SVC accreditation is reaffirmed by Middle States Commission on Higher Education

by Public Relations | May 20, 2026

LATROBE, PA – Saint Vincent College received reaffirmation of accreditation from the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE) during the spring semester, reinforcing the College’s mission of providing “quality undergraduate and graduate education for men and women to enable them to integrate their professional aims with the broader purposes of human life.”

The commission’s accreditation process ensures institutional accountability, self-appraisal, improvement and innovation through peer review and the rigorous application of standards within the context of institutional mission.

The March 12 announcement follows a comprehensive multi-year self-study, resulting in an over 120-page report and a peer evaluator team visit in October 2025.

The team hosted discussions with Saint Vincent College Board of Directors members, faculty, administrators, students and community members and engaged the broader faculty and staff community during two open forum sessions.

“Our successful navigation of the self-study process these past two years was the result of the diligent work of our community,” said Father Paul Taylor, O.S.B., C’87, S’91, PhD, president of Saint Vincent College. He highlighted the leadership of Dr. Marisa Carlson, C’03, director of assessment and institutional research, and Dr. Christopher McMahon, a professor of theology at the College. Both served as co-chairs of the MSCHE self-study during the accreditation process.

“They set a high bar for us to meet in the future,” Father Paul noted. “This success, however, is due to the dedication of everyone in the Saint Vincent community, from our Board of Directors to students, faculty and staff who were involved in meetings, gathered information for the self-study and helped to move the process forward.”

He added that the process was an opportunity to set in place systems that enable continuous improvement that will serve Saint Vincent well in the near and long-term future.

“We must continue our efforts to provide students with an unparalleled education and strong career outcomes, maintain a collaborative and positive atmosphere on campus, and promote our Catholic, Benedictine, liberal arts and sciences mission and values,” Father Paul said. “Those efforts will ensure our future.”

The College was first accredited in 1921. Accreditation by the MSCHE is the central way in which Saint Vincent externally validates its mission and is applicable to both the College and Seminary. As accreditation is reaffirmed, the College can continue administering federal grants and student loans. Additionally, accreditation facilitates the transfer of academic credit for students and ensures that all academic work will be recognized by accredited graduate and professional schools.

The next evaluation visit is scheduled for 2032-2033.

In the MSCHE team’s judgement, the institution appears to meet all affiliation requirements and seven accreditation standards: mission and goals; ethics and integrity; design and delivery of the student learning experience; support of the student experience; educational effectiveness assessment; planning, resources and institutional improvement; and governance, leadership and administration.

In its report, the MSCHE team noted significant accomplishments, including:

  • The reimaging and regrouping of academic success, student affairs and admission as one central team, reporting to Dr. Dana Winters, C’06, vice president for enrollment and student success, deeming it an “innovative and thoughtful decision” that will “aid in the ongoing recruitment, retention and graduation of students.”
  • Departmental assessment plans and data to help tell the story of the work done to assist students outside the classroom.
  • The creation of Mission, Vision and Values Day, highlighting the initiative as a profound way to celebrate the institution, as well as see what the students are interpreting as the College’s mission.
  • The College’s Career and Professional Development Center’s (CPDC) First-Destination study that shows nearly 100% of respondents are employed in their field or pursuing graduate studies.
  • Restructuring that established the Office of Enrollment Management and Student Success, which has enhanced coordination and resulted in more integrated and effective student support services.
  • Enhancements in assessment across programs.
  • Engaged participation of the Board of Directors in the self-study process.
  • Broad engagement from the campus community in developing the self-study and in positioning the document to be a resource for continuous self-improvement and a lodestone in future strategic planning efforts.

This reaffirmation of accreditation comes during a period of profound growth and transformation for the College. Over the past several years, Saint Vincent has expanded academic offerings and deepened community partnerships. The new Dunlap Family Athletic and Recreation Center will soon open, and construction of Rhodora and John Donahue Hall, a state-of-the-art facility that will house the College’s Department of Nursing, is in full swing. Additionally, Sauerkraut Tower, an iconic Saint Vincent landmark and former water tower, will soon be reborn as the Latimer Library Tower thanks to a multi-million-dollar renovation and expansion project.

MSCHE is a global institutional accreditor made up of volunteer, peer-based, nonprofit members who assure students and the public of the educational quality for over 500 institutions of higher education.
