Understanding Your Financial Aid Package

Financial Aid Checklist Items

The checklist will alert you to the status of your financial aid pacakage. Other items on your checklist may need to be completed before financial aid can be evaluated or before your bill is ready for review. These may include:

  • Direct Loan Master Promissory Note completion
  • Entrance Counseling completion
  • Documents needed based on your FAFSA results
  • Housing or meal plan selection

Financial Aid Packages

Your financial aid package may include a combination of institutional grants and scholarships, federal aid, and state aid. Financial aid awards are typically based on full-time enrollment. If you enroll in fewer than 12 credits, your financial aid may be reduced or adjusted accordingly.

Where to Find Your Aid Information

There are two sections in your checklist that display your financial aid offer:

  • Financial Aid Award Package
  • Financial Aid Offer Letter

These sections should match in content, with one exception: Work Study may appear differently between the two.

Understanding Work Study

The Work Study amount listed is not included in your total awarded financial aid.

  • It represents the maximum amount you could potentially earn through a work-study job.
  • These earnings are paid as you work and may be used toward your student expenses, but they are not guaranteed funds.

If you notice any awards listed in your offer letter that do not appear in your award package (other than Work Study), please contact the Financial Aid Office for assistance.

Pennsylvania State Grant (PHEAA)

If you are eligible for a Pennsylvania State Grant, it may appear in your financial aid package as an estimate. However, this award is not finalized until you complete all requirements through PHEAA (Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency).

  • PHEAA will contact you directly via email if additional information or action is needed.
  • Be sure to check your email regularly and complete any requested steps promptly to ensure your grant is processed and awarded.

Loan Disbursement

Federal Student Loans

For new borrowers, federal loan funds will not appear on your billing statement until you have completed both of the following requirements:

  • Master Promissory Note (MPN)
  • Entrance Counseling

Additionally:

  • Loan origination fees are deducted by the federal government and may not be reflected on your billing statement.

Verification Requirement (Federal Aid)

Federal Title IV aid—including loans and grants—will not appear on your billing statement if you have been selected for verification and have not yet completed the process.

  • If selected, you will be notified by the Financial Aid Office and through your student portal.
  • Verification may require you to:
    • Complete additional forms
    • Submit supporting documentation

Your aid will not be applied until all verification requirements have been completed.

Additional Loan Types

If you have applied for and been approved for additional loans, please note the following:

Parent Plus Loans

  • These funds will not appear on your billing statement until the Master Promissory Note (MPN) has been completed.
  • Origination fees may not be reflected on your statement.

Private Student Loans

  • These loans will not appear on your billing statement until your lender has submitted all required loan documentation to the school.
  • Processing times may vary depending on the lender.

Outside Scholarships

Outside scholarships are applied to the student account once the Business Office (Student Accounts) receives the check. These scholarships will not be included as pending financial aid.
