Anthony Massetto Performs in Italian Vocal Competition

Anthony Massetto, a senior vocal performance major from Murrysville, received an honorable mention at the Bologna International Vocal Competition held this summer in Bologna, Italy. Massetto studied for several weeks in Bologna with highly recognized coaches and conductors and attended the program through a generous grant of the Tom and Elizabeth Andreoli Fund. As a part of his award in the competition, Massetto performed with a live orchestra in Italy.

Massetto wanted to travel to Italy to experience European opera culture.

“Given that I primarily sing repertoire in Italian, it was an intriguing opportunity to be able to study Italian in Italy while being taught by native speakers of the language. The opportunity to study in a culture that lives and breathes opera was one that I could not pass up,” Massetto said.

For Massetto, performing is not only a beloved way to spend time, but also a way for him to both practice and share his faith.

“Performing is the opportunity for me to share with people the gifts that God has blessed me with. Whenever I am given the opportunity to perform, I am performing for God, with God and through God, and that is something that is extremely important to me. I believe I was put on Earth to sing, so when I perform I am fulfilling the destiny that God has planned for me,” he said.

Thomas Octave, associate professor of music, stressed the value of the experience. “The experience Anthony had at the Bologna Academy and Competition is incredible for his growth and development as a young artist,” he said. “We are so proud of his accomplishments at such a young age! He has represented Saint Vincent College so well.”

Massetto was able to study alongside students from all over the world and was able to experience many cultures through his interactions with his peers. He is confident that the relationships he made during the trip will be long-lasting.

After graduating, Massetto plans to attend graduate school and pursue a master’s degree in vocal performance. Massetto plans to continue performing professionally and eventually to become a vocal instructor himself.
