Roam the Neighborhood: Latrobe and Beyond

Welcome to our neighborhood!

We are the birthplace of football and the banana split, the home of Arnold Palmer, the legacy of Mister Rogers, and the training ground for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Just 60 miles east of Pittsburgh and less than 30 miles from the Laurel Highland Mountains, Latrobe offers the perfect blend of natural and urban attractions.

Latrobe: Small Town Charm

Latrobe has been recognized as one of HGTV’s Most Charming Small Towns in America and Smithsonian Magazine’s 20 Best Small Towns to Visit. A hidden gem in rural Pennsylvania, Latrobe features a charming downtown filled with coffee shops, parks, bike trails, and breweries. Nearby towns like Ligonier and Greensburg add to the appeal with antique shops, trendy restaurants, entertainment venues, farmers markets, and more. Just a short drive from campus, students can explore all three towns and discover their favorite local spots.

During freshmen orientation, our students get to know the downtown area when they participate in a service project to help our neighborhood businesses and parks.

Laurel Highlands: Mountain Escape

The Laurel Highlands which spans 3,000 square miles across three counties, offers outdoor recreation, historical attractions, and lots of unique shopping and restaurants. Whether you’re a science major with an eye toward environmental policy or research, a history buff who loves exploring museums and landmarks, or simply someone who looks outside for adventure and fun, the Laurel Highlands distinct natural character offers an environment of discovery.

Our students can enjoy weekend mountain adventures like skiing, hiking, and exploring, thanks to frequent trips organized by our active Outdoors Club.

Pittsburgh: City Adventure

Located just 60 miles west of Saint Vincent, Pittsburgh, PA, which was recently featured on Lonely Planet’s 2025 Global Best in Travel, is a perfect weekend getaway for students. Whether exploring the Andy Warhol Museum, attending concerts at Heinz Hall, or riding the Incline for breathtaking views of the city, students will find no shortage of activities.

SVC’s Activities Programming Board regularly organizes trips to Pirates games at PNC Park and Broadway shows at the Benedum. The city's dynamic industry also provides students with valuable internship opportunities at places like The Children’s Institute of Pittsburgh, BNY Melon, Carnegie University Research, and the Pittsburgh Penguins.
