SVC Soccer
9/1 - PSU Behrend

The Lady Bearcats fought to a 2-2, double overtime tie in the season opener against Penn State-Behrend.

Alex Shasko and Adrianne Groth scored for the Lady Bearcats (0-0-1), with Kylie Simonini assisting on both goals.

While the game officially goes into the books as a tie, the game was part of a tournament, so the game had to go to a shootout in order to see which team would move on to the championship game.

SVC's Jessica Urban made two key saves in the shootout, and the Lady Bearcats posted a 3-2 tally, with goals scored by Shasko, Groth and Katie Messinger.

9/2 - Baldwin-Wallace

The Lady Bearcats defeated Baldwin-Wallace 2-1 on a penalty kick by Alex Shasko five minutes into overtime to take the championship at a season-opening tournament hosted by Penn State-Behrend.

After a scoreless first half, SVC's Kylie Simonini scored the game's first goal eight minutes after the intermission, assisted by Shelly Teems.

As time wound down, Baldwin-Wallace's Whitney Zunic tied it up with less than six minutes remaining in the second half.  Neither team could manage a decisive goal in regulation, so for the second time in as many days, the Lady Bearcats went into overtime.

Five minutes into the extra session, Shasko was awarded a penalty kick and buried it into the back of the net for the game and tournament winner.  It was her second goal of the weekend, and for her efforts, the sophomore was named MVP of the tourney.

Jessica Urban played well in goal, making seven saves for the Lady Bearcats.

9/5 - Seton Hill

The Lady Bearcats were defeated 3-0 by crosstown rival Seton Hill University.

Nicole Pergar scored twice for Seton Hill, while Stephanie Zangrilli added a third tally- all in the first 45 minutes of play.

The Lady Bearcats had trouble manufacturing any offense on the day, as the Griffin defense limited SVC to a total of just six shots on goal.

9/8 - Dickinson

The Lady Bearcats struggled with high temperatures and a tough Dickinson team, losing 7-0 on the road in the first day of the Dickinson Tournament.

Dickinson outshot Saint Vincent 36-4 in the game and opened up a 4-0 lead by the half.

9/9 - DeSales

A much-improved Saint Vincent team tied DeSales in double overtime in the second day of the Dickinson College Tournament.  The final score was 2-2.

Alex Shasko scored both Saint Vincent goals, the first on a penalty kick, and the second off an assist from Katie Messinger.

9/12 - Pitt-Greensburg

Three early goals were all the Lady Bearcats needed in their 3-1 victory at the University of Pitt-Greensburg.

Junior Shelly Teems was the first to find the net for Saint Vincent, picking off a UPG defender's pass in front of the net and drilling it home to give the Lady Bearcats a 1-0 lead 17 minutes into play.

The Lady Bearcats got their second goal with a cross from Teems into the box deflecting off of junior Abby Chabitnoy to put SVC up 2-0.  For Chabitnoy, regularly a goalkeeper but forced into duty at forward, it was her first collegiate goal.

With seven minutes remaining in the opening stanza, junior Katie Messinger drilled home a Groth pass from 10 yards out to give the Lady Bearcats their third goal.

The hosts got on the scoreboard with 15 minutes left when Haley Gearhart drilled a perfectly-placed free kick into the top right corner of the net.  It was the only blemish for SVC keeper Jessica Urban, who recorded seven saves on the day

9/15 - Pitt-Bradford

Freshman Michelle Stepien scored her first two collegiate goals, helping SVC to a 4-0 win on the road against Pitt-Bradford.

Junior Shelly Teems also had a four-point day, posting a goal and two assists.

Adrianne Groth got the scoring started off an assist from Teems, then the two teamed again for SVC's second goal, this time with Teems scoring and Groth earning the assist.

Stepien's first goal was assisted by Kylie Simonini, then Teems aided Stepien on her second goal of the afternoon to secure the 4-0 win.

Jessica Urban picked up the shutout in goal for the Lady Bearcats (3-2-2).

9/22 - Franciscan

Michelle Stepien's second half goal broke a scoreless tie to give SVC a 1-0 win over visiting Franciscan University.

Both teams battled in the first half, keeping the ball away from the keepers for the first 45 minutes.  SVC posted just three shots in the first half compared to only four for Franciscan.

The game opened up in the second half, with each team tallying 13 shots.  SVC keeper Jessica Urban recorded 9 saves on the day, including 7 in the second half.

