LATROBE, Pennsylvania – Saint Vincent College will host its 35th annual Sports Friendship Day on Sunday, March 24, in the Robert S. Carey Student Center for persons with special needs, intellectual disabilities or physical limitations.
Sponsored by Saint Vincent College Campus Ministry, Sports Friendship Day is a day full of fun and activities designed for those aged 7 to adult.
“Sports Friendship Day is a wonderful day when Saint Vincent students and both young and older people from the area have time together, have fun and enjoy being present to one another, being friends,” said Br. Norman Hipps, O.S.B., Saint Vincent College president. “We are pleased to see this tradition has continued for 35 years and look forward to its continuing well into the future.”
“This is one of the best events on campus each year,” said Jody Marsh, coordinator of service for Saint Vincent Campus Ministry. “It hits on so many of the hallmarks that the College works to promote. I can’t think of another day where so many clubs, teams and students in general unite for a day of friendship. It’s a day that brings joy to so many, and that joy not only encourages our guests’ happiness, but it improves the students’ outlooks as well. Our hope is that the students volunteering will leave feeling that they got more from the experience than they gave.”
After a welcome from Br. Norman and an opening prayer from Fr. Killian Loch, O.S.B., director of Campus Ministry, the participants will take part in an array of activities, including sports, arts and crafts, face painting, a singalong, photo booth and karaoke. They are then invited to Mass, celebrated by Fr. Anthony Grossi, O.S.B., in the Mary, Mother of Wisdom Student Chapel, followed by dinner.
A myriad of Saint Vincent clubs and organizations will take part in the festivities, including Art Club; March of the Bearcats; Swing Dance Club; SVC Women in Business; Active Minds; Festival of Praise; Computer Science Club; the Gilbert and Sullivan Club; and the golf, volleyball, rugby and basketball teams. Additionally, the Saint Vincent Student Government Association will provide commemorative t-shirts for the participants, while the Bearcat B.E.S.T. (Building Excellence through Skills Training) students aided in selecting the logo and craft activities and inviting buddies to participate.
Headed by Fr. Killian and Marsh, the Sports Friendship Day committee consists of students Jessica Hartner, Randal Cochenour, Bryanna Musser, Megan Miller, Jimmy Rosa, Alexander Kidwell, Ashley Davis, Bridget Sigg, Dustin Sinclair, Gina Coldren, Helena Zrile, Joseph Heldrich and Millicent Caffrey.
