LATROBE, PA – Dr. Mary Regina Boland, C’10, an assistant professor of data science at Saint Vincent College, was recently recognized by Springer Nature with two Editor of Distinction awards for her work as managing editor of “BioData Mining,” a peer-reviewed open access scientific journal.
The Springer Nature Editorial Contribution Award recognizes Boland’s placement among the top 20% of editors for manuscripts sent to peer review, highlighting careful evaluation of submissions and strong stewardship of the peer review process.
The second honor, the Springer Nature Author Service Award, recognizes Boland’s placement among the top 20% of editors for time to first decision, reflecting her commitment to delivering an efficient, constructive and fair experience for authors.
Following a term as managing editor of “BioData Mining,” Boland on July 1 began serving as deputy editor.
Boland holds a Master of Arts, Master of Philosophy and PhD in biomedical informatics from Columbia University. Her undergraduate degree is in bioinformatics (with history and computer science minors) from Saint Vincent College.
She is a nationally recognized leader in the field of clinical research informatics, specifically using phenotypes from electronic health records linked to external resources to include information on environmental exposures. Boland extensively researches the role that environmental exposures play in human development and disease.
In April 2026, Boland was presented with the Quentin Schaut Faculty Award, an honor that recognizes the contributions, leadership and achievements of a junior faculty member to the curriculum and life of the College.
Boland’s textbook, “Health Analytics with R: Learning Data Science Using Examples from Healthcare and Direct-to-Consumer Genetics,” published by Springer Nature, is used in over 30 countries and also in several of her courses taught at the College.
She is also the principal investigator on two National Science Foundation grants at Saint Vincent.
