Urban played the second half and did not allow a goal.

9/3 @ Malone

The Lady Bearcats showed the effects of the double-overtime game against Walsh and dropped a 3-2 decision to Malone College on the road.

Nicole Mannella scored both Saint Vincent goals.  Kylie Simonini and Lindsay Baudoux assisted on the first, while Allie Lachat was credited with the assist on the latter goal.

Jessica Urban, who was injured earlier in the week, returned to action and suffered the loss in goal.

9/2 @ Walsh

Two overtimes weren't enough to decide a winner on Friday, as the Lady Bearcats tied the Walsh Cavaliers 2-2 on Friday afternoon.

Sophomore Nicole Mannella scored the game's first goal, and was assisted by classmate Allie Lachat.  The Lady Bearcat's second tally belonged to freshman Kylie Simonini, her second on the season.  Assists were credited to Erin Mannella and Jonya Strnisha.

Freshman goaltender Abby Chabitnoy, making her first career start, stopped three shots on the afternoon.  The Lady Bearcats outshot its opponents 14-5.

8/29 vs. D&E

The Lady Bearcats evened their record to 1-1 on Monday afternoon, defeating the visiting Davis and Elkins Senators 4-2 on a rain-soaked field.

SVC started off slow, allowing the game's first goal at the 21 minute mark, after a miscommunication between goaltender Jessica Urban and a fellow Lady Bearcat defender.  The two collided and Senator senior Adelina Abreu knocked the ball into an open net.  Urban was forced to leave the game after the collision, suffering a laceration to the face.  She was taken to the hospital for X-rays.

This seemed to wake up the home team, as less than a minute and a half later, sophomore midfielder Erin Mannella knocked a corner kick from Christina Basilone past Senator goalie Chelsea Gibson to tie the game.

The Bearcats stormed out of the gates to begin the second half.  Just under two minutes into the second frame, freshman midfielder Michelle Teems scored off of a cross from classmate Kylie Simonini.  Fellow freshman Adrienne Groth was also credited with an assist on the goal.

Two minutes later, the green and gold struck again, as Simonini emerged from a scrum in front of the net and soared a shot through a sea of red Senator jerseys and into the net to make it 3-1.

Abreu scored once again midway through the second half to make it 3-2, but the Bearcats answered right back when senior midfielder Lindsay Baudoux knocked a header in off of a perfect pass from Nicole Mannella to close out the scoring.

The victory could prove to be a costly one for the Bearcats, however, as in addition to Urban, freshman midfielder Sara Lindsey also sustained a head injury in the second half after falling to the ground hard while battling for the ball around midfield.  Her status for SVC's two games over the weekend is uncertain.

The Lady Bearcats also lost another key contributor when junior defender Katlyn Andyjohn was handed a red card after being involved in a skirmish with a Senator midfielder in the second half.  She will now be unavailable for SVC's game this Friday at Walsh.

8/27 @ Houghton

The Lady Bearcats started their 2005 campaign with a 4-1 loss to the Houghton Highlanders on the road in New York.

Houghton scored twice in the first 20 minutes and the Lady Bearcats were unable to recover. Sophomore Allie Lachat scored off a pass from freshman Michelle Teems to cut the margin to 2-1, but Houghton scored with just 12 seconds remaining in the first half to take a 3-1 lead into the break.

Saint Vincent played well in the second half, yielding just a penalty kick goal which ended the scoring at 4-1.
