Boland in top 2% of scientists cited globally for medical informatics

by Public Relations | November 04, 2026

LATROBE, PA – Dr. Mary Regina Boland, C’10, an assistant professor of data science at Saint Vincent College, is among the top 2% of scientists cited globally in the medical informatics subfield, according to 2025 data compiled in an analysis from Stanford University researchers.

This annual database was created by Stanford researchers and the open-access publisher Public Library of Science using Scopus, a source-neutral abstract and citation database owned by Elsevier. More than 230,000 scholars across all fields are ranked from a pool of more than 8.8 million active scientists worldwide based on how often their work is cited by other scholars.

For the analysis, there is no application or nominating process. Every researcher with a Scopus author profile is scored automatically on six citation indicators, and those scores decide who is included, according to Top 2% Scientists. This allows for an unbiased assessment of researchers from across the globe. The methodology is comprehensive, and these six citation indicators go beyond mere citation count.

Based on their analysis for the 2025 single-year data, Boland is ranked 438 out of 22,436 in the medical informatics subfield (top 1.95%) under the information and communications technologies main field.

“We are extremely proud of Dr. Mary Regina Boland and the recent recognition of her research contributions,” said Dr. Stephen Jodis, dean of the Herbert W. Boyer School of Natural Sciences, Mathematics and Computing at the College. “Her work involves collaborators from around the world and creates meaningful opportunities for Saint Vincent undergraduates to engage in research involving data science and biomedical discovery. We congratulate her on this achievement and recognition of her work and look forward to the opportunities her future research will bring to our campus community and beyond.”

Boland holds a Master of Arts, Master of Philosophy and PhD in biomedical informatics from Columbia University. Her undergraduate degree is in bioinformatics (with history and computer science minors) from Saint Vincent College.

She teaches informatics in the undergraduate nursing and Direct Entry – Master of Science in Nursing programs in addition to data science at the undergraduate level. Boland also instructs a health analytics course for health science majors that leverages her biomedical informatics expertise and her textbook, “Health Analytics with R: Learning Data Science Using Examples from Healthcare and Direct-to-Consumer Genetics,” published in January 2025 by Springer Nature.

Earlier this year, Boland was honored by Springer Nature with two Editor of Distinction awards for her work as managing editor of “BioData Mining,” a peer-reviewed open-access scientific journal. Following a term as the journal’s managing editor, Boland on July 1 began serving as deputy editor.

In April 2026, Boland was presented with the Quentin Schaut Faculty Award, an honor that recognizes the contributions, leadership and achievements of a junior faculty member to the curriculum and life of the College. She is also the principal investigator on two National Science Foundation grants at Saint Vincent.
