SVC Soccer
9/2 - Seton Hill

The Lady Bearcats were defeated 1-0 in their season opener by visiting Seton Hill University.

The visitors went on the attack to open play, tallying five shots in the first 12 minutes, but were unable to find the net, with Lady Bearcat goalie Kirstie Mills making a pair of key early saves.

The Griffins were able to score the lone goal of the afternoon in the game's 25th minute, when Mackiesh Taylor knocked home a loose ball in front.

Late in the first half, the Lady Bearcats' Leanna Seminsky had a pair of scoring chances, but saw one shot ring off the crossbar before she was robbed at close range by Seton Hill goalie Jenna Forzano, and the game entered the intermission with the Griffins up 1-0.

The SVC offense again looked poised to tie the game a number of times in the second half, with their best opportunity of the afternoon coming in the 62nd minute.  Midfielder Ann Henebery lofted a pass deep into Griffin territory, and it was chased down on the doorstep by teammate Carly Duffy.  She sent the ball toward the lower corner of the net, but Fordazo managed to make another sparkling save from less than six feet out to preserve the shutout.

Over the final two minutes, the Lady Bearcats tried to mount one last attack, controlling possession for most of that time, but the Griffin defense was up to the task, and left Latrobe with the shutout win.

For the contest, Seton Hill held a 20-12 advantage in total shots, but Mills was strong, finishing the day with eight saves.  The Griffin shutout was shared by keepers Forzano, who made four saves over the first 70 minutes of the game, and Sam Gilarski, who came on in the final 20 minutes to finish with two stops.

9/5 - Marietta Tournament I

The Lady Bearcats were defeated 8-2 by the College of Wooster in the opening day of the Marietta College Invitational Tournament.

Leanna Seminsky and Alex Shasko scored the Lady Bearcat goals, with the former coming in the game's 41st minute and the latter on a penalty kick one minute into the second half.

It wasn't enough to overcome Wooster, as the Fighting Scots opened the game with four goals in the first 34 minutes.  The goals by Seminsky and Shasko cut the SVC deficit in half, before Wooster ended the game with four more unanswered goals.

The Lady Bearcats were outshot 30-7 on the afternoon, with goalie Kirstie Mills tallying 10 saves for SVC.

9/6 - Marietta Tournament II

The Lady Bearcats dropped a tough 2-1 decision in double-overtime to Bluffton University in the second day of the Marietta College Invitational Tournament.

The game was a defensive struggle from the outset, as the first 78 minutes were scoreless until Bluffton scored to take the 1-0 lead.

The Lady Bearcats answered back just 90 seconds later, with Michelle Stepien scoring her first goal of the season unassisted to tie the game at 1-1 with 10 minutes remaining in the second half.   Neither team could score in regulation, and the game went to the first extra session.

SVC's Alex Shasko looked primed to put the Lady Bearcats in front two minutes into the first overtime, but her shot sailed just high.  Bluffton then went on the attack, rattling off four shots over the next two minutes, but none found the net, and the game was sent into a second extra session.

Bluffton was able to end the match 90 seconds into the second overtime, on a goal from Katy Wisby, who sent home a cross in the middle of the box.

SVC goalie Kirstie Mills was strong in the losing effort, making seven saves, and now has 27 stops through three contests.

Following the contest, SVC's Shasko and sophomore defender Logan Gamelier were each named to the all-tournament team.

9/8 - Juniata

For the second straight game in a row, the Lady Bearcats suffered a tough overtime defeat, falling 2-1 at Juniata.

Leanna Seminsky started the day's scoring in the game's 39th minute, putting the Lady Bearcats ahead 1-0 with a shot drilled into the corner of the net from 15 yards out.

Four minutes into the second half, the Golden Eagles were able to tie it up, when Erin Eddinger knocked in a cross to make the score 1-1.

In the closing minutes, SVC's offense looked primed to take the lead, posting four shots over the final three minutes, but the Lady Bearcats were unable to find the net, and regulation ended with the score tied at one.

Juniata wasted little time in the extra session, when Shannon Pierce got control of the ball in the middle of the box and drilled it home, giving the hosts the 2-1 win.

For the game, Juniata owned a 20-10 advantage in shots, with Lady Bearcat goalie Kirstie Mills finishing with five saves.

9/12 - Franciscan

The Lady Bearcats controlled play for the entire 90 minutes in their 3-0 home victory over Franciscan University.

Saint Vincent got on the board early, when Michelle Stepien took a pass at midfield from Carly Duffy and went to the goal untouched.  The Franciscan goalie came out of the box to challenge Stepien, but the SVC forward got around her and knocked the ball into the empty net to give SVC the 1-0 lead seven minutes into play.

