11/8: Lady Bearcats battle, lose to Malone in playoffs
The Saint Vincent Lady Bearcats' season came to a close with a 1-0 loss on the road against Malone College in the first round of the American Mideast Conference playoffs.
The game was scoreless until there were just two minutes left in the second half, when Malone scored on a corner kick.
"It was an even game, and our entire team played well," said Coach Keith Harmon.
Saint Vincent outshot Malone 10-8 in the game, and narrowly missed an opportunity with 10 minutes remaining in the game when a Shelly Muto shot hit the crossbar.
The Lady Bearcats end the 2003 season with a 9-10-1 record.
11/2: Saint Vincent ends regular season with victory
The Lady Bearcats outlasted Shawnee State 1-0 in a tight defensive battle. Fittingly, the Saint Vincent goal was scored by defender Tearra Kuhn (junior, Latrobe/Greater Latrobe HS) off an assist from Chris Basilone (sopomore, Springdale/Sprindale HS). Senior Andrea Taylor (McMurray/Peters Twp HS) recorded the shutout in goal.
The Lady Bearcats finish the regular season with an 9-9-1 overall record, 5-3 (third place) in the AMC North.
10/28: Lady Bearcats earn crucial victoryThe Saint Vincent Lady Bearcats upset Seton Hill University by a 1-0 score, clinching third place in the American Mideast Conference North Division.
Julie Gongaware scored the day's only goal after a direct kick by Jenna Hall hit the crossbar, but it was the defense's day to shine.
"Andrea Taylor had another strong game in goal," said Coach Keith Harmon. "All four of our defenders also played extremely well, Erin Urick, Tearra Kuhn, Ashley Shasko and Alexandra Brunory. Now we'll get a better seed in the tournament."
It was the third consecutive victory for the Lady Bearcats.
10/25: Lady Bearcats edge closer to playoffs with winThe Saint Vincent Lady Bearcats continued their late-season push for a playoff spot with a convincing 9-1 win over Carlow College.
Julie Gongaware (Jeannette/Jeannette HS) and April Andriscin (Springdale/Springdale HS) each scored twice for SVC. Other goal scorers were Gina Lizza, Chris Basilone, Jenna Hall, Lindsay Baudoux and Stephanie Hewitson.
Basilone, a sophomore from Springdale (Springdale HS) also added four assists. Other assists were recorded Ashley Shasko, Shelley Muto, Jill Pollack, Cara Harrity (2), Gongaware, Lizza and Hall. Andrea Taylor recorded the win in goal for the Lady Bearcats.
10/22: Bearcats defeat AMC North rival Geneva
The Saint Vincent Lady Bearcats earned an important divisional win at home on Wednesday by defeating the Golden Tornadoes of Geneva College by a 3-0 final score.
"Andrea Taylor made some incredible saves in the first half," said Coach Keith Harmon. "She kept us in the game. Our defense was very good. Tearra Kuhn was exceptional, and Erin Urick, as always, played a great game."
Gina Lizza scored two goals to lead the offense, while Stephanie Hewitson added a goal and an assist. Chris Basilone assisted on all three goals, while Julie Gongaware and Lindsay Badoux were each credited with an assist as well.
According to Coach Harmon, "It was a big win for us, and helps us a lot. Now we need to beat Carlow this weekend."
10/14: SVC women earn key road win
The Lady Bearcats defeated Notre Dame College of Ohio on Tuesday afternoon by a 4-0 margin. The team was led by Chris Basilone, who recorded 2 goals and an assist. Jenna Hall added a goal, while Gina Lizza had a goal and an assist. The senior duo of Shelley Muto and Julie Gongaware provided the support, combining for five assists, three for Muto and two for Gongaware.
"We played well," said Coach Keith Harmon. "It was a conference game that we needed to win, and we went out and did what we had to do."
10/8: SVC, Mt. Vernon battle to scoreless tie
It won't go down in the record books as a win, but the Lady Bearcats played their best game of the year on Wednesday against Mount Vernon Nazarene (OH).
Mount Vernon entered the game 10-1 and had the home field advantage, but could not get a goal past the tough Bearcat defense. "Erin Urick (junior, Smithton/Yough HS) played the game of her college career," said Coach Keith Harmon. "Ashley Shasko, Tearra Kuhn, Jill Pollack, Alexandra Brunory, all of our defenders played a phenomenal game. Mount Vernon has been ranked in the top 25 this year and is an excellent team. Andrea Taylor played a terrific game in goal and our defense, and our offense, too, played a great game. We had some chances to score, they had more, but it was just a well played game. Our team played hard for 110 minutes."
10/6: IUP defeats SVC women
Indiana University of Pennsylvania defeated the Saint Vincent women on Monday afternoon in a non-conference game by the final score of 5-1.
Freshman midfielder April Andriscin scored her first collegiate goal, assisted by sophomore Christina Basilone. Both Andriscin and Basilone are graduates of Springdale HS.
10/2: Lady Bearcats drop 2-1 decision
The SVC women's soccer team dropped their third straight 2-1 decision on Wednesday afternoon at Saint Vincent Field, this time to the Blue Knights of Urbana University.
"It's going to come," said Coach Keith Harmon. "We could easily be 7-4 instead of 4-7. We've outplayed the last three teams and come up short each time. The women played hard, played well, and hopefully we can get a win next time."
Julie Gongaware scored the Saint Vincent goal, assisted by Shelley Muto and Gina Lizza. Christina Basilone had an excellent game at midfield, while Tearra Kuhn and Erin Urick supplied solid defense.