In the 69th minute, defender Anna Wagenhofer sent a ball from the midfield which reached Stepien, and her shot reached the back of the net to give SVC the lead and ultimately the win.

9/26 - Messiah

The visiting Lady Bearcats held Messiah College, ranked third in the country, scoreless for nearly 30 minutes, but the hosts then erupted in a big way, defeating SVC 11-0.

9/29 - Westminster

The Lady Bearcats were shut out on the road by Westminster College.  The final score was 2-0.

The Titans opened the scoring 13 minutes into the game, with Kristen Martin scoring off a Christina Adams assist.

Saint Vincent, which was forced to dress just 13 players due to injury, played tough throughout.  The Lady Bearcat defense continually thwarted a number of Westminster scoring opportunities, as SVC was out-shot 23-6 for the contest.

The score remained 1-0 until the game's waning moments, when Westminster's Mallory Bugel scored the insurance goal with just over three minutes left in regulation.

Senior goalie Jessica Urban made 13 saves in a losing effort for SVC, including eight in the second half.

With their second straight defeat, the Lady Bearcat record falls to 4-4-2.  Westminster, the 2006 Presidents' Athletic Conference champion, improves to 6-2-1 on the year.

10/3 - W&J

Thanks to an early second half goal from Kylie Simonini, the Lady Bearcats defeated visiting Washington & Jefferson 1-0.

Saint Vincent came out strong early on, with a number of scoring opportunities in the first half, as the Lady Bearcats had six shots on goal before the game was 15 minutes old.  W&J goalie Jackie Foltz was up to the task, stopping each one and preserving the tie.

The SVC defense was effective, and goalie Jessica Urban stopped all four shots she faced in the first half.

Shortly after the intermission, the Lady Bearcats got on the scoreboard, with Simonini scoring her second goal of the season off of an assist from Alex Shasko in the game's 50th minute.

The Presidents stormed back, working hard to control the play over the final 35 minutes, managing 17 shots.  The Lady Bearcat defense proved up to the task, blocking a number of them from within 25 yards and limiting the visitors to just three shots on goal in the final period.

Saint Vincent also did an effective job of controlling the ball at midfield, limiting the W&J breakouts and preserving the shut out.

Urban ended the contest with the shut out, saving seven shots, while Foltz posted an impressive 11 stops.

10/5 - Grove City

Grove City College remained undefeated, downing the Lady Bearcats by a score of 3-0.

The host Wolverines were granted a penalty kick just 39 seconds into the game, and the resulting Emily Ostlund goal proved to be all that they would need.   Ostlund added a second goal seven minutes later, and Jess Andrew scored in the 40th minute.  SVC settled down in the second half, as both teams stayed off the board.

10/10 - Geneva

Saint Vincent's Kylie Simonini scored two goals and added an assist, while the Lady Bearcats played smothering defense, in a 3-0 home win over Geneva College.

SVC struck early, when Simonini scored her first goal of the afternoon, and fourth of the season, off of an assist from Adrianne Groth just five minutes into play.

Ten minutes later, Ashley Bartko found Simonini on a long pass from midfield, and the junior converted the breakaway with a shot into the lower right of the net for her second score of the day.

In the game's 24th minute, Groth got a quick pass from Simonini from 12 feet out and found the net for SVC's third and final goal of the game.

The Lady Bearcats owned play for most of the contest, managing 34 shots, including 11 on goal.  The Lady Bearcat defense was just as dominating, allowing just four shots on goal, all stopped by senior keeper Jessica Urban.

10/14 - Thomas More

Thanks to two early goals and a stifling defense, the Lady Bearcats defeated Thomas More 2-1.

Thomas More outshot the Lady Bearcats 31-14, but SVC's defense shut down the Saint offense, with Jessica Urban recording 12 saves in goal.

The Lady Bearcats were on the defense in the early going, as the Saints posted three shots on goal, all stopped by Urban, in the first four minutes.

SVC then seized the momentum.  After an SVC corner, Ashley Bartko drilled a shot that was blocked from 18 yards out.  The long rebound sailed to midfield, to the waiting foot of SVC's Erin Mannella.  She then lofted a pass down the sideline, right to the foot of a streaking Adrianne Groth.  Groth shot a blast from 20 yards out into the back of the net, giving the Lady Bearcats a 1-0 lead.

The Lady Bearcats wasted no time to get an insurance goal, as Groth controlled a pass in the middle of the box from Shelly Teems, sending it high into the net for her second goal of the afternoon.  Kylie Simonini was also credited with an assist.

