Bishop Emeritus Zubik, Rabbi Emeritus Gibson to speak on Nostra Aetate at Rabbi Edelstein lecture

by Public Relations | September 08, 2025

Bishop Emeritus David Zubik and Rabbi Emeritus James A. Gibson will convene for the Rabbi Jason Z. Edelstein Endowment for Catholic-Jewish Dialogue lecture at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 28, in the Fred M. Rogers Center on the Saint Vincent College campus.

The presentation, “An Evening of Dialogue and Unity: Honoring the 60th Anniversary of Nostra Aetate,” is aimed at commemorating the landmark declaration of the Second Vatican Council that transformed Catholic-Jewish relations and laid the foundation for interfaith understanding around the world.

Bishop Zubik, bishop emeritus of the Diocese of Pittsburgh, and Rabbi Gibson, rabbi emeritus of Temple Sinai, will share their insights, stories and visions for the path ahead. Their presentation will explore the significance of Nostra Aetate, progress made over the past 60 years and work that remains in fostering mutual respect and friendship among all people.

Nostra Aetate, issued Oct. 27, 1965, marked a watershed moment in the modern history of interfaith relations. The Catholic Church for the first time formally rejected all forms of antisemitism, acknowledged the shared spiritual heritage of Christians and Jews and encouraged open dialogue with people of other religions.

The document has since inspired numerous initiatives, partnerships and friendships—locally and globally—anchored in the principles of dignity, respect and love.

Following the dialogue between Bishop Zubik and Rabbi Gibson, audience members will be invited to engage in a question-and-answer session. A reception and community gathering will close out the two-hour event.