Throughout the first half, the SVC offense was continually on the attack, owning a 6-2 advantage in shots over a 25-minute span, but the Lady Bearcats were unable to find the net until the closing seconds of the half.

This time it was Leanna Seminsky's turn to convert on a breakaway, picking up the ball at midfield and then beating the clock, and Franciscan's goalie, on the breakaway goal with just two seconds remaining.

As was the case over much of the first half, the Lady Bearcats again controlled the play to open up the second stanza, and Seminsky's second goal of the day, on a blast from 15 yards out assisted by Stepien, gave SVC another insurance marker, making the score 3-0 with just over 32 minutes remaining in play.

The Lady Bearcats continually kept Franciscan at bay over the final stages of the game, allowing only four second half shots, and coasted down the stretch for their first win of the 2009 season.

For the game, SVC owned a 17-12 advantage in shots, and took the only two corner kicks on the day.  Supported by a strong performance by defenders Logan Gamelier and Ashley Bartko, Lady Bearcat goalie Kirstie Mills made six saves in goal to earn the shutout win.

9/16 - Frostburg State

The Lady Bearcats were defeated 3-0 by visiting Frostburg St. University on the Saint Vincent turf.

The visiting Bobcats' offense was on the attack from the early going, and took the 1-0 lead in the seventh minute,  on an unassisted blast by Amanda Wharton from 15 yards out.

Frostburg jumped in front 2-0 exactly 20 minutes into the opening half, with Lauren Russell finding the upper corner of the net.

The game remained 2-0 Bobcats through the remainder of the first half, thanks to a solid performance in goal by SVC sophomore goalie Kirstie Mills, as she made seven stops over the first 45 minutes to keep the game close.

Five minutes into the second half, Frostburg's Cassie Donahue gave the visitors a third insurance goal,  converting on a breakaway from eight yards out.

Donahue's goal was the last of the game, as Mills made eight more stops over the second half, finishing with 15 for the game, a career high.  For the contest, the Bobcats owned a 30-6 advantage in shots, and FSU took eight corner kicks to the Lady Bearcats' one.

9/19 - Mount Union

The Lady Bearcats played well, but could not get on the scoreboard against a tough Mount Union College squad.  The final score was 3-0.

Kylee Kolesar scored twice for Mount Union (2-4-1).

On the day, Mount Union outshot Saint Vincent by a 10-7 tally.  Leanna Seminsky had five of the Lady Bearcat shots. Kirstie Mills posted three saves for the SVC (1-6).

9/22 - Pitt-Johnstown

The Lady Bearcats were defeated 2-0 by the visiting Mountain Cats of the University of Pittsburgh-Johnstown on the SVC turf.

UPJ managed a 23-3 advantage in shots, but had to withstand a late Lady Bearcat rally before scoring a late insurance goal to leave Latrobe with the two-goal victory.

The visitors got on the board early, when Lindsay Plowman picked up a loose ball from 25 yards on and found the back of the net just 10 minutes into the first half.

UPJ continued to press offensively throughout the first stanza, ending the first half with 10 shots and five corners, but the Lady Bearcat defense held strong, as goalie Kirstie Mills made four saves over the first 45 minutes, keeping the SVC deficit at one goal.

The Cats continued the offensive onslaught in the second half, tallying 12 more shots over the first 30 minutes, but they were still unable to add an insurance marker.

With just over 15 minutes left in the second frame, the Lady Bearcats began to increase their offensive pressure, continually advancing deep into UPJ territory, but goalie Stephanie Paha made a pair of quality saves, first ranging far out of her net to cut off a breakaway by Catherine Czapski, and then snaring a Michelle Stepien redirect attempt from less than 10 feet out.

The visitors finally were able to manage an insurance goal with just over seven minutes left, with Alicia Zack taking a through ball from Lanie Thompson and coming to the goal untouched, directing the shot past the outstretched arms of Mills and into the net.

Mills finished the afternoon with a total of nine saves, and she has now made 38 saves over SVC's last four games.

9/26 - Lycoming

The Lady Bearcats dropped a 2-0 decision to Lycoming College on the road, but put together perhaps their best team effort of the season.

Lycoming scored a pair of goals in the first half, and SVC was unable to respond with a goal of their own, but Coach Becky Stewart was encouraged by their overall effort.  "This was definitely our best game of the season.  Everyone played well.  I'm disappointed with the final score, but happy with how we played."

9/29 - Baldwin-Wallace

The Lady Bearcats were defeated 3-0 on the road by Baldwin-Wallace College.

Baldwin-Wallace came out of the gates strong, posting seven shots in the first 25 minutes of the game, finally finding the scoreboard in the 30th minute with a goal directly off a corner kick.

