Saint Vincent College to host eclipse viewing event April 8

by Public Relations | April 04, 2024

LATROBE, PA — The Saint Vincent College Physics Department will host a viewing event for the “Great North American Eclipse” on April 8 at the Sis and Herman Dupré Science Pavilion on campus.

The event will run from 2 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. The eclipse maximum—when the moon will cover 96 percent of the sun as viewed from campus—will occur at 3:18 p.m. The viewing event is appropriate for all ages and is free and open to the public. Reservations are not required.

Other than during the very brief total eclipse phase, when the moon completely blocks the sun, it is not safe to look directly at the sun without specialized protection. Members of the Physics Department will assist sky-gazers with telescopes fitted with solar filters and projectors to safely view the eclipse. Free protective glasses will be distributed while supplies last.

Live coverage of the eclipse from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration also will be shown during the event at the Dupré Pavilion.
