Fred Rogers Institute’s Family Connection Groups highlight mothers

by Public Relations | February 11, 2026

LATROBE, PA – Fred Rogers Institute’s Family Connection Groups seek to bring together area mothers of children ages 0-5 living in Westmoreland County for eight free online sessions aimed at sharing everyday experiences caring for their children.

During the sessions, group members will draw from the wisdom of Fred Rogers and discuss the “Six Fundamentals of Learning and Growing” (self-worth, trust, curiosity, solitude, looking and listening carefully, and play) and how these connect to being a mother. The online sessions are not classes but instead serve as opportunities to connect with and be supported by other mothers.

“After years of supporting educators in professional learning communities, the Fred Rogers Institute has noticed a need for communities of connection for families as well, especially locally in Westmoreland County,” said Sarah Goehring, director of programs at the Institute. “We hope that these Family Connection Groups can be spaces of belonging and support, particularly in the early phases of motherhood. We also hope that moms of young children will find the wisdom of Fred Rogers comforting in the challenges and joys of motherhood.”

Family Connection Groups will take place online via Zoom at 11:30 a.m. March 2, 9, 16, 23 and 30, and April 13, 20 and 27. The sessions will last one hour. Interested participants can sign up online. Space is limited and the registration deadline is Friday, Feb. 13.

“We hope moms will engage in meetings however they are comfortable and able—at home with a child on your lap, at work on a lunch break or in the car driving to work,” event organizers added.

A second group for mothers living outside of Westmoreland County is filled. Interested participants are invited to complete an online form if they would like to be notified when the Global Family Connection Groups are open for the next cohort.