The score remained 1-0 at halftime, before B-W converted on a penalty kick five minutes into the second half.  The hosts then added a final insurance tally with 10 minutes left in regulation, scoring again directly off a corner.

The Lady Bearcats were out-shot 24-1 for the game, as goalie Kirstie Mills continued her strong play, making 10 saves.  B-W also owned an 8-0 advantage in corner kicks.

10/3 - Bethany

The Lady Bearcats were defeated on the road 3-1 by Bethany College.

The host Bison took a 1-0 lead 15 minutes into the first half, and then scored two more times over the first 25 minutes of the second stanza.

Saint Vincent's lone goal of the afternoon was scored by senior Alex Shasko, who buried a penalty kick with 12 minutes left in regulation.

For the game, SVC was out-shot 18-7, as Lady Bearcat goalie Kirstie Mills made seven saves in the losing effort.

10/7 - Waynesburg

Michelle Stepien scored twice as the Lady Bearcats defeated Waynesburg University by a score of 2-1.

The teams played to a scoreless tie at the half, but Stepien took a pass from Alex Shasko and scored to make it 1-0 just over five minutes into the second half.

Just under 30 minutes later, SVC lined up for a corner kick, and Logan Gamelier sent the ball into the box, where Stepien headed it into the net for a 2-0 lead.

Waynesburg added a goal with seven minutes left, but it wasn't enough, as SVC keeper Kirstie Mills saved five shots en route to the win.

10/9 - Thiel

The Lady Bearcats won their second straight, defeating Thiel College 6-0 on the Saint Vincent turf.

Saint Vincent posted a season-high 33 shots on the day, with Leanna Seminsky scoring three times and Alex Shasko twice to lead the Lady Bearcats to the win.

Shasko put the Lady Bearcats on the scoreboard first, taking a pass from Morgan Castle and lofting a shot from well over 20 yards out into the back of the net 17 minutes into play.

With 19 minutes left in the opening half, the Tomcats were whistled for a hand ball in front of the goal, and Shasko scored on the ensuing penalty kick to give SVC the two-goal advantage.

Seminsky then got in on the act, scoring her first of the day, and fifth of the season, with just over six minutes left until halftime to put the Lady Bearcats ahead 3-0, a score that would stand through halftime.

The score remained 3-0 for the first 15 minutes of the second half, until Michelle Stepien sent home a Shasko one-timer from right in front to put the Lady Bearcats in front by four.

Seminsky then scored twice in a five minute span, first lofting a shot into the upper corner from 15 yards out, and then knocking home another Shasko one-touch pass on the doorstep, to close out the day's scoring with 19 minutes left to play.

While the Lady Bearcat offense managed 33 shots, the team's defense was also stellar, allowing a season-low three shots from Thiel, with goalie Kirstie Mills making a pair of stops in goal for the win.

10/12 - Westminster

The Lady Bearcats suffered a 2-0 defeat under the lights at Presidents' Athletic Conference foe Westminster College.

The host Titans got on the board early in the first half, with Sarah Nee sending home an unassisted tally in the sixth minute.

The two team's defenses then took over, with SVC and Westminster managing just three shots apiece over the first half, and the score remained 1-0 heading into the intermission.

In the second half, Westminster wasted little time in gaining some insurance, with Danielle Struble scoring an unassisted tally just 66 seconds into play.

The Titan offense continued to press, but the hosts were unable to add onto their lead, with SVC goalie Kirstie Mills making eight of her nine saves over a second half in which Westminster took a total of 13 shot attempts.

Conversely, the Lady Bearcat offensive attack struggled on the evening, taking just two shots over the final 45 minutes, with Titan goalie Jen Cantella earning the shutout win.

10/18 - Washington & Jefferson

The visiting Washington & Jefferson Presidents defeated the Lady Bearcats 1-0 on the chilly Saint Vincent turf.

W&J owned a 21-5 advantage in shots for the game, but the Presidents were unable to solve the SVC defense until the 68th minute, when Elizabeth Bendick capitalized on a Lady Bearcat turnover to score the lone goal of the contest.

Saint Vincent goalie Kirstie Mills was strong despite the loss, making 11 saves, including a number from point blank range.

The Presidents' offense pressed from the start, at one point owning a 13-0 advantage in shots, while the W&J defense was equally as strong, not allowing an SVC shot until the game's 60th minute.

10/21 - Grove City

The Lady Bearcats suffered a 6-0 road loss at Grove City College.

The Wolverines mounted a strong offensive attack throughout the game, scoring three goals in each half and out-shooting SVC 33-5 for the game.

After the Lady Bearcats controlled the ball in the early stages of the game, posting a corner and a shot in the first five minutes, the Wolverines got on the scoreboard in the 11th minute on a goal by Emily Ostlund.

