Class of 1968: 50th Reunion Legacy Project
Saint Vincent College Class of 1968
By Jack Wilson, C'68
Members of the Saint Vincent College Class of 1968 came together in the fall of 1964 to begin what would be a journey of education, friendships and bonds to a Benedictine community--and to one another--displaying a combined spirit that many have described as being truly one of a kind. In fact, the strong bonds were cemented by a group pride that was once described by a classmate as a “pride bordering on arrogance.”
The bigger the challenge, the greater the commitment to work together for the class of 1968--no task seemed to be too great. The largest college concert--Ray Charles, the highest number of attendees at class reunions, the highest number of donors per graduating class, the first class-sponsored scholarship to assist future students. And, most recently, the Class of 1968’s commitment to a 50th Reunion Legacy Project of $200,000, which was initiated to give back to our alma mater.
50th Reunion Legacy Project
Class of 1968 Father Ronald Gorka Scholarship
Father Ronald Gorka was our Academic Dean. He assisted many in the Class of 1968 as they began their rise to the next level of their educational, professional and occupational journeys. He often wrote recommendation letters that always stressed that a student’s value goes beyond the textbook. And regarding our class and aiding others, he stated that we all help one another when we can. Fr. Gorka passed away following our 25threunion, and members of the class came together to sponsor a class scholarship in his name. The scholarship was designed to reward a student’s outstanding personal character and service to others as observed by college faculty, staff and administrators. The class felt that building a major scholarship independently was yet another challenge, but the response was, again, rapid and strong. The endowment was increased during this Capstone Legacy Project. As of this writing, the scholarship endowment is more than half a million dollars, and distribution of financial support to students is beyond $250,000 dollars. The scholarship is now being managed by its previous recipients.
St. Benedict Fountain and Statue
The concept of a St. Benedict Fountain was proposed, and our class gifted the base of the fountain to the College. Inscribed on the base is the phrase, “Prefer nothing to the love of Christ.” The base holds a statue of a youthful St. Benedict holding a copy of “The Rule of St. Benedict,” which is a book of precepts, written by St. Benedict, for Benedictine monks living communally under the authority of an abbot. The book is also a very beloved among the Saint Vincent Community and is required reading for all new students entering the College.
Melvin Platz Contemplative Garden
The quiet space in Melvin Platz is the final piece of our Legacy Project. The aim of creating this space was to bring about a contemplative space in center campus for those seeking an area for quiet reflection. It is also intended to honor all those considered members of the Saint Vincent College Class of 1968.