9/30: Ursuline defeats SVC, 2-1
The SVC women lost 2-1 to Ursuline College in an AMC North Division game. The Bearcats outshot Ursuline 17-6 in the second half, but could not hold off the charge of the Ursuline Arrows.
Senior Julie Gongaware scored Saint Vincent's lone goal, assisted by Tearra Kuhn and Shelly Muto.
9/27: SVC drops close conference opener
The Saint Vincent women lost a tough conference matchup on Saturday against Daemen College by the final score of 2-1.
The game was played in Amherst, NY in a driving rainstorm. Freshman Gina Lizza (Scottdale/Southmoreland HS) scored the lone Bearcat goal, assisted by Jenna Hall (freshman, Parkersburg, WV) and Alexandra Brunory (freshman, Buena Vista/Elizabeth Forward HS).
The score was 2-1 at halftime and Saint Vincent had nearly a dozen shots in the second half, but the Daemen defense kept the Lady Bearcats off the scoreboard.
9/21: Bearcats record win, tie
The SVC women routed Oberlin College of Ohio 5-1 in the first half of the doubleheader. Freshman Gina Lizza (Southmoreland, Scottdale HS) and sophomore Christina Basilone (Springdale HS) each scored two goals in the non-conference game. Former Jeannette HS teammates Shelley Muto and Julie Gongaware (both seniors) played well, with Muto recording three assists and Gongaware added a goal and two assists. Freshman Jenna Hall (Parkersburg, WV) added an assist.
9/12: SVC Women win conference opener
The Bearcats started off quickly moving the ball into Roberts Wesleyan territory where Shelly Muto (#6 Sr., Jeannette HS) sent the ball high into the air finding Gina Lizza (#5 Fr., Southmoreland HS) who was able to convert a very difficult shot into the gameís first goal.
In the second half, Saint Vincent was able to push deeper into Roberts Wesleyanís zone and score two more goals (Muto and Jenna Hall #8 Fr., Parkersburg), due in part to the incredible speed of the midfield displayed by Muto, Christina Basilone (#9 Soph., Springdale HS), and Alexandra Brunory (#16 Fr., Elizabeth Forward HS). They flew to the ball covering the entire field while receiving support from the consistently tight defense, led by Tearra Kuhn (#3, junior, Latrobe). Ashley Shasko (#15 Fr., Norwin HS) covered her targets with an attitude, continuously frustrating Roberts Wesleyanís offense.
One of the dayís stars was senior goaltending veteran Andrea Taylor (#00 Sr., Peters Township). She recorded yet another shutout and made several beautiful saves in the process, one of which was an outstanding corner-kick by Roberts Wesleyan. The ball sailed over the heads of SVCís defense and towards an awaiting opponent, but Taylor was able to leap into the air and catch the ball in mid-air above the player's head.
9/9/03: Malone upends Saint Vincent
Lady Bearcats dropped a 3-0 decision in a game that was much closer than the final score shows.
Thanks to strong defense from Alexandra Brunory, Ashley Shasko, Erin Urick and Tearra Kuhn, Saint Vincent kept the game close for the first 85 minutes, with Malone's only goal coming on a penalty kick. Malone added two late goals in the final five minutes for a 3-0 decision in a non-divisional game.
The Saint Vincent women are now 2-3.
9/6/03: SVC Women defeat Clarion
The Saint Vincent women's soccer team evened their record at 2-2 with a non-conference road win against Clarion University on Saturday afternoon.
Julie Gongaware (senior, Jeannette HS) scored the game's only goal, with an assist from former high school teammate and fellow senior Shelley Muto.
Andrea Taylor (senior, Peters Township HS) recorded the shutout in the net for Saint Vincent, with help from the remainder of the defense.
9/3/03: Gongaware scores 100th point
Senior Julie Gongaware (Jeannette HS) led the comeback for Saint Vincent on Wednesday against Walsh with a goal, but the Lady Bearcats fell short in a 3-2 loss against Walsh in North Canton, OH.
For Gongaware, it was her 100th career point at Saint Vincent, and she became the first player in school history to reach the plateau.
Freshman Gina Lizza (Southmoreland HS) had a two-point effort for the visiting Latrobe squad, assisting on Gongaware's goal and scoring one of her own, assisted by Christina Basilone (Springdale HS).
8/30/03: Lady Bearcats come up short against FSU
In womenís soccer action Saturday afternoon, the Saint Vincent Lady Bearcats came up short at home to Frostburg State of Maryland, losing 2-0.Frostburg State took an early lead in the first half when forward Karen Kotofski put them on the board with a shot that deflected off a Lady Bearcat defender. Kotofski finished off a Saint Vincent rally attempt, which included five shots on goal, two by freshman Jenna Hall (Parkersburg, WV HS), with a goal late in the second half, on a two on none breakaway, beating Lady Bearcat goalie Andrea Taylor (Peters Township HS).
Taylor kept the Lady Bearcats in the game, registering 13 saves in net. Despite the efforts of Taylor and defender Erin Urick (Yough HS), the Lady Bearcats fell to a record of 1-1 overall.
8/29/03: Salem International defeats SVC
The Saint Vincent College soccer teams headed south to West Virginia on Friday afternoon for a doubleheader against NCAA-Division II Salem International University to open the 2003 season.
The SVC women won 2-1 thanks to goals by Julie Gongaware (Jeannette HS) and Jenna Hall (Parkersburg, WV HS). Shelley Muto (Jeannette HS) recorded the assist on Gongaware's score.
Andrea Taylor (Peters Township HS) provided 15 saves in goal for the Bearcats (1-0).
