Academic Support

Opportunity SVC/Act 101/Student Support Services (SSS-TRIO)

All students are assigned faculty advisors based on their majors, and students who are undeclared are assigned faculty advisors who are designated to assist students in their major selections. Students should communicate with their faculty advisors regularly for registration and academic planning.

In addition to the faculty advisors, students may also work with academic advisors from the Opportunity Office for additional support. The office provides academic support through academic advisors who assist students with developing their time management and study skills, and these advisors also help students identify the many additional resources that are available at the college.

The office provides the following services:

  • Identifies strategies to help students overcome academic challenges
  • Evaluates study skills and develops plans for improvement
  • Monitors student progress to ensure students are on track for their majors
  • Helps develop time management skills
  • Assesses note- and test-taking strategies and offers suggestions
  • Recommends tutors from our list of department-endorsed tutors
  • Monitors academic progress by responding to academic alerts, faculty feedback, and midterm grades
  • Assists in major selection
  • Provides support and encouragement
  • Offers a study skills course, Principles of Academic Success, worth 1 credit
  • Partners with faculty to address problem areas
  • Helps students comply with satisfactory academic standards to maintain financial aid

Please contact the Coordinator of Academic Accommodations, Nicole Kerr, by email at nicole.kerr@stvincent.edu.

Saint Vincent College values diversity and equity, and it is committed to providing a learning environment that is accessible to all students. The college follows the standards and guidelines set forth in the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973.

Students may initiate the process at any time during the year; however, they are encouraged to contact the Director of Academic Accommodations as early as possible to begin the process. First-year students are especially encouraged to contact the office soon after committing to enroll at the college. In order to be eligible for academic accommodations, students are required to submit the following documentation, completed by a licensed professional, to the Director of Academic Accommodations:

    • diagnosis of a specific disability (learning, medical, psychiatric),
    • explanation of evaluations used and test results;
    • limitations in an educational setting;
    • explanation of recommended accommodations.

Accommodations are determined on an individual basis and through an interactive process. In accordance with a student’s documentation, reasonable accommodations may include:

    • Distraction-limited test environment
    • Extended test time
    • Reader for exams
    • Computer exam format
    • Permission to electronically record lectures
    • Note-takers
    • Alternate format for written material

Reasonable academic accommodations do not alter essential elements of courses, programs or activities. They are modifications which allow otherwise qualified individuals to have an equal opportunity in the classroom.

    Office of Vocational Rehabilitation (OVR)
The Office of Vocational Rehabilitation of the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry can provide funding for learning disability testing, tuition, adaptive equipment and other services. If you are a Pennsylvania resident, please call 1-800-762-4223 for more information and a referral to a local OVR counselor.

For more information, please contact the Assistant Vice President for Student Success and Formation, Dr. Dana Winters, by email at dana.winters@stvincent.edu.

  • Tutoring

    Tutors

Tutors are available to assist students in all departments. The individual academic departments identify strong students in their majors and these students hold hours throughout the semester to provide students with additional support.

Some departments have tutors available at regular hours and locations. Other departments have tutors who can be contacted to make appointments. This information is published in the Tutorial Bulletin each semester, and it can be accessed on the MySV portal or through faculty advisors.

    Collaborative Learning Programs (CLPs)

Certain foundational courses in the Boyer School of Natural Sciences, Mathematics and Computing have weekly hour-long sessions to supplement the courses. These sessions are led by upperclassmen who have tutoring experience and who have successfully completed the courses previously. These CLPs provide additional review and clarification for students taking the courses.

  • Office of the Registrar

The Registrar's Office is responsible for maintaining all academic records of undergraduate, graduate and seminary students. Our goal is to provide quality service to students, alumni, faculty, administrative departments and visitors.
