LATROBE, PA – Future Saint Vincent College pre-dental students will have the opportunity to apply for a scholarship through the Charles A. Beck Jr., C’71, DMD, Scholars Program thanks to a recent $500,000 contribution by the late dentist’s beloved widow, Elisa Voelker-Beck.
This distinctive program will honor the Beck family’s commitment to investing in the education of future generations and honor the memory of Beck, who died on Sept. 1, 2025, and his career in dentistry.
“Dr. Beck was a preeminent dentist and researcher who brought the best possible care to his patients,” said Father Paul Taylor, O.S.B., C’87, S’91, PhD, president of Saint Vincent College. His retirement was sadly premature after he fell victim to an attack that left him with a brain injury. Beck’s wife, a physical therapist, also became his caregiver for 22 years after the accident.
The College will annually select at least one student pursuing a degree in the pre-dental professional program. Qualified students must maintain a minimum 3.5 GPA and meet minimum standards in accordance with the College’s scholarship policy in place at the time of the award.
The scholarship award is given in addition to any federal or state grants that a student may receive. All applicants must apply for federal and state grants for which they may be eligible. The College will determine the amounts of individual awards, which may vary from year to year.
Any individual, foundation, trust, company or organization may contribute additional gifts of money or other assets to the scholarship fund.
Beck was an oral and maxillofacial surgeon. His daughter, Dr. Erika Novak, was inspired by her father and entered the medical field. She now practices as a veterinarian and lives in Pisgah Forest, North Carolina.
Beck had strong family ties to Saint Vincent. His uncle was Rev. Aelred J. “Uncle Joe” Beck, O.S.B., P’40, C’45, S’48, who offered inspiration and prayers. The late dentist’s brothers are Dr. Donald J. Beck, C’79, DPM, and Ronald Beck, P’70. His son is Charles A. Beck III, C’08.
“I had the blessing to visit Elisa and Charlie each spring,” Father Paul said. “Elisa’s famous salmon soufflé was the best fare for a Lenten Friday lunch at their home. We often discussed the strong academic science curriculum of Saint Vincent College. Charlie excelled in these classes, and Father Aelred was always there to encourage him.”
