Casey Markle, a Latrobe native and junior environmental science major at Saint Vincent College, was awarded the 2018 David A. Long, Ph.D., Memorial Scholarship from the Water Works Operators’ Association of Pennsylvania on Sept. 24, 2018.

In the past two summers, Markle was a research assistant and retrieved samples from streams throughout Westmoreland County to examine the water quality. Casey examined the interaction between abandoned mine drainage and wastewater. He has presented the results of his research at a regional environmental symposium and at the statewide Pennsylvania Academy of Sciences Conference.

While he is in Australia, Markle intends to research environmental issues such as water pollution problems affecting coastal regions.
