Br. Elliott Maloney, O.S.B., recalls “Memories of a Pittsburgh Boyhood”
LATROBE, PA – Brother Elliott Maloney, O.S.B., C’68, S’72, PhD, a professor of sacred Scripture within the Saint Vincent Seminary and respected monk of Saint Vincent Archabbey, will present a special author talk and book signing event on Thursday, April 9, from 4-4:45 p.m., at the Verostko Center for the Arts, located inside the Dale P. Latimer Library on the Saint Vincent College campus.
Br. Elliott will be discussing his latest work, “6928 Thomas Boulevard: Memories of a Pittsburgh Boyhood.” A reception with refreshments will directly follow the event, which is free and open to the public.
The book offers readers a heartfelt glimpse into the happy childhood of a Catholic boy growing up in 1950s Pittsburgh. Far from a documentary or a work of fiction, the memoir presents the recollections of “Buddy” Maloney, including his family life in the North Point Breeze community in the east end of Pittsburgh, neighborhood adventures with friends and school experiences from kindergarten through eighth grade.
The narrative warmly recalls the nuns at Holy Rosary School, parish life and the role of the Church as a central influence in family and community.
“I wrote from the perspective of a six- to 12-year-old boy,” Br. Elliott explained, “with some brief reflections added some 70 years later. My hope is that these stories of bygone days will spark good conversation about the past—and about how we raise our children today.”
The event will feature short readings from the book, followed by a book signing. Guests will have the opportunity to meet the author, have copies autographed and enjoy light refreshments at the reception. Payment by cash, check and credit/debit cards will be accepted for book purchases.
“6928 Thomas Boulevard: Memories of a Pittsburgh Boyhood” is available in paperback and hardcover editions and can be purchased at major booksellers, the Saint Vincent College bookstore and through Archabbey Publications.
Following prep school in Buffalo, New York, Br. Elliott went to Saint Vincent College and entered the monastery as a novice in 1965, taking first vows as a monk in 1966. After college graduation, he studied in Rome for three years and in 1972 earned a pontifical degree in sacred theology at the Pontifical Athenaeum of Sant'Anselmo. He then began the PhD program in New Testament studies at Fordham University in New York, which he completed in 1978.
Br. Elliott began teaching at Saint Vincent in 1976, later chairing the Religious Studies Department in the College for 13 years, all while holding a professorship in the Seminary in New Testament studies and Biblical languages.
He still teaches two courses yearly in the Seminary and is in his 101st semester. Br. Elliott continues his monastic life at the Archabbey.