Grove City made the lead 2-0 on a goal from Elise Bender, before the Wolverines' Arielle Goyzueta found the net with just 1:25 remaining in the half to send the game into the intermission with the hosts up 3-0.

The Wolverines continued to add onto the lead in the second half, scoring goals in the 51st, 63rd, and 71st minutes to seal the 6-0 win.

Despite the defeat, SVC goalie Kirstie Mills was strong, making 11 saves, the sixth time on the season in which she stopped at least 10 shots.

10/24 - Geneva

The Lady Bearcats picked up a dramatic Senior Day victory, defeating Geneva College 3-2 on a last-minute goal by Leanna Seminsky.

Seminsky deflected in a blast by teammate Alex Shasko in the game's 89th minute to break a 2-2 tie and snap the Lady Bearcats' three-game losing skid.

The visitors got on the scoreboard first, with Rebecca Shaw sending a blast from 15 yards out just inside the upper post to give Geneva the 1-0 lead with 21 minutes gone in the opening half.

Saint Vincent was able to tie it up in the 33rd minute, when Carly Duffy banged home a one-timer from Shasko on the doorstep for her first collegiate goal.

The score remained 1-1 until 14 into the second half, when following a Geneva foul, Ashley Bartko sent the free kick deep into the Golden Tornado box and onto the head of a leaping Shasko, who directed it into the net to put the Lady Bearcats ahead 2-1.

The game was a defensive battle for the next 30 minutes, and it appeared as if the Lady Bearcats were going to hold off Geneva, until the Golden Tornadoes' Maura Allen stripped an SVC defender and went to goal untouched, scoring on the breakaway to tie it up at 2-2 with just under four minutes remaining in regulation.

SVC then went on a final push, with Shasko sending a shot in from the top of the box.  It deflected off of Seminsky's upper body and past Geneva goalie Lauren Londino to put the hosts up 3-2 with 1:02 left to play.  The Lady Bearcat defense then held off a final Geneva charge, and SVC earned the hard-fought and thrilling victory.

The stats were even throughout the game, with Geneva holding a slim 15-13 edge in shots.  Lady Bearcat goalie Kirstie Mills made seven saves to earn the win.

Shasko figured in on all three of the Lady Bearcat goals, with two assists in addition to her second half goal.

Prior to the game, Shasko and Bartko, along with sophomore Logan Gamelier, who is in her final season at Saint Vincent, were honored for their contributions to the SVC soccer program.

10/28 - Thomas More

The Lady Bearcats wrapped up the home portion of their 2009 schedule by battling Thomas More to a 0-0 double-overtime tie on the Saint Vincent turf.

The teams combined for 34 shots during the 110-minute defensive struggle, but neither the Saints or Lady Bearcats were able to score a decisive goal.

Thomas More's offense put constant pressure on the Lady Bearcats throughout, but goalie Kirstie Mills was strong, turning aside all 11 TMC shots on goal for her sixth double-digit save performance and fourth shutout of the season.  The Lady Bearcats' defensive unit, led by Ashley Bartko, Logan Gamelier, Haley Krol, and Emily Taylor, was strong throughout the contest in front of Mills.

While SVC was out-shot 26-8 and held without a corner kick over the 110-minute affair, the Lady Bearcats did have a number of scoring chances, as five of their attempted shots were on goal - two apiece from Bartko and Alex Shasko and one from Sam Shumaker.  Jenna Kramer was credited with the shutout in goal for the visitors.

The tie, their first of the season, moves SVC's record to 4-13-1, while the Lady Bearcat record against Presidents' Athletic Conference foes is now 3-3-1.  Thomas More, ranked fourth in NCAA Division-III's Great Lakes Region, saw its record move to 14-2-1.

10/31 - Chatham

The Lady Bearcats closed out the 2009 season with a 3-2 loss to Chatham University.

Saint Vincent posted 34 shots for the game, a season high, but were unable to overcome a hot start by the Cougars, who scored two goals in the first 15 minutes of the opening half.

The Lady Bearcats trimmed the deficit to 2-1 on Michelle Stepien's sixth goal of the season, assisted by Logan Gamelier, but the Cougars answered right back, with Kristie Brannon scoring off of a corner kick with five minutes remaining in the first half to take a 3-1 lead into the intermission.

With 29 minutes remaining in the second half, SVC's Leanna Seminsky once again made it a one-goal game with an unassisted goal, but it was as close as the visitors would get, as Chatham held on for the 3-2 victory.

The 34-12 advantage in shots was the largest of the year for SVC, as eight different Lady Bearcats took at least two shot attempts.  The Lady Bearcats also owned a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks.

Chatham goalie Lauren Strang was strong in goal, making eight saves, including seven over the final 45 minutes.  Kirstie Mills took the loss in goal for SVC, making four saves.
