LATROBE, PA – The 47th season of the Saint Vincent College Concert Series will continue Feb. 23, when the award-winning Argus Quartet performs at 7 p.m. in the Saint Vincent Archabbey Basilica.

Comprised of violinists Clara Kim and Jason Issokson, cellist Joann Whang and violist Dana Kelley, the quartet has gained a reputation as one of today’s most dynamic and versatile young ensembles, and is dedicated to reinvigorating the audience-performer relationship through innovative concerts and diverse repertoire. Connecting and building a community of engaged listeners is at the core of the quartet’s mission, and the group believes that today’s ensembles can honor the storied chamber music traditions of the past by forging a new path forward. Their repertoire includes not only staples of the chamber music canon but also a large number of pieces by living composers.

The quartet’s busy 2018-19 schedule includes dates in 15 different states across the country, including concerts at Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall, Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall, Chicago’s Dame Myra Hess Concert Series, Washington D.C. Performing Arts, the University of California – Los Angeles (UCLA), Chamber Music Society of Detroit, Amherst College and Juneau Jazz and Classics in Alaska.

The Argus Quartet was the first prize winner at the 2017 M-Prize Chamber Arts Competition, and has performed in a number of premier venues, including Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall and Zankel Hall, the Albany Symphony’s American Music Festival, Bang on a Can at the Noguchi Museum, the Hear Now Music Festival, James Madison University’s Contemporary Music Festival, Princeton University and the Shalin Liu Performance Center at Rockport Music.

Since fall 2017, the group has served an appointment as the Graduate Quartet in Residence at the Julliard School, where the members work closely with the Julliard String Quartet. Argus made its Lincoln Center recital debut in May of 2018 with a performance at Alice Tully Hall.

From 2015-17 the quartet served as the Fellowship Quartet in Residence at the Yale School of Music and was the first ensemble to be mentored by the Brentano String Quartet in that capacity, while during the 2016-17 season, the musicians served as the Ernst Stiefel Quartet in Residence at the Caramoor Center for Music and the Arts.

Recent commissions include new quartets by Donald Crockett, composer and Grammy nominee Eric Guinivan, the 2014 Hermitage Prize winner Thomas Kotcheff and Guggenheim Fellowship recipient Juri Seo. The quartet has received grants from Chamber Music America and the Caramoor Center for Music and the Arts in support of their commissioning efforts.

Argus served as the Quartet in Residence at New Music on the Point under the guidance of the JACK Quartet, and was also selected as one of three ensembles to perform works from Kronos Quartet’s “Fifty for the Future” commissioning project at Carnegie Hall.

Education and outreach have been an important part of the Argus Quartet’s mission since its founding in 2013. The quartet has worked with students at Yale University, James Madison University, Rockport Music, the Milken School, the Young Musicians Foundation and Princeton University.