As the half wound down, Thomas More looked to gain the momentum, controlling the ball for the majority of the final five minutes.

With just over a minute left until halftime, Urban was whistled for a foul in front of the net, and the Saints were awarded a penalty kick.  Krystol Miller took the PK for the Saints, sending it low right.  Urban read it correctly, diving to knock the ball away to end the half.

The Saints came out strong in the second half, tallying five shots in the first 10 minutes, all of which were blocked or sailed past the goal.

In the game's 70th minute, the Saints finally were able to solve Urban, as Miller scored her team's first goal of the game off of an assist from Kaitlyn Cohen.

The Saints kept the pressure up, but the Lady Bearcat defense rose to the challenge, thwarting a number of Thomas More scoring opportunities.

As time wound down, Thomas More kept the flurry going, but as was the case all afternoon, the SVC defense blocked a number of shots from close range, sealing the one-goal win.

The Lady Bearcats did an effective job of keeping Thomas More's Brittany Yeggy in check.  Yeggy, who entered the game with 25 goals, leading all collegiate divisions, was held to just two shots, thanks to relentless pressure from SVC freshman defender Jessica Legg.

10/17 - Bethany

The Lady Bearcats extended their winning streak to three with a 2-0 shutout victory at Bethany.

Ashley Bartko opened the scoring with her first goal of the year in the game's 24th minute, with an assist credited to Adrianne Groth.

The 1-0 lead stood until the 64th minute, when Kylie Simonini scored her fifth goal of the season, assisted by Shelly Teems, to close out the day's scoring.

The Lady Bearcat defense was solid throughout, limiting the Bison to just nine shots, four on goal, all stopped by goalie Jessica Urban, who recorded her fifth shutout of the year.

SVC managed 21 shots, 14 on goal, while also owning a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks.

10/20 - Chatham

The Lady Bearcats extended their winning streak to four with a big 9-2 win at Chatham University.

Saint Vincent received goals from six different players, and outshot the Cougars 47-6 for the game.

Kylie Simonini, Katie Messinger, and Shelly Teems each scored two goals on the afternoon, while Erin Mannella, Ashley Bartko, and Michelle Stepien each had a goal apiece.

Bartko added three assists, Mannella and Teems two, and Simonini and Adrianne Groth one each.

10/23 - Thiel

Three first half goals were all the Lady Bearcats needed in their 3-0 win over Thiel College at a rainy Chuck Noll Field.

Adrianne Groth scored twice and Shelly Teems once, all within 30 minutes in the first half, while goalie Jessica Urban turned aside both shots that she faced on the afternoon.

After a number of SVC shots failed to find the net in the early going, Groth was able to get the Lady Bearcats on the board in the 10th minute, redirecting a short pass from Kylie Simonini into the net, to give SVC the 1-0 lead.

Twenty minutes later, Groth scored her second goal of the day, and team-leading eighth of the season, with assists from Simonini and Ashley Bartko, to put SVC up 2-0.

With just over two minutes before halftime, the Lady Bearcats scored the final tally of the afternoon.  Simonini sent a blast on goal, but it was deflected in front, rolling to Teems who was waiting on the post.  She quickly sent it on net, and Thiel goalie Jill Harry grabbed it after it went over the line, resulting in Teems' sixth goal of the season.

Over the first half of play, the Lady Bearcats outshot the Tomcats by a 22-1 margin, and owned a 10-1 advantage in shots on goal.

In the second half, SVC continued to control play, but was unable to add a fourth goal, as Henry, the reigning Presidents' Athletic Conference Player of the Week, made nine of her 16 stops over the final 45 minutes.   The Lady Bearcat defense once again was able to limit Thiel to just one shot on goal, and three total, helping Urban earn her sixth shutout of the season, setting a new SVC record.

It was the final home game of the season for the Lady Bearcats, and prior to the contest, the three senior members of the team- Urban, Erin Mannella, and Allie Lachat- were honored for their contributions to the program over the last four seasons.

10/27 - Waynesburg

Senior goalkeeper Jessica Urban recorded her school-record 7th shutout of the season as SVC blanked Waynesburg, 1-0.

Urban's defense played well in front of her, limiting the Waynesburg offense, while Kylie Simonini scored the game's only goal to lift SVC to the win.

The Lady Bearcats finish the regular season with a record of 11-5-2 and six consecutive wins.
