LATROBE, PA – Saint Vincent College’s Benedictine Leadership Studies Program’s annual spring break trip to Rome, as well as the Summer Institute in Rome, offers students and faculty the chance to build relationships with Benedictine monks from all over the world who are studying in the Eternal City. Saint Vincent College benefitted this past spring from one such relationship.
Fr. Henri Poujol, O.S.B., of Saint-Wandrille Abbey in France, spent the spring semester at Saint Vincent collaborating with Dr. Carl Vater, C’09, assistant professor of philosophy in the School of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, and also teaching Medieval Philosophy. Fr. Henri is pursuing his doctorate and became familiar with Dr. Vater’s work through his dissertation studies. Dr. Michael Krom, professor and chair of the Department of Philosophy, encouraged Fr. Henri to request permission to study with Dr. Vater, and this led to a fruitful semester for him at Saint Vincent. In addition to his weekly meetings with Dr. Vater and teaching a Medieval Philosophy class, Fr. Henri said masses for Campus Ministry, heard confessions at the Festivals of Praise and helped out with retreats. At the end of the semester, he gave a lecture to the Saint Vincent community on the relationship between philosophy and monasticism.
