LATROBE, PA – After Mike McCarthy finished his first Training Camp at Saint Vincent College, the first-year Steelers head coach was immediately thinking of next year’s three-week getaway to the storied campus.
“I’m actually looking forward to next year because I’m going to enjoy Training Camp next year,” he said as he referenced first-year administrative duties that took up the bulk of his time. “Saint Vincent, just as a whole, it’s an A-plus. I really think this is not only a special place, but this is a great place to train a football team, just the whole environment and so forth. The only really negative was we had to cancel a couple of practices. Our best practices are when our fans are out there, and it’s an awesome environment to be in.”
Over a three-week span, thousands of fans converged on campus and settled on the Chuck Noll Field bleachers and nearby hillside to watch practice sessions. Additionally, the popular evening practice under the lights at Latrobe Memorial Stadium was held Saturday, Aug. 8.
“The Pittsburgh Steelers and Saint Vincent College prioritize hospitality for our fans. Saint Benedict wrote 1,500 years ago that when we welcome the guest, we can see God more clearly,” said Father Paul Taylor, O.S.B., C’87, S’91, PhD, president of Saint Vincent College. “Throughout this camp, we’ve seen many moments of excited fans who have an opportunity to see the team up close preparing for this season. These fans motivate the players.
“Some fans leave Training Camp with a bit more hope and joy, whether it’s because they met their favorite Steeler and got his autograph, or because they lit a candle in the Basilica. In the end, everyone departs each day a little better.”
Four practice sessions were marred by inclement weather during the 59th Training Camp at the College. To compensate, the Steelers were able to utilize the new Dunlap Family Athletic and Recreation Center, which features a 70-yard NFL-approved synthetic turf field inside the facility.
The Steelers have called Saint Vincent College “home” in the summertime since 1966. Factoring in a two-year gap due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, next year will be the 60th installment of Training Camp at the College.
“We’re thankful for Mr. Rooney and Coach McCarthy, and the entire Steelers organization for their presence this summer at Training Camp,” Father Paul added. “As they begin the 2026 season, we pray for the health and safety of the Steelers players and coaches, and for Steelers Nation around the globe.”
